Ferrymead Heritage Park 2018
ferrymead.org.nz
Ferrymead owes its importance in history to the hills dividing Christchurch from the port of Lyttelton. Pioneers transported their goods over the steep Bridle Path from Lyttelton to Heathcote, where punts were used to cross the river into early Christchurch. Later traffic came by sea up the estuary. In 1863, the first railway in New Zealand was opened, running from Ferrymead into central Christchurch. This railway line was the inspiration for Ferrymead Heritage Park and the restored railway line follows part of the route today.
Ferrymead Park features an early 1900s (Edwardian) township and the park has a variety of restored cottages plus a school house, church and businesses which reflect the period and allow visitors to experience life for the early residents of Christchurch including the smell of a coal range and the sounds of a tram rattling past the door.
There are a large array of heritage exhibitions and displays that are open for viewing, particularly on Sundays. These displays are owned and operated by individual societies and manned by their volunteers. They have restored and displayed their collections for you to enjoy and these include tractors, fire engines, aeroplanes, trams, trains, cars, printing, post and telegraph, model railway, photography and much much more. If you are interested in a particular society's display, please contact the society in advance of your visit, to ensure that volunteers will be on site.
Trams run on weekends and throughout the School Holidays.
Tram rides are not included in the admission price but can still be purchased at a small fee.
Steam trains run on the second Sunday of the month and you can enjoy unlimited rides along the route as part of your entry fee.

Ferrymead Ganz Mavag EMU - Clearance Test Run (HD)
On Saturday 17th December 2016, another event was recorded in the history books for the Canterbury Railway Society at Ferrymead, Christchurch. The recently donated Ganz Mavag EMU EM 1373/ET 3373 was taken out along the railway to the Ferrymead station for the first time to allow clearance checks to take place between the unit and the edge of the station platform. The same process was done at the Moorhouse station platform, the unit cleared with enough space through both platforms. The unit was towed behind Bagnall Tr 156 as it is not quite ready for operation as of yet, however it was still an interesting sight to witness the first ever Ganz Mavag unit to run not only on the Ferrymead Railway, but the first one to ever run on private heritage metals in New Zealand. The Ganz Mavag EMU's were built in 1982 by Ganz Mavag, Hungary and operated the Wellington city commuter trains until early 2016 when a new batch of Matangi EMU's built in Korea entered service in New Zealand's capital city. Apologies for any bad wind noise throughout the video as the day brought strong breezes around Ferrymead but this didn't stop us recording this moment, enjoy!
