Manakara to Fianarantsoa Train Journey, Madagascar, Africa
On vacation in madagascar I took the train between Manakara and Fianarantsoa. In this video you can see the beautiful scenery and the local people. There were only 9 tourists on the train. I ride in the Firstclass, goodwagon, locomotive, on front of the locomotive and on the flatbed.
The train needed 13 hours for the 163km track. The track is very old and not straight. The locomotive is an Alsthom AD16B with a 1600hp V16 diesel engine.
Everything is worn out and this is the last locomotive on that track and they started with 6 of them. The train is very essential for the area to get the goods to the market. There are not much decent roads in the area. So the train is a lifeline.

MADAGASCAR Trains, People and Jungles... Fianarantsoa - Manakara Railway Line
Raw footage. Following the Tropic of Capricorn through the jungles of Madagascar you are watching one of the World's Great Train Journeys. This metric railway line - 1000mm gauge - was built by the French colonial administration between 1926 and 1936 to open up the east coast and facilitate the export of agricultural products from this fertile region. The tracks were imported from Germany, the carriages from Switzerland. The French used rails and ties taken from Germany as World War I reparations to build the line. Many parts of the railway still have the date of manufacturing on them dating back to 1893.
This video raw footage compilation covers the first 9 hours daylight trip (of total 16 hrs that day) i.e. from the train departure at 08 am to 17 pm arrival time in a remote village.
One could argue that taking 12 to 24 hours to cover the 163km between Madagascar’s highlands and its Indian Ocean coast is a rather slow and inefficient way to travel. It is, but that's the point. Travelling on the Fianarantsoa-Côte Est (FCE) railway, the world's third steepest railway incline, isn’t really about getting from A to B – It’s about The Journey!!!...
The train travels between the towns of Fianarantsoa in the highlands (elevation 1100m) and Manakara on the coast. The gradient of the line partly explains its slow going – the constant breakdowns and heavy cargo are the real issue. The train crosses areas not accessible by road, so it is a lifeline for local communities who use it to trade and travel. It is this amazing spectacle – the road-less landscapes and the loading/unloading theatrics at every station, 18 in total – that make the journey so special.
This kind of slow and unpredictable travel isn’t for everyone. It’s either your idea of an authentic experience, or your worst nightmare in your carefully planned two-week holiday.

Conçu à l'époque coloniale, le train qui traverse
une partie de l'île, reste une aubaine pour la survie locale. A 20 km/h, sa vitesse de croisière laisse le temps de déguster les plats proposés dans les petites gares par les petits vendeurs et apprécier les panoramas luxuriants.
L'histoire de cette ligne ferroviaire hors du commun tient de l'épopée. Imaginée par la puissance coloniale française au début du XX^e siècle, elle visait à désenclaver l'est de Madagascar, afin de favoriser l'exportation des produits agri¬coles malgaches vers l'Europe via la capitale Antananarivo et le principal port de l'île, Tamatave, plus au nord. Ses travaux commencèrent en 1926 en utilisant des rails fabriqués en 1896 --certains sont encore en service-- et saisis à l'Allemagne en 1918. Malgré d'énormes difficultés liées au terrible relief de montagnes russes sur les deux tiers du parcours et aux immenses forêts luxuriantes, ils avancèrent vite. Dix ans furent nécessaire et , le 1er avril 1936, la voie, débutée au niveau de la mer, arrive à son terminus, 163,4 kilomètres plus loin et 1200 mètres d'altitude plus haut à Fianarantsoa
L es Malgaches ont ironiquement rebaptisé ce train TGV pour «train à grande vibration» la locomotive diesel rouge est sortie des usines d'Alstom à la fin des années 1970 achetée d'occasion. Un wagon première classe surtout fréquentée par les touristes, les vahazas , «les Blancs», un peu à l'écart, tandis que les locaux s'entassent dans les deux wagons de seconde classe. Le convoi comprend une voiture de marchandises, qui se remplit parfois au-delà du raisonnable de chargements de bananes, de café ou de litchis en fonction des récoltes et des saisons.

Rejoindre Manakara, sur la côte de l'océan indien, depuis Fianarantsoa en train, est une expérience unique. La vieille locomotive peine à tirer les wagons chargés de voyageurs et de marchandises. Chaque arrêt dans les gares de villages reculés est une attraction pour les habitants et une occasion supplémentaire de se distraire pour les passagers. Les paysages traversés sont magnifiques. Pas le temps de s'ennuyer...

Synopsis
La « Fianarantsoa Côte Est », c’est 163 kms de voie ferrée reliant Fianarantsoa, capitale des Betsileo à Manakara ville côtière de Madagascar. Jalonnée de 67 ponts et 48 tunnels, la FCE est l’un des chemins de fer les plus raides du monde et traverse l’un des plus beaux paysages de Madagascar.
Cinq fois par semaine, le petit train entame à 7h du matin sa descente des hauts plateaux jusqu’à la mer. La vitesse de croisière oscille entre 20 et 35 km/h. Le voyage dure normalement 12h mais souvent beaucoup plus. On ne peut jamais savoir…
