What to do in Puerto Jimenez, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
Puerto Jimenez, a small town located on Osa Peninsula, in the South Pacific tip of Costa Rica, serves as the main gateway to Corcovado National Park, the primary attraction of the region. While most people visit Osa Peninsula for the sole purpose of trekking in Corcovado, the town itself and the area surrounding it offers much more to those willing to hang around for a few extra days.
In this Episode, we share the highlights of our stay in Puerto Jimenez, including an amazing kayaking adventure on Golfo Dulce with Aventura Tropicales, a night tour with Ficus Tours and some awesome drone footage of the secluded Playa Platanares.

Saving a Parrot from Caracaras on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica
On the drive to Corcovado National Park our guide from Ficus Tours, Jenkins, pointed out an adult and adolescent Caracara (a type of falcon) perched on a roadside fence. As we slowly drove past I snapped photos, all the while hearing a loud cawing sound that didn’t appear to be coming from either of the birds on the fence. That’s when I noticed a rustling in the grass at the bottom of the fence and saw a second adult Caracara looming with lethal intent over a grounded parrot.
To our great relief, Jenkins said we should intervene since this was a highly unusual situation, and not a very ‘natural’ one since it was taking place at the edge of a farm field rather than the nature preserve.
The Caracaras flew away as we approached. Jenkins managed to coax the parrot onto a stick and transfer it to safe perch across the road in a tree on the edge of a dense forest filled with the calls of other parrots.

Top 3 Reasons to Visit the Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica is the main tourist destination on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. And one of the top things to do in Puerto Viejo is to visit the Jaguar Rescue Center. Even though you will probably encounter a lot of Costa Rican wildlife while visiting the Talamanca region of Limón, the Jaguar Rescue Center is the best place to see sloths, monkeys, and other animals of Costa Rica that have been rescued and cared back to health. You will also learn a lot about these animals and how to help protect them. A great thing to do during your family vacation in Puerto Viejo.

What is the Jaguar Rescue Center?
The Jaguar Rescue Center is a temporary or permanent home for ill, injured and orphaned animals. With a focus on birds, reptiles, amphibians and small primates, the JRC provides veterinary services, round-the-clock care and comfort to animals that would otherwise be unable to survive in the rainforest or the sea of the Caribbean.
Why Jaguar?
The Jaguar is the most hunted endangered animal in the Americas. It’s a symbol of nature that suffers from a great threat of extinction.
In 2007 a baby jaguar was given to Encar and Sandro. Her mother had been murdered because local farmers suspected she had killed two goats. The baby jaguar was dehydrated and very sick. Encar and Sandro did everything they could to save it but in the end, the endangered baby jaguar died. Encar and Sandro decided to name their animal rescue center in honor of her and the Jaguar Rescue Center was born.
The jaguar represents the spirit of the king of the jungle and her memory lives on in each animal they save. The spirit of that original baby jaguar lives on in every animal we rescue and our mission of Help Us Help Them continues in her honor.
The primary goal of the JRC is to rehabilitate animals and reintroduce them back into their native habitats. Monkeys, birds, sloths, snakes and more are brought to the JRC, and treated by professional veterinarians, caregivers and a hard-working team of staff and volunteers. Food is lovingly prepared, medication is administered, and all animals get personal contact with their caregivers. When they are healed and healthy, most animals are reintroduced to their native habitats to live out their lives in the land that is their home.
For some of the friends brought to the JRC, reintroduction isn’t possible due to the nature of their illness or injuries, and these animals find a permanent, loving home at the JRC, cared for by a team of staff and volunteers, living in habitats that mimic their lives outside the JRC.
In addition to the animal-care services, the JRC provides educational services to the residents and visitors of Costa Rica, as well as internship and research opportunities for biologists, veterinarians, and researchers from around the world.

The Sacred Plants in the Americas conference was held on February 23, 24, and 25, 2018 in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico. The conference had the purpose of building a bridge between indigenous and traditional psychoactive practices, psychedelic science, and drug policy through multidisciplinary and intercultural dialogue. In a context in which drug policy reforms are temporary, we consider it relevant to build spaces for discussion about psychoactive species and their growing multiplicity of uses. Moreover, it also sought to give voice to the indigenous people, who have been knowledgeable about psychoactive plants since ancient times, and they will be providing lectures at the conference.
