Karohano (2008) by Jeannette Ginslov (Higher Res)
Karohano, meaning pieces in Sesotho, was originally a live dance collaboration with three male dancers from Madagascar and South Africa. It became a dance video by fusing hand held video techniques and special effects to capture an urban dance energy that depicts aspects of African male identity, political satire and ironic gestures.
Karohano was first performed as a live dance work by Inzalo Dance & Theatre Company at The Market Lab Johannesburg, 29 July 2007. Director, Jeannette Ginslov, approached the dance company wanting to create a dance video. The video was then shot in August 2007, on location in Newtown Johannesburg, South Africa and edited December 2007 -- January 2008. The stage work most recently won the 7th Choreographic Encounters, 2008 Dance Africa Dance competition in Tunis.

CoNCrEte (2009)
CoNCrEte (2009) Directed by Jeannette Ginslov
Submitted for Masters Final Presentation for MSc Media Arts & Imaging - Screendance
Media Arts & Imaging Dept, DJCAD, Dundee University, Dundee, Scotland
MSc Degree Show 04 - 19 September 2009. Ginslov received an A1 distinction for the work.
CoNCrEte reveals our ever-changing lived experience and responses to the environment, relationships and events that result in a display of emotions and affordances.
CoNCrEte amplifies the emotional and kinaesthetic using a mixture of hand held Sony handycam rehearsal footage as well as footage with Sony HD Z7 camera. It blends close-ups creating de-familiarization, with wide shots framing the body against a concrete location, uses post modern dance choreographic strategies with authentic emotional expression in an attempt to create haptic and affective imagery. Repetition in the edit considers vertical montage as means of drawing upon the viewer's empathetic responses.
The values behind Concrete Art also influenced the form and content of CoNCrEte. Similarly, Concrete Art uses structure, kinetics, the real, the visible and tangible. It renounces representation and metaphor, is a result of intuition, liberates pictorial expression from expressive tendencies and makes the abstract visible. CoNCrEte reveals real concrete emotions.
