VIEQUES PUERTO RICO - TOUR and VLOG
Vamos a hacerlo en una playa en Puerto Rico! In this vlog, we are in search of Puerto Rico's best beaches, which brings us to Vieques. Vieques is a laidback Caribbean island off Puerto Rico's eastern coast. We take a ferry from the mainland to get there.
Vieques is known for Red Beach, a clear turquoise water beach, perfect for swimming. It's also renowned for the Bioluminescent Bay, where you can watch the ocean glow at night. It also offers secluded beaches with white sands and pristine water, wild roaming horses, and countryside.

THE GLOWING BIO BAY IN VIEQUES PUERTO RICO
Mosquito Bay or Bio Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico is an amazing place. It is the brightest glowing bioluminescent bay in the world. I jumped on a few kayak tours during the night of a new moon and saw this incredible light show.
Honestly, it was more amazing that I imagined. I had read a review or two, but wasn't sure if it was worth the trip to the island. It was. The bay is extremely bright, and until now, it was very hard to capture on camera. I recently picked up a Sony a7s which is a beast in low light, and was impressed with that it could capture. This has rarely ever been caught on Camera.
The government is doing a good job at keeping this place pristine. In some areas of the world you can jump in, splash around, use gasoline engines, and generally just destroy the ecosystem these little guys live in. Here in Vieques, Puerto Rico, you are not allowed to swim, or use gasoline. Nearby light pollution has to be kept to a minimum, and there give Bio Bay some days off now and again to recover. This is probably why it remains the brightest in the world. High Five for sustainable eco tourism. I wish everywhere was this forward thinking.
This was one of my best travel experiences. Like I said, it's worth the trip!

Vieques Bio Bay Tour
Mosquito Bay in Vieques went dark last year for the first time, but has since recovered and is now brighter than it has ever been. This bioilluminescent bay is AMAZING. The water was very warm and I totally wanted to dive right in to swim with the glowing dinoflagellates, but swimming in the bay is no longer permitted due to last year's outage. Regardless, it's so worth it! You much experience it for yourself!

Puerto Rico Trip Report 7 Days - Old San Juan, Vieques, El Yunque Rain Forest
Our Trip to Puerto Rico was nothing but fun, relaxing and enchanting. Here's what we did during the trip.
Day 1 - Arrive in San Juan and Stay
Day 2 - Drive to Cieba and Fligh to Vieques. Bio Bay Tour. Stay.
Day 3 - Private Snorkeling Trip and Flight back to Cieba. Stay at Rain Forest Home.
Day 4 - El Yunque National Forest
Day 5 - Relaxing day at the Beach
Day 6 - Old San Juan
Day 7 - Flight back home.
Suggestions:
If we were to do this trup again, I recommend spending 2 nights in Vieques Island. One day was too short for this beautiful island.
Old San Juan - We spent about 7 hours. They have a free hop-on ride that gives around the old city. You could ride on that to save time. Parking is underground (kind of hidden near the first El Morro.
We drove in the old city and it was super fun. If you have more time, you can walk on the cobble streets.
Vieques Puerto Rico - Pepe the Dog Drive-By on the Way to Los Cocos
On the Island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, this is a sight of charm, humor and everyday life. Little Pepe is a fun little dog who plays this little game every time cars drive by his house. My guess is that his bark and growl sounds worse than his bite! This was on the way from downtown Isabella II to Los Cocos guesthouse.

Mosquito Pier- Vieques, Puerto Rico
The last day on our summer 2018 trip to Vieques. We went to Mosquito Pier. Great snorkeling- would probably be great diving too. Saw cuddlefish, turtle, starfish, etc. There were some baitfish out further that were attracting birds and probably predatory fish as well, but we didn't see them under the water. There are no bathrooms and it's about a mile out on the pier, so plan accordingly.
This was the clearest water we found on our trip to Vieques, but at other times of the year other places may clear up.
Why is the Navy exploding bombs in Puerto Rico? | AJ+
Vieques, Puerto Rico: The island that was used by the U.S. Navy as a training ground for war for 60 years. Today, half of Vieques is a toxic Superfund site because the Navy is still cleaning up their leftover bombs – by literally exploding them. Locals say toxins from the munitions are making them sick. And yet, that's not stopping wealthy Americans from the U.S. mainland from buying their second homes in Vieques. AJ+'s Dena Takruri visits Vieques to explore these issues.
