A Perfect Sail to San Juan, Puerto Rico - Ep. 56 RAN Sailing
Let's be friends on Facebook!
We set sail north west towards Puerto Rico and the capital San Juan. But before doing that we had time for another visit at the beautiful Flamenco beach in Culebra. The sail to San Juan was perfect despite the calm morning and we loved to sail along the skyline. In San Juan we rented a car to go around town and do some errands and from what we've seen so far we like this city A LOT!
We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

Puerto Rico EcoQuest Excursion Cave Rapel and Zip Line
While on a cruise in 2013, my friend and I did an excursion in San Juan. This was the best excursion we have been on. Ever. Our travel to Puerto Rico the day before was troublesome because of icy runways. We had difficulty figuring out how to do the excursion and get to our ship to begin our trip. We were wishing we didn't sign up for the EcoQuest Tour. Boy, were we wrong! I had to bring my carry on suitcase and leave it in the tour office, but that was fine. This was the first time I used my helmet cam and didn't realize it was at a high angle for the last part of the trip. I apologize for that. But you still can experience what we did through this video. Enjoy!

Walking tour of Old San Juan Puerto Rico at night
Puerto Rico officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean.
In 1917, the U.S. granted citizenship to Puerto Ricans. In 1948, Puerto Ricans were given the right to elect their own governor. As of 2014, Puerto Rico remains a U.S. territory, although a 2012 referendum showed a majority (54% of the electorate) in favor of a change in status, with full statehood the preferred option.

BIG Tarpon on the fly, Puerto Rico
Today, a BIG Tarpon almost spooled my 300yrd backing!!
It must have taken at least 180yrds off. Everything was working fine, until a passing ferry broke my line after 40+ minutes of fight....:(
Pitty....Great day, regardless, and the poon should be OK since it broke off short, at leader level and it was a small hook :)

What to expect on a Southern Caribbean Cruise
If you like to research everything ahead of time like I do then hopefully you will find this information useful. This cruise was mid April on the Carnival Valor sailing from the port of San Juan Puerto Rico to St. Thomas, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, and St. Kitts
Puerto Rico - We arrive d a day early and spent the time touring Old San Juan and the big fort. We stayed at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino using some rewards points I had. Very nice place, conveniently located so we could walk to several restaurants as well as a Wallgreens. I speak Spanish but most everywhere you go you can speak English as it seems most people in Puerto Rico are bi-lingual.
St. Thomas - We rented a car from Budget (about $75 including gas spent) which has a place right on the pier in Havensight. We drove to Coki Point Beach (cab is about $12 pp each way) and there is a scuba shop right on the beach and some excellent shore diving. We brought our own gear so just rented tanks for $10 I think. The shop was very helpful giving us some tips on where to explore on our own. It was the best shore dive I have done. The non diver's loved the perfect tropical beach. Tons of fish in the water everywhere and some fun snorkeling right next to shore. The drive was fairly easy but print a map before you go because my phone GPS did not work there. Driving on the left side was easy.
Barbados - We booked a scuba dive directly with West Side Scuba westsidescuba.com and they picked us up at the cruise terminal and dropped us off after. Great operation, excellent staff and amazing diving! We dove the Stavronikita (big ship in the video) and some other reef which was really cool. Highly recommend diving with WSS! The non divers walked from the cruise port to Carslisle Bay and paid $5 per person to hang out where they did with the big floating tube and pair diving and you can see it is a perfect beach.
St. Lucia - This is where we did the zipline. We booked this through Carnival and glad we are because the severe rainstorm washed out the road and delayed our return trip by 2 hours. The place we did it was rainforestadventure.com and it was a highlight of the trip. Doing it the rain actually made it funner than it would have been. Our entire group agreed. Those who did not hipline but did the tram thing said is was miserable and cold in the rain. So do the zipline if you go.
St. Kitts - We booked our scuba excursion directly with and I highly recommend them. They picked us up at the cruise terminal and dropped us off. They are close by the cruise port and had a fantastic operation. We dove some really cool wrecks. The non divers took a tour bus they found right at the cruise terminal that took them on a driving tour and to some scenic and historical sights. They said it was fun but it rained that day so they didn;t get to enjoy it as much as they might have.
St. Maarten - We booked a scuba excursion through Carnival and it got cancelled due to weather concerns. Turns out the weather was just fine so we were a bit bummed. We thought about trying to find a local place but our stop here was shorter than others so we decided not to chance missing the ship departure time. So we walked over the smaller pier and took a water taxi over to the main beach and spent the day in the sun and checking out the shops. You can walk to the beach area but it's pretty far so the water taxi is worth it.
