Old Air Force Base Has Gone Wild - Fingal Wildlife Management Area - Day Trips Into Nature Series

On an overcast, but fairly warm spring day we took a drive southwest of home to explore an old air force base that we had never heard of. Prior to arriving, we thought we were going to find some trails through wildlife habitat.

At first, we weren't sure which location was the main entrance so we drove around a large country concession and found several access points until we finally got to the main one on Fingal Drive. The main access had a decent sized parking lot which was almost full with other dog owners. Most of the people seemed to have two dogs and rubber boots on. Luckily, we didn't meet too many off leash and we stayed on fairly dry trails.

During World War II, this military base was one of many used to train pilots for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and its allies. Visitors can still find the tarmac for the three runways and the large hangers, which have since been dismantled. The site covers 293 hectares and has a total of 27 kilometres of trails! I think we walked over 6 kilometres while we were there. The trails are easy to follow and the terrain is flat but slightly uneven.

If you are looking for a place to walk your dog, hike through a variety of landscapes, learn something new or even to go running or snowshoeing, the Fingal Wildlife Management Area has a lot to offer. There are a few picnic tables and a clean privy at the main entrance.

After our long hike, we drove into Port Stanley and then we made our way home. What a great day! Where have you been lately?

Chloe the Foxhound Runs Through Every Tall Grass At Fingal Wildlife Area Trails

Chloe the Foxhound absolutely loved her 6-kilometre hike through the Fingal Wildlife Management Area near Port Stanley, Ontario. As a hound dog, she loves to sniff new places where wildlife, people and other dogs have been. She also adores running through tall grasses and open areas.

Fingal Wildlife Management Area was a great find for us and for Chloe. It was quite obvious, just from the parking lot, that it was a very popular place for dog walkers. Click on the link in the video to see our other video from Fingal.

Hiking The Spicer Trail At John E Pearce Provincial Park - Day Trips Into Nature Series

Situated near Wallacetown and Port Stanley, Ontario is the John E. Pearce Provincial Park. On a warm, overcast day I made the drive to the park, which lies on the northern edge of Lake Erie, to hike the Spicer Trail.

The small non-operating provincial park was empty of visitors and I enjoyed the sounds of the birds as I made my way around the well-marked trail. Said to be an excellent place for bird watching, there were three different wetlands that had been restored, as well as trails through the old hardwood forest that lies behind the Backus Page House.

The museum at the 1850's Georgian style manor was closed when I was there but I got to wander around the grounds before I left.

Be sure to cross the road and check out the southern part of the park which has some picnic tables, parking and a cliff lookout over Lake Erie.

There is no access to the beach from the park since the cliff is about 30+ metres high and fences have been set up to prevent further erosion.

A highly recommended trail to hike with no entry fees and year-round access. Bring your camera or binoculars to spot a variety of birds, like the Pileated Woodpecker that flew by me as I first arrived.

Nearby outdoor enthusiasts can visit Hawk Cliff during raptor migration, hike Fingal Wildlife Management Area (video coming soon) or check out the harbour and beach at Port Stanley.

Random Vlog #688 - Join us as Brother Craig, my nephew Josh and myself finally embark on our Kettle Creek Canoe Trip, the water was low but out spirits were high.. Great times were had and excellent memories were created!
