The Giants Causeway in County Antrim Northern Ireland. Filmed in 2019 in 4k .
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Giant's Causeway is a magnificent, mysterious geological formation on the North East coast of County Antrim.
The Giant's Causeway is steeped in myths and legend. The setting is a spectacular, dynamic coastal landscape of Atlantic waves, rugged cliffs, fascinating geographical antiquity, secluded bays and magnificent views. It forms a jagged headland of neatly packed columns which point towards Scotland. Visitors can walk along the basalt columns which are at the edge of the sea, just over 1km from the entrance to the site.
They say the Giant's Causeway was the stomping ground of giant Finn McCool, who lived in these parts nearly two thousand years ago. How else can you explain the chimney stacks that mark his house? The organ he built for his musical son Oisín? Or the giant boot he left on the shore?
Discover the story for yourself. Come to the Giant's Causeway Visitor Experience and explore the science, myth and legends that surround the Giant's Causeway.

The Giant's Causeway
Long long ago there lived a giant named Finn McCool. He was the biggest and strongest giant in all of Ireland. He was 54 foot tall and he was said to have the strength of 500 men. His voice could be heard for miles around. He lived happily with his wife Oonagh on the Antrim coast. At the same time there lived a giant name Benandonner on the Scottish coast. Benandonner believed that he was the strongest of all the giants. He constantly taunted and shouted at Finn from across the water. One day Finn became so mad with Benandonner that he picked up a huge lump of earth and throw it at him. The earth miss but it landed in the middle of the Irish sea making the Isle of Man. The hole left by Finn became Lough Neagh.
Tired of all of Benandonner taunting, Finn finally accepted to fight Benandonner to settle who was the strongest giant. Finn started to build a path to Scotland that he called the causeway. With his enormous hands he laid down thousands of rock. When Benandonner heard what Finn was doing he decided to build a path from Scotland to meet up with Finn’s path. The two giants worked vigorously for weeks building their paths.
Finally early one morning Finn’s path met Benandonner. Finn was delighted and was about to run across to find Benandonner when he saw him coming over the hill. Finn was shocked!!! Benandonner was twice his size as he looked twice as strong. Benandonner had not yet seen Finn so Finn ran back to his house. Finn asked Oonagh to help him hide. Oonagh was very clever and she thought of a cunning plan. She disguised Finn as a baby and put him into a huge cradle. Benandonner knocked on the door and Oonagh it. At that moment Finn dressed up as a baby pretended to cry. When Benandonner saw the size of the baby in the cradle he was terrified. If the baby was that big his father must be enormous Benandonner thought!! Benandonner turned as fast as he could and ran, ripping up the causeway behind him so that Finn would not follow.

The Giants causeway
On our visit to Ireland in October 2018 we completed a Road trip from Mayo to Northern Ireland. This video is of the famous World Heritage Listed Site the Giants causeway, which is located in Co. Antrim.
The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills.
It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, and a national nature reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant's Causeway was named as the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places.
Much of the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site is today owned and managed by the National Trust and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland. Access to the Giant’s Causeway is free of charge: it is not necessary to go via the visitors centre, which charges a fee. The remainder of the site is owned by the Crown Estate and a number of private landowners.
According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. The story goes that the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool), from the Fenian Cycle of Gaelic mythology, was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channel so that the two giants could meet. In one version of the story, Fionn defeats Benandonner. In another, Fionn hides from Benandonner when he realises that his foe is much bigger than he is. Fionn's wife, Oonagh, disguises Fionn as a baby and tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the 'baby', he reckons that its father, Fionn, must be a giant among giants. He flees back to Scotland in fright, destroying the causeway behind him so that Fionn would be unable to chase him down Across the sea, there are identical basalt columns (a part of the same ancient lava flow) at Fingal's Cave on the Scottish isle of Staffa, and it is possible that the story was influenced by this.

EXPLORING NORTHERN IRELAND: GAME OF THRONES, GIANT'S CAUSEWAY AND THE TITANIC - IN PARTNERSHIP WITH STENA LINE AND DISCOVER NORTHERN IRELAND
So Stena Line and Discover Northern Ireland invited me to come and check out Belfast and the surrounding area, I've never been there and am excited for the adventure. In the first episode, I took a spa aboard the ferry then arrived in Belfast. Belfast is just a little over 2 hours from Scotland by boat, from Cairnryan directly into the Northern Irish capital. There really was no excuse for never to have gone before. Keep your eye out for this three part series! There are loads of things to see in and close to Belfast City, whether you are a Game of Thrones fan and want to see some of the filming locations, are interested in seeing where the Titanic was built and launched from, or want to see the beautiful coastline around the Giant's Causeway.
I also got to experience the luxury spa aboard the Stena Line ferry. I've never been to a spa before so it was amazing to get a massage and a private room for the two hour sailing.

We took a day trip from Belfast, Northern Ireland in order to see the Dark Hedges, Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge and Giant's Causeway. The tour cost 29 euro. We would recommend renting a car to see the Dark Hedges, if that is your priority. The tour only allowed for 5 minutes at the Dark Hedges.

Giant's Causeway Tour - Part of the Causeway Coast NI ????
The Giants Causeway Northern Ireland is one of the North of Ireland's most interesting tourist attractions. So if you have the chance to tour the location - most definitely do! The Giants Causeway is 3 miles from Bushmills, another famous town in this part of the country. Part of the Causeway Coast Way - it is a National Trust site that is also Northern Ireland's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There are some places in this world which are God's creation, no human being ever interfered in them and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland is one of these different locations and which is now attracting lots of tourists to it who want to explore this place that stands on the list of places to visit in Northern Ireland.
The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns which are the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in county Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland which is about three miles northeast of the town of Bushmills (
In addition to being declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO back in 1986, the Giant's Causeway was also declared a national nature reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. These are enough reasons to bring people to visit this place in Northern Ireland but it is also important to mention that the Giant's Causeway was also named the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom.
These columns that are forming the Giant's Causeway are hexagonal in their shape although some of them are with eight sides, the tallest of them is about 12 meters high and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 meters thick in places.
Six million years ago, Antrim was subject to intense volcanic activity and that was when the Giant's Causeway came to life although now in the 20th century people are not sure whether this was a volcanic effect creation, was man-made or else was related to other ways that had led to its appearance. According to some weather conditions, the top of the lower Basalts formed the Inter Basaltic Bed which is the band of reddish rock that is one of the features related to this area. The same action of this weather created circular formations round a nugget of basalt which are locally known as giants eyes.
The Causeway has many legends and stories to tell - from Finn McCool the Giant and his Giant's Boot to the Wishing Chair. One of these legends say that the Giant's Causeway is the remains of a causeway built by a giant. This legend is all about the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill from the Fenian Cycle of Gaelic mythology who was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. There are two versions for this story, one says that Fionn defeated Benandonner and the other version says that Fionn hid from Benandonner. The rest of the story says that when Benandonner saw the size of the baby of Fionn, he traveled back to Scotland destroying the causeway behind him and this led to the appearance of the Giant's Causeway which we tend to see and visit today (
It is always interesting to hear those legendary stories that are related to the touristic locations that people go to visit in specific countries around the world and this was the one story related to the Giant's Causeway that is located in county Antrim in Northern Ireland. We have been there several times before to explore the place and bring the things it has to offer for the tourists coming to check it all (
There are some touristic attractions that are located close to the Giant's Causeway, so in addition to visiting Bushmills town, one could also visit Ballycastle ( move a little bit to reach the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge ( or get a little bit further to reach Ballintoy Harbour ( keep in mind that some of these locations happen to be the locations where Game of Thrones movie was filmed.
The Giant's Causeway is not just a touristic attraction for the story behind its appearance, but it is also a haven for some sea birds and also the National Trust has made an inventory of rare and interesting plants which have survived the feet of thousands of visitors throughout the years there.
The Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre is open and welcoming tourists and visitors all year long except during Christmas Day and New Years Day, so you could plan a trip anytime during the year while putting in mind these two different days to enjoy the beauty of creation of this old historical place.
If you haven't been to the Giant's Causeway yet then plan your trip now and then share you experience back with us here!
