New Zealand: Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park
Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Māori) is a fjord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination.
Milford Sound is named after Milford Haven in Wales, while the Cleddau River which flows into the sound is also named for its Welsh namesake. The Māori named the sound Piopiotahi after the thrush-like piopio bird, now extinct. Piopiotahi means a single piopio, harking back to the legend of Māui trying to win immortality for mankind - when Maui died in the attempt, a piopio was said to have flown here in mourning.
Milford Sound runs 15 kilometers inland from the Tasman Sea at Dale Point - the mouth of the fiord - and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 meters (3,900 ft) or more on either side. Among the peaks are The Elephant at 1,517 meters (4,977 ft), said to resemble an elephant's head, and The Lion, 1,302 meters (4,272 ft), in the shape of a crouching lion. Lush rain forests cling precariously to these cliffs, while seals, penguins, and dolphins frequent the waters and whales can be seen sometimes.
Milford Sound sports two permanent waterfalls all year round, Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls. After heavy rain however, many hundreds of temporary waterfalls can be seen running down the steep sided rock faces that line the fiord. They are fed by rain water drenched moss and will last a few days at most once the rain stops.
With a mean annual rainfall of 6,813 mm on 182 days a year, a high level even for the West Coast, Milford Sound is known as the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand and one of the wettest in the world. Rainfall can reach 250 mm during a span of 24 hours. The rainfall creates dozens of temporary waterfalls (as well as a number of major, more permanent ones) cascading down the cliff faces, some reaching a thousand meters in length. Smaller falls from such heights may never reach the bottom of the sound, drifting away in the wind.
Accumulated rainwater can at times cause portions of the rain forest to lose their grip on the sheer cliff faces, resulting in tree avalanches into the sound. The regrowth of the rain forest after these avalanches can be seen in several locations along the sound.
The Fiordland NP - Pure New Zealand Nature
The Fiordland of New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places in the World. His scenery, his remote wilderness and nature are the heart of Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area in southwest New Zealand. The extraordinary beauty of the area was recognised by the United Nations in 1986 when it was made a World Heritage Area.
The Fiordland National Park was described as having superlative natural phenomina and outstanding examples of the earths evolutionary history. Southwest New Zealand is one of the great wilderness areas of the Southern Hemisphere. It is an area where snow-capped mountains, glaciers, rocks, rivers, waterfalls, deep lakes, sea, sounds, unbroken woods, moss and tussock grasslands produce a landscape of exceptional natural beauty. The wildlife is stunning. The area is home for Keas, Kiwis, Bellbirds, Takahes, Tuis, Pukekos, Kakapos, Dolphins, Seals, Penguins and other birds and marine mammals: incredible and exciting nature. 100% Pure New Zealand nature experience. A must do for Kiwi travellers and tourists from overseas. The National Park included some of the best known tourist attractions of the South Island and whole New Zealand and is one of the NZ highlights and top destinations for nature lovers in the world. Best known are the Milford Sound and the Doubtful Sound, but there are a lot of beautiful places of the unknown NZ in the area.
A scenic flight is a great adventure in Fiordland. It is so amazing to fly over and within this stunning scenery. Breathtaking views of mountains, glaciers, valleys, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, sounds, woods, beaches, rocky coastline and some locations for filming the Lord of the Rings movie. I can not say whats my favorite location, because there are so much. I did flying with with Milford Helicopters at Milford Sound and Southern Lakes Helicopters in Te Anau. There are also several other companys.
Also a trip and cruise with Real Journeys, Red Boat Cruises, Mitre Peak Cruises, Fiordland Cruises or Fiordland Expeditions on the amazing sounds are a great experience. Even when weather is rainy and foggy is it a unforgettible jouney into a silent fairy tale world of water, mountains, wood, trees, rocks, moss and low-hanging clouds with dophins, penguins and seals in the water. Sometimes the Doubtful Sound is called the Sound of Silence, there is a cloistered serenity within the fiord that contrasts with Milford Sound. The fiord is rich in flora and fauna, New Zealand Fur Seals and Fiordland Crested Penguins can be seen on many of the small islets at the entrance of the fiord. Doubtful is the deepest of the fiords and is long and winding with three distinct arms and several outstanding waterfalls in the area from Deep Cove to the open ocean, a distance of around fourty kilometres. There are many ways to experience Doubtful Sound by kayak or cruise, as a day trip or on an overnight experience.
The Fiordland is also a paradise for Hiking. There are several Great Walks of New Zealand in the area, like the Milford Track, the Routeburn Track, the Keppler Track and the Dusky Track. Discover the unknown New Zealand by Eco-tourism. Experience the stunning and exciting wilderness and nature of Fiordland National Park, paradise and home of endangered wildlife. If you dont want to make it alone do it with companys like Fiordland Nature observations, Fiordland Wilderness Experience or Milford Sea Kayaks. The aerea is also popular for deer hunting, often by chopper. In the last years Fiordland becomes also popular for adrenaline fun sports like base jumping in wingsuit and surfing big waves on previously inaccessible coastlines and mountains.

Milford Sound, New Zealand
Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is a fiord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park, Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) Marine Reserve, and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey (the 2008 Travelers' Choice Destinations Awards by TripAdvisor)[1][2] and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination.[3] Rudyard Kipling had previously called it the eighth Wonder of the World.[4]
Fiordland National Park, New Zealand (HD) | Wonderful photos of Fiordland, New Zealand
Fiordland National Park occupies the southwest corner of the South Island of New Zealand. It is the largest of the 14 national parks in New Zealand, with an area of 12,500 km2, and a major part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. The park is administered by the Department of Conservation.
During the cooler past, glaciers carved many deep fiords, the most famous (and most visited) of which is Milford Sound. Other notable fiords include Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound. From one of the peaks within Fiordland National Park, a view of Mount Aspiring/Tititea to the far north can be observed.[1]
Fiordland's coast is steep and crenellated, with the fiords running from the valleys of the southern ranges of the Southern Alps, such as the Kepler and Murchison Mountains. At the northern end of the park, several peaks rise to over 2,000 metres.
Ice has carved islands from the mainland, leaving two large uninhabited offshore islands, Secretary Island and Resolution Island. Several large lakes lie wholly or partly within the park's boundaries, notably Lake Te Anau, Lake Manapouri, Lake Monowai, Lake Hauroko, and Lake Poteriteri. The Sutherland Falls, to the southwest of Milford Sound on the Milford Track, are among the world's highest waterfalls.

One of the most incredible and frequently overlooked features of Milford Sound is the journey to get there. A range of short walks and photographic opportunities mean that those wishing to truly explore will find no shortage of spectacular stops to choose from. The Milford Road is a stunning alpine drive. Visitors need to allow plenty of time to stop at the numerous viewing points or short walking opportunities en route, just to get out of the car and drink in the spectacular scenery and the sheer scale of the landscape. My personal favorite locations are the Mirror Lakes, Monkey Creek and the Chasm, but there are a lot of other highlights which makes the Milford road to one of the top tourist destinations of the South Island of New Zealand.
The road is fully sealed, but the 240 kilometre return journey between Te Anau to Milford takes a minimum of two hours driving (in each direction) without allowing for stops. Motorists are advised to fill vehicles with petrol in Te Anau, although supplies are available at Gunns Camp in the Hollyford Valley and at Milford Sound. The best is to drive not too much at one day and spend at least two or more nights in Te Anau.

Te Anau Lake Veiw
View from the edge of Lake Te Anau.
Lake Te Anau is in the southwestern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. Its name was originally Te Ana-au, Maori for 'The cave of swirling water'. The lake covers an area of 344 km², making it the second-largest lake by surface area in New Zealand and the largest in the South Island. Lake Te Anau is however the largest lake in Australasia by fresh water volume.
The main body of the lake runs north-south, and is 65 km in length. Three large fiords form arms to the lake on its western flank: North Fiord, Middle Fiord and South Fiord. These are the only inland Fiords that New Zealand has, the other 14 are out on the coast. Several small islands lie in the entrance to Middle Fiord, which forks partway along its length into northwest and southwest arms. The lake lies at an altitude of 210 m, and since its maximum depth is 417 m much of its bed lies below sea level.
Several rivers feed the lake, of which the most important is the Eglinton River, which joins the lake from the east, opposite the entrance to North Fiord. The outflow is the Waiau River, which flows south for several kilometres into Lake Manapouri. The town of Te Anau lies at the south-eastern corner of the lake, close to the outflow.
Most of the lake is within Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. The Kepler and Murchison Mountains rise 1,400 m above the surface of the lake.
