QL visits the Doha Fire Station for QIAF2018
The QL team dropped by Qatar International Art Festival 2018, organized by MAPS International WLL and headed by Ms Rashmi Agarwal. Qatar Museum- Doha Fire station was the Venue Partner.
Qatar has always been known as a country that promotes and encourages the pursuit of artistic excellence.
The existence of several international art galleries, including those at the Katara Cultural Village and the Doha Fire Station, underlines this fact quite nicely.
The Doha Fire Station, which is one of the most recognisable art landmarks in Qatar, recently turned into a beehive of creative activity as 147 artists, from as many as 58 nations, descended upon it for the Qatar International Art Festival (QIAF) 2018.
QIAF 2018, the biggest-of-its-kind art festival in Qatar, opened with an exhibition of the best works of participating artists at the Doha Fire Station’s Gallery Space. More than 150 artworks were on display.
The presence of artists from nations like Costa Rica, South Korea, China and Japan nicely highlighted QIAF 2018’s universal appeal.
The Doha Fire Station buzzed with raw creative energy as artists showcased their unique styles, in different mediums, leading to applause and admiration from those gathered around.
Organisers had received a total of 292 applications for this year’s QIAF, from which they selected the final 147. The event has been conceptualised as a cultural platform for people from different countries to learn about Qatar, which is all set to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The participants were taken on a country-wide tour covering iconic cultural locations such as the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara Cultural Village, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Souq Waqif, Doha Corniche and The Pearl Qatar, among others.
The event featured an art panel discussion as well as six master classes, conducted by the most experienced artists from among the participants.
While QIAF 2018 is done and dusted, be sure to mark your calendars well in advance for next year’s event. If you are an art connoisseur, then this is one event you simply cannot afford to miss.
HINA KHAN: CREATE & FIRE STATION ARTISTS' STUDIOS RESIDENCY AWARD 2018.
Create and Fire Station Artists’ Studios are pleased to announce the recipient of a new one-month Artist Residency Award based at Fire Station Artists’ Studios. The award, offered to an artist from an ethnic minority background, commenced from the month of June 2018. The Residency timeframe incorporated International Refugee week (18-22 June 2018). It is funded through the Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme, which is managed by Create.
Hina Khan’s work is the constant search for the best way to interpret ideas and express ideologies through symbolism. Having completed a BFA (Bachelor in Fine Arts) from F. G Degree College, she completed my MFA (Masters in Fine Arts) from FJWU (Fatima Jinnah Women University), Pakistan in 2003, with Miniature Painting as Major. Using a mixture of traditional and innovative techniques, Hina’s work portrays social issues, immigration and humanitarian crisis like prostitution, gender discrimination, restrictions, trauma, child abuse and killing.
Hina has participated in a number of exhibitions in recent years, and recently developed new work for her solo show, which opened the 5th July 2018 at Ballina Art Center. Hina’s experience of living in a Direct provision Centre has had a marked impact on her work. Hina finds that living in fix boundaries makes it difficult to explore creativity and experimentation and has spent time researching the impact of such circumstances with fellow residence. This residency provides Hina space to work with freedom, enhancing her capabilities as an artist and is an opportunity to develop her collaborative arts practice further.

Doha (Qatar) Fire Station - One of the best Museums in Qatar (360-degree Video)
One of the best museums in Qatar - The Fire Station Museum. Formerly it was the headquarters of the Civil Defense, today is one of the most important places for art. Not only local artists show their works, also for example Ai Weiwei exhibited his works. If you come to Qatar, you should definitely visit the museum. It's my eighth exhibition I've ever visited there. I filmed the last visit in 360 degrees.
