Track and Tower Trail - Algonquin Provincial Park
The Track and Tower Trail is a fairly long and moderately rugged trail that visits Cache Lake, Grant Lake, the old Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway, and has a side trail to the location of an old tower.

The Track and Tower Trail at km 25.0 on Highway 60 in Algonquin Provincial Park, is one of our favourite hiking trails in the park. It passes through a variety of interesting landscapes, including beaver ponds, lakes, and old burn zone, Eastern Hemlock and Cedar groves, a historic train railway bed with evidence of trestles visible and a nice lookout where an old fire tower used to stand.

Track & Tower Trail | Algonquin Provincial Park, ON
The Track & Tower Trail in Algonquin is approximately 10.0 km when the look-out look is added to the standard 7.5km trail. This trail took about 3 hours to complete. The lookout is one of my favourites in Algonquin Park and this trail takes you through wooded and lakeside areas of the park. There are many sections of the trail that are steep inclines up and down and I would rank this as a difficult day trail.

Algonquin Provincial Park Fall Foliage | #fallColours #Canada | #Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower
Aspen's yellow fall colour, often referred to as the golden encore is at their best colour intensity, likely until the next high wind or heavy rain event. Aspen, part of the poplar family, shown in the live views of the Algonquin Park Webcam for example, are showing their brilliant yellow-gold colour.
The maple understory, visible at eye level, is offering photographic opportunities of red, orange, and yellow coloured leaves. Planning a walk on the Park's interpretive trails is a good way to see the current understory colours. Temperatures dipping to below freezing with frost has increased the intensity of the understory colours in Algonquin Park, but fragile leaves in the canopy (crowns) continue to fall with any wind and rain events. Maples are now showing the fuzzy gray colour of bare crowns in landscape views.
Tamarack, Algonquin’s only cone-bearing tree that drops all its needles, is showing various intensities of yellow/golden-yellow depending upon the exact location. Tamarack are increasing in their yellow colour, prior to dropping their needles in preparation for winter. Search for Tamaracks in wetlands and bogs including the Spruce Bog Boardwalk, the Mizzy Lake Trail, or along the Opeongo Road.
Fall colour is subject to numerous environmental variables such as daylight length, moisture, temperature, frost, wind, heavy rain, etc., so the exact peak of fall colour is difficult to determine in advance. High winds, rain, or even snow can sometimes quickly result in fragile leaves being knocked off the trees increasing what is called leaf fall.

Lookout Trail - Algonquin Provincial Park
The ascent up to the cliff of the Lookout Trail in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. The cliff over looks the Maples, Pines and Birches. I have been in the Spring and Winter, but wanted to see this sight in the Fall, however I was a week too early. The start of the colours are there, but it would be an awesome sight now (End Sept/ Start Oct 2009)

Canada: Ontario, Algonquin Provincial Park
Algonquin Park was formed in 1893. Its original primary purpose was as a timber reserve designed to keep forest-clearing settlers out of valuable timber lands.
Algonquin's landscape consists of numerous small lakes, rock outcroppings and rolling hills. Marshes and large swamps are scattered throughout the park, and can provide excellent wildlife viewing.
Lookout Trail is a 2.1 km loop trail that is fairly steep and rugged, but rewards the hiker with a magnificent view of several hundred square kilometers of Algonquin.
Hardwood Lookout Trail is a 1 kilometre loop trail introducing the ecology of a typical Algonquin hardwood forest and culminates in a fine view of Smoke Lake and the surrounding hills.
