China, Britain Celebrate 400th Anniversary of Great Chinese, British Dramatists
China and Britain jointly held a symposium in Stratford,England on Saturday to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of great British dramatist William Shakespeare and his contemporary Chinese counterpart Tang Xianzu.
Stratford sitting along the Avon River is the birth place of Shakespeare.
Chris Saint, leader of Stratford on Avon District Council, said in his speech that Shakespeare and Tang Xianzu lived in the same period of time and their work has far reaching impact on today’s world.
Hu Sishe, vice president of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, expressed his hope of setting up a long-term mechanism in memory of the two great dramatists in both countries.
On the same day Fuzhou, hometown of Tang Xianzu, established sisterly ties with Stratford and donated a bronze statue of Shakespeare and Tang Xianzu to the Foundation of Stratford. A duplicate also stands in the memorial hall of Tang Xianzu in Fuzhou.
Huang Zhenling, a scholar of Tang Xianzu from East China Institute of Technology, Li Ruru, professor of Chinese drama studies from the University of Leeds and some other scholars introduced their research findings of Tang Xianzu studies, and also demonstrated achievements in drama and opera exchanges between the two countries at the symposium.
The symposium was concluded with an episode from Tang's classic drama Peony Pavilion staged by Fuzhou Tea-Picking Opera dramatists. The theatrical genre is listed as the national intangible cultural heritage in China.
The symposium also marked the opening of the Fuzhou cultural week in Stratford.
