In Bad Faith: Child Sex Abuse and the Catholic Church | Fault Lines
In a series of exclusive interviews with Fault Lines, several men across New York City come forward with painful memories of abuse by a Catholic priest.
They say that Father John Paddack - who was ordained in 1984 and had been ministering in New York until he was suspended in July - molested them during confession and counselling sessions in different Catholic schools across the city.
The men allege years of abuse by Paddack, sparking the latest revelations in a decades-old scandal that has shaken the Catholic Church to its foundation.
And they say that, in the intervening decades, Paddack remained in ministry - working in close proximity to children.
The church should stop hiding, says Joseph Caramanno, one of the men who says he was abused by Paddack while in high school, and one of the first to open a public case against the priest.
They are allowing these predator priests to frolic around aimlessly on the streets of New York, with open access, under the shield of a collar, he says.
Another victim, Gabriel* - now a father of two - says he was molested by Paddack as a 12-year-old Catholic school student.
That destroyed my youth, he says about the abuse. That could have killed me, honestly.
For many years, these men shared their stories privately, among close confidants. But when New York's restrictive statute of limitations law for victims of child sex abuse was amended in 2019, they went public with their claims.
The men are suing the Catholic Church, and calling on the city's most powerful cleric - Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York - to remove Father Paddack from ministry.
The Archdiocese has known about the allegations against Monsignor Paddack for years, more than six years. Those allegations have been kept quiet by the Archdiocese, says Mike Reck, one of the lawyers for the victims.
Cardinal Dolan, meanwhile, has told the 2.5 million Catholics under his watch to rest assured, claiming there are no active priests facing credible abuse allegations in his Archdiocese. Clergy abuse, he said, was largely a problem of the past.
However, our investigation into Father Paddack revealed a different story, one that raises questions about New York's Catholic hierarchy, and whether its leader has put the prestige of the church above the survival of its victims.
For this investigation, Fault Lines spoke to five of the men who accuse Father Paddack of abuse; allegations that form a pattern starting from the early 1980s until the early 2000s, the victims' lawyers say.

SUMMARY
=======
Methodism (also known as the Methodist movement) is a group of historically related denominations of Protestant Christianity which derive their inspiration from the life and teachings of John Wesley. George Whitefield and John's brother Charles Wesley were also significant early leaders in the movement. It originated as a revival movement within the 18th-century Church of England and became a separate denomination after Wesley's death. The movement spread throughout the British Empire, the United States, and beyond because of vigorous missionary work, today claiming approximately 80 million adherents worldwide.Wesley's theology focused on sanctification and the effect of faith on the character of a Christian. Distinguishing Methodist doctrines include the new birth, an assurance of salvation, imparted righteousness, the possibility of perfection in love, the works of piety, and the primacy of Scripture. Most Methodists teach that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for all of humanity and that salvation is available for all; in theology, this view is known as Arminianism. This teaching rejects the Calvinist position that God has pre-ordained the salvation of a select group of people. However, Whitefield and several other early leaders of the movement were considered Calvinistic Methodists and held to the Calvinist position. Methodism emphasises charity and support for the sick, the poor, and the afflicted through the works of mercy. These ideals are put into practice by the establishment of hospitals, orphanages, soup kitchens, and schools to follow Christ's command to spread the gospel and serve all people. The movement has a wide variety of forms of worship, ranging from high church to low church in liturgical usage. Denominations that descend from the British Methodist tradition are generally less ritualistic, while American Methodism is more so, the United Methodist Church in particular. Methodism is known for its rich musical tradition, and Charles Wesley was instrumental in writing much of the hymnody of the Methodist Church.Early Methodists were drawn from all levels of society, including the aristocracy, but the Methodist preachers took the message to labourers and criminals who tended to be left outside organised religion at that time. In Britain, the Methodist Church had a major effect in the early decades of the developing working class (1760–1820). In the United States, it became the religion of many slaves who later formed black churches in the Methodist tradition.

Portland 1869 Chapel
This is a look inside the old chapel in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Portland Maine. It is still active and has a communion rail...
The origins of the Catholic community in what is now Maine date much earlier than the middle of the 19th century however. In the summer of 1604, Pierre du Gua, Sieur de Monts, a Huguenot, founded a mixed colony of about 80 French Catholics and Protestants on Ste. Croix Island, not far from present-day Calais...
During the American Revolution, the scattered Native American communities in Maine were periodically visited by chaplains of the French Navy allied with the rebel cause. By 1785, Loyalist settlers from New England forced Acadian farmers in New Brunswick off their lands, causing them to flee into the Madawaska territory in Aroostook County above the Great Falls on the St. John River, planting the roots of what would become a string of parishes on both sides of the St. John Valley. In 1789, Bishop John Carroll of Baltimore, the first bishop in the newly-formed United States of America, sent the French refugee priest, Jean-Louis de Cheverus, to serve the Native Americans at Indian Island and to found what would become St. Patrick's Parish in Newcastle. Parishes in North Whitefield, Eastport, Machias, and Portland followed in close succession for growing numbers of immigrants from Ireland. Bishop Benedict Fenwick of Boston founded a utopian Catholic farming community at Benedicta in 1833 with the hopes of even establishing a college there....
During the 1850's, anti-Catholic prejudice led to the burning of the churches in Bath and Lewiston, and the tarring and feathering of Fr. John Bapst, S.J., by a mob in Ellsworth.
In this climate, the Reverend Henry B. Coskery, Vicar General of Baltimore, declined to accept the appointment as first Bishop of Portland in 1853. It was not until 1855, that the Diocese's first bishop, David W. Bacon (1815-1874) of Brooklyn arrived in Portland at night, dressed in as a layman in order to avoid a riot. During Bishop Bacon's tenure the first Catholic schools were established in Portland, Bangor, and North Whitefield. After a halt due to the Civil War, and the destruction wrought by the Great Fire of Portland in 1866, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, its chapel, and the Cathedral Residence were finally opened in 1869. In 1870 jurisdiction for the Madawaska territory was finally transferred from the Diocese of St. John, New Brunswick to the Diocese of Portland....

This year, St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Augusta, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Hallowell, and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Augusta all joined under Prince of Peace's roof at 209 Eastern Ave. in Augusta to worship, given their diminishing numbers. This is their first Christmas together, and they are all represented in the choir, singing Oh, Holy Night.
Sexual assault lawsuits could bankrupt Catholic church in New Brunswick
Almost every month for a year, lawsuits have been filed against the Catholic Church in New Brunswick by people seeking compensation for alleged sexual abuse by priests. CBC News has found at least 56 claims are still before the courts, despite an extensive conciliation process a few years ago. With escalating settlement costs, the Archdiocese of Moncton is facing bankruptcy.

Shocking video shows brazen shooting in broad daylight in Fairfield
Warning: graphic content:
A 28-year-old man gunned down at a Fairfield gas station in March was apparently killed in a dispute over an engagement ring, and the brutal shooting was captured on store surveillance video.
Adarius Elon Williams, a father of four who celebrated a birthday the day before he was killed, died April 8 in the parking lot of the Citgo station on Milstead Road. Vincent Washington, 25, and Barbara Washington, 31, are charged with murder in Williams’ death. Additionally, Vincent Washington is charged with first-degree kidnapping because the woman who drove him to the gas station said she wanted to leave, and he threatened her with her life.
The Washington siblings, who lost their own sister to murder last year, are set to be in court this afternoon for their preliminary hearings. AL.com has obtained the store surveillance video of the killing, which shows a man with a towel wrapped around his head – identified by police as Vincent Washington – shoot Williams multiple times, nine of those shots fired almost point-blank after while Williams had already collapsed on the ground. Police have said Williams was not armed. According to police and court records, the brother and sister told a friend of Barbara Washington they would buy her gas if she drove them to the Citgo station that day. They were going to meet Williams because he wanted the engagement ring back that he had given to Barbara Washington. Williams’ fiancé at the time of his death was also with him at the gas station the day he was killed.
The friend drove them to the service station, but told police she didn’t know what was going to happen. Once they arrived there, Vincent Washington got out of the car with a towel wrapped around his head. When the friend realized something was amiss, she said she wanted to leave. At that point, according to court records, Vincent Washington told her, “(Expletive), if you drive off I’ll shoot you in the back of the head.”
The friend said she was afraid, and did what she was told to do. The video shows Washington and Williams arguing outside of the vehicle for about 12 seconds, and then Washington opens fire on Williams. Williams fell to the ground on his back, and Washington stood over him and fired nine more shots.
Witnesses on the scene gave a description of a white Nissan Altima leaving the area. They said the vehicle was occupied by two females and a male. A short time later, Bessemer police said, a man suffering from gunshot wounds to the stomach and the hand showed up at UAB West, and a white vehicle reportedly had brought him there.
Authorities confirmed that man – later identified as Vincent Washington - at the hospital was involved in the Fairfield shooting. About 8 p.m., Fairfield police spotted the white Altima and stopped the vehicle. Barbara Washington and another woman were taken into custody. The second woman wasn’t charged.
After the shooting, according to court records, Barbara Washington took the gun used in the slaying to a friend’s house to hide it.
At some point during the incident, Vincent Washington was also shot by someone trying to help Williams. Police have never said who shot the suspect. He spent several days in the hospital before he was released and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. Both of the siblings have remained jailed since then with bond set at $60,000.
Bill Veitch, the district attorney in Jefferson County’s Bessemer Cutoff, confirmed he has seen the video and said it shows the urgency needed in stopping the violence. “Any of us could have been out there at those gas pumps that day,’’ Veitch said. “This war on violence cannot be won unless the communities unite, tear down the walls that have built between us and see, hear and report.”
“It’s going to take a great deal of individual courage to become involved in this struggle,’’ he said. “Join with me and our law enforcement officers, our churches, our judges, to fight these heartless hoodlums. This video is graphic evidence of how great this epidemic has become.”

Calais Maine Cemetery Tour Performance - Candace Dwelley as Charlotte Mason and Lura Jackson as
Each year, the SCHS puts on a well-attended cemetery tour in Calais, Maine. Society members dress as former residents of Calais and share their stories with guests. In this performance, Candace Dwelley regales the crowd as Charlotte Mason before Lura Jackson delivers a poem as Josephine Holmes.
The wind was beginning to pick up, so the sound cuts in and out at times. The full text of the poem reads:
Welcome, thou laggard Spring,
Late hastening to fling
A sudden glory on this northern shore!
Again with wonder fraught
Thy miracle is wrought,
The dead earth quickens, life floods in once more.
O budding Spring-time sweet,
We, too arise and greet
Thy coming footsteps with a hope new born,
After the struggle, peace,
After the long pain, release
And out of the blackest night blossoms the rose of dawn.
No call to combat rude
Summons the multitude
Slow gathering where the flag serenely waves;
Upon the silent air
Is fragrance everywhere
Of flowers dropped softly on beloved graves.
O memory, touch tenderly
Our hearts today; let the long vanished years
Smile through a mist that is not wholly tears.
Bright with a golden glow
The days of long ago
Leap suddenly to life, again the street
Is all astir with eager hurrying feet,
We hear the fife's shrill call, the murmuring hum
Of many voices, while with beating drum
And steady tramp the marching soldiers come.
O brave you champions, smiling unafraid,
O true hearts on your country's altar laid,
A million hands the laurel wreath shall bring,
But we, in the old home late-blossoming,
Come softly, bringing flowers, so to express
All that our hearts contain of love and tenderness.
O granite gray,
Stand forth today,
Tell all the gathered throng
That love and honor shall eternally belong
To these and such as they;
Tell all they fought to win-- a flag to float
Whose fluttering fold can make the tiniest boat
That sails the sea inviolate-- no more to wave
Its mocking splendor o'er the hunted slave
A nation broad and free
As the encircling sea,
Yet not to be divided, one perpetually.
Speak to these youths and maids whose happy eyes
Know not the terror of a war's surprise;
Bid them come hither, come with reverent feet,
Tell them love is more dear and life more sweet
Because these men have died. Speak thou for us today. Tell all we cannot say
O granite gray.
Heart of the northern hills,
Thy silent presence thrills
Like some clear note from silver bugle blown,
A herald of good cheer,
Proclaiming joy, not fear
Telling of blessed peace and warfare done.
So we are glad, not sad, well-knowing
Within our veins the self-same blood is flowing
That fired our soldiers to the battle going;
So we are well assured,
Beloved country, should'st thou speak the word,
It were a privilege most sweet and high
For thy dear sake to die.
--Anna Holmes, 1893
