The Tale of A Town - St. Catharines | The Standard
Presented by FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, FIXT POINT and Suitcase in Point Theatre Company at Oddfellows Hall, 36 James Street, St. Catharines.
The Tale of a Town – St. Catharines will be presented at the historic Odd Fellows Hall, 36 James St from 13 October – 23 October 2015.
The show takes audiences inside the newsroom as staff create the first print of the first edition of The New Old Standard, a retrospective report on downtown St. Catharines. Inspired by living memories gathered through over 100 interviews with business leaders and community members including Walter Ostanek, Doug Herod, Marilyn I. Walker and many of our City’s leaders. The Tale of a Town - St. Catharines weaves oral histories and archives with live music and performance to take you on a trip to the time of Jerry's Alley, Art's Restaurant and the glory days of downtown when everything was the best. Or was it? Maybe the best is yet to come...
The Tale of a Town is a theatre and media project with an aim to capture the collective community memory of Canada's Main Streets, one story at a time, while preserving local heritage and promoting neighbourhood culture. The production was developed at In the Soil Arts Festival in 2011 and 2013. In 2014, FIXT POINT launched a national tour of The Tale of a Town - Canada in collaboration with The National Arts Centre and presenting partners from across the country.
Our community has been dreaming of a dedicated facility for the performing arts for many years, and the time has nearly come for us to inhabit our new home. As excitement and anticipation build for the public opening of our new home for the performing arts, the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre invites the community to join this celebration of downtown St. Catharines past, present and future.

This unique multi-disciplinary performance is the culmination of a four-year creative residency that brought Niagara-based artists together with Andrea Nann, Artistic Director of the acclaimed Dreamwalker Dance Company. Considered one of Canada’s leading collaborative artists, Nann has brought her signature Shebang process to Niagara, sharing a holistic ensemble-based creation practice with established and emerging artists.
