Pelee Island Bird Observatory - Introduction - Short Version
The Pelee Island Bird Observatory (PIBO) is an NGO devoted to the study of migration and conservation of birds. Pelee Island, Ontario. Please visit: pibo.ca
The Pelee Island Bird Observatory is a non-profit organisation devoted to the study and conservation of birds. In partnership with the Pelee Island Heritage Centre, the observatory conducts intensive migration-monitoring research and breeding bird studies on Pelee Island from April to November. PIBO's field station at Fish Point Provincial Nature Reserve is open to the public in the spring and autumn, with educational programs provided to visiting school groups throughout the month of May.
PIBO's purpose is to collect and disseminate data that will help the international programme that is working to understand changes taking place in the populations of migratory birds. While this is our work and our responsibility, we recognize that birds exist in a wide range of cultural and imaginative contexts, as well as in specifically scientific ones. To that end we are introducing a number of satellite areas, with the hope this site will be of interest both to serious birders and to general enthusiasts alike.
PIBO's Mandate:
• Long-term migration monitoring research on Pelee Island as a member of the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network (CMMN).
• Long-term studies of Pelee's significant breeding bird communities.
• To serve as an educational centre for the public, school organisations and the community, and to promote volunteer participation in local conservation projects.
• To highlight the importance of Pelee Island's unique natural heritage.

Terra Nova National Park - Newfoundland and Labrador
Tucked into the Newfoundland coast is a beautiful enigma, Terra Nova National Park. It's a place where assumptions of the truth prove false. Its rugged boreal forest was protected from fire for decades, a decision that is in fact destroying many of the most prominent trees. The introduction of the moose seemed benign, but now the next generation of trees is being decimated. The otter was though to be a threat to the delicate cod nursery, but instead it is found to be a protector. Terra Nova National Park is a testament to reexamination and perseverance against everything you once thought right.

Bon Echo Provincial Park is a provincial park in South Central Ontario north of Kaladar, Ontario, approximately 6 km north of Cloyne.
Bon Echo features several lakes, including part of Mazinaw Lake, the second-deepest lake in Ontario. The southeastern shore of Mazinaw Lake features the massive 100 m high Mazinaw Rock, an escarpment rising out of the water with many native pictographs. The unofficial mascot of Bon Echo Park is the Ojibwe trickster figure and culture hero, Nanabush, who is among the pictographs found in the area. Pictographs are often confused with petroglyphs, which are rock carvings rather than the over 260 rock paintings found on Mazinaw.
Webster's Falls is a curtain waterfall 22 metres in height. Located at the Spencer Gorge / Webster's Falls Conservation area in Greensville, its source is Spencer Creek. It is one of two falls within the Spencer Gorge, and with a crest of 24 metres, it is the largest in the region. It is also probably the most popular and widely known fall in Hamilton, and has the biggest park associated with a waterfall.
Tews Falls is a ribbon waterfall 41 metres in height, making it the tallest in Hamilton. Located at the Spencer Gorge / Webster's Falls Conservation Area in Greensville, its source is Logie's Creek.
Awenda Provincial Park is a provincial park in western Ontario located on the northern tip of the Penetanguishene Peninsula on Georgian Bay. The park occupies an area of 29.15 square kilometres (11.25 sq mi). It is classified as a Natural Environment Park and therefore all land is protected.
Much of this area was logged around the beginning of the 20th century, so most of the forests here are second growth. However, the park supports a rich variety of plant and animal life. The park is home to 32 species of amphibians and reptiles.
The Pinery Provincial Park is a park located on Lake Huron near Grand Bend, Ontario. It occupies an area of 25.32 square kilometres (6,330 acres).
The park features the largest area of Oak Savanna in Ontario. To preserve this habitat, a population control program for White-tailed Deer has been implemented. During the early 1960s, because the value of the native savanna was not recognized, large numbers of Red and White pine trees were planted in the park, displacing the native vegetation. That is also how the park got its name.
Bruce Peninsula National Park is a national park on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada. Located on a part of the Niagara Escarpment, the park comprises 156 square kilometres and is one of the largest protected areas in southern Ontario, forming the core of UNESCO's Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve. The park offers opportunities for many outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, and bird watching. The park has trails ranging in difficulty from easy to expert, and connects to the Bruce Trail.
Everyone hikes to the Grotto. It's the most popular attraction in Bruce Peninsula National Park. A big cave on the shore, it was carved out by the waves of Georgian Bay over thousands of years. From the Bruce Trail climb down through the natural chimney in the rock of the Niagara Escarpment. It's a pristine setting; there are no signs, lights, stairs or handrails here. The cave itself is stunning, with sunlight from the outside revealing a brilliant underwater tunnel on the inside. You can walk along a ledge inside its cavity or swim in its cool, clear, turquoise water.
Sauble Falls Provincial Park is located in the community of Sauble Falls, town of South Bruce Peninsula, Bruce County in southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is in the lower drainage basin of the Sauble River, which flows into Lake Huron. is also the downstream terminus of the Rankin River canoe route
Fathom Five National Marine Park is a National Marine Conservation Area in the Georgian Bay part of Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada, that seeks to protect and display shipwrecks and lighthouses, and conserve freshwater ecosystems. The many shipwrecks make the park a popular scuba diving destination, and glass bottom boat tours leave Tobermory regularly, allowing tourists to see the shipwrecks without having to get wet. Many visitors camp at nearby Bruce Peninsula National Park and use the park as a base to explore Fathom Five and the surrounding area during the day.
Fathom Five also contains numerous islands, notably Flowerpot Island, which has rough camping facilities, marked trails, and its namesake flowerpots, outlying stacks of escarpment cliff that stand a short distance from the island, most with vegetation (including trees) still growing on them.

-20°C Winter Camping in Bruce Peninsula
Winter camping is a must-try for any true outdoor enthusiast. Over the holidays I finally gathered the right gear and was able to give it a shot in early 2019. Our destination? Bruce Peninsula National Park. Winter Camping at Stormhaven is actually pretty easy to pull off once you find the correct trail. The snowshoeing is easy going and we pulled sleds. The wood-elevated platforms also offer up plenty of coverage... It definitely helped when wind hit 50km/hr on night #2
The gear I used:
North Face - Banchee 50
Marmot Traillight 2P
Columbia Men's Peakfreak XCRSN XCEL Mid Outdry Boots
Mountain Hardware Lamina Z Blaze Synthetic Sleeping Bag - Regular -15F/-26C
Pelican Nomad 40 Ice Sled

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve - British Columbia
On the west side of Vancouver Island, stands the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve - one of Canada's most beautiful and powerful parks. Raging pacific storms pound 125 kilometers of rugged western shore into one of the world's premier coastal temperate rainforests - dumping an average annual rainfall of nearly 3 and a half meters. With all that rainfall comes unique vegetation. The park's formidable Sitka spruce can grow to 100 meters tall and boasts a trunk you could drive a small car thru. Despite the richness of the environment, it is also home to 42 species-at-risk. From tiny flowers, to giant marine mammals, to the most fragile rainforest ecology, Pac Rim in spring showcases the struggle for survival on a rugged windswept coast.
