Fisheating Creek paddle in Palmdale, Florida
Adventure paddle through the majestic Fisheating Creek. We explored the less-traveled route a full five miles downstream from the launch at Fisheating Creek Outpost. The creek has been open to the public for about 20 years, but was so desolate on the day of our visit that it felt like a place still forbidden to outsiders. The stately cypress trees spread their roots far along the shore and shut off any noise from the outside world, leaving us alone with a chorus of cries from wading birds, shrieks from hunting hawks, and splashes from the impressive number of turtles and alligators startled by our approach. Near the end of our journey we came to Paradise lake, a tranquil expanse of water filled to the brim with alligators. Watching the broad, scaly backs of gigantic reptiles sliding past each other though rich tannin-dark waters made for the perfect scene over which to enjoy a light lunch. The current traveling back was light and forgiving, but there are several portions that are shallow and require portaging at most times of the year.
If you plan to check out this route be sure to check the water levels (see link below) before you go. 1.5' is the recommended minimum level for paddlers. We took this trip when the water was at 1.35' and absolutely loved every minute of it, but we enjoy mixing up our kayaking trips with some portaging. This might not be a good option for someone who doesn't enjoy the added challenge of frequently getting in and out in order to walk their boat.

Florida Trail Association's South Fl Chapters' Fisheating Creek 15 Mile Hike
March 22-23, Big Cypress and Happy Hoofer members of the Florida Trail Association gathered to hike the 15 mile trail along Fisheating Creek from SR 78 to US 27. Along the way, we passed through one of the most important Native American archaeological digs in the US, Fort Center. Human habitation can be traced back to 1000 BCE here. We also slogged through the now infamous Cowbone Marsh before camping out at the originally named Rock Lake AKA Paradise Lake. The next day we hike out the remaining 3 miles for a beautiful weekend.

This is a video of Fish Eating Creek from the Outpost (Picnic Lake, mile marker 21) to one of our favorite spots along the river just downstream from mile marker 29, but today with the water being at 6 ft. high there wasn't much of a campsite left. Every part of the river was filmed along the way, the video runs at 8 times the normal speed. 8 miles of paddling the river upstream in less than 19 minutes. Not Time-Lapse it's sped up.
