The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Corpus Christi District - Part of a $32 million two-phase project to improve mobility and safety. A new direct connector bridge on Interstate 37 in Corpus Christi was officially opened October 17, 2011 and created a new link for commercial truck traffic to the Port of Corpus Christi.
The construction is a 4,415-foot long bridge is 28-feet wide including a single 14-foot travel lane, an eight-foot inside shoulder and a six-foot outside shoulder. The bridge is projected to carry approximately 500 large trucks per day between southbound Interstate 37 and the Joe Fulton International Trade Corridor. The bridge is adjacent to the soon-to-be-opened Texas State Veterans Cemetery. This substructure is decorated with 53 medallions honoring the United States Armed Forces -- Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, Coast Guard, and Prisoners of War and Missing In Action. The retaining walls near Hearns Ferry and at the intersection of McKinzie Road are decorated with images of American and Texas flags. Local dignitaries, including State Senator Juan Chuy Hinojosa, State Representative Connie Scott, Nueces County Judge S. Loyd Neal, Nueces County Commissioner Joe Gonzalez, Nueces County Commissioner Oscar Ortiz, Corpus Christi City Council Member Chris Adler, Corpus Christi City Council Member Nelda Martinez, Port Commission Chairman Mike Carrell, Port Commissioner Richard Borchard and Port Commissioner Mike Scott took part in a traditional ribbon-cutting celebrating the opening of the bridge. Following the event, dignitaries and TxDOT officials led a caravan of 25 vehicles across the bridge as barricades were removed and the bridge was officially opened to the public.
