Russia: Crypt and remains of wealthy warrior’s family unearthed in Phanagoria dig

A well-preserved crypt containing the ancient remains of a warrior, his wife and three have been unearthed in the Eastern necropolis of ancient Phanagoria in Krasnodar Krai.
The high status of the warrior and his family is indicated by the depth of their burial - more than five meters, and the valuables they were buried with, as well as the other items found in the crypt. The remains date back to the 5th century AD.
The archeological expedition in Phanagoria, organized by the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences was coming to an end just as the discovery was made.
“In these graves we can see the remains of a family: an adult man - a warrior and a horseman and a woman - his wife and three children. Judging by what we have found here the man was served the city’s army. He was a horseman, because we found riding stirrups and spurs too. There is also a leather harness attached to a belt which was used to carry a sword. The buckles on the harness are really worn-out which means this warrior has seen a lot of fighting. He was unsheathing and sheathing his sword again and again,” head of the Necropolis division at the Phanagoria archeological dig Aleksei Voroshilov said.
According to archaeologists, the warrior and his wife along with his three children may have died from the plague or during an attack by Nomadic tribes.
Several other valuable artifacts have been found this summer in excavations above ground in ancient Phanagoria and underwater, in the flooded parts of the ancient city.
“This year we have discovered very accurate and strong evidence [that Christianity was founded in Phanagoria in the fifth century], which is a marble tabletop, which could be used as an altar in a church. We have discovered a marble baptistery for infants or probably for toddlers as well. It is not very big, nevertheless it is massive and made from marble,” said head of Phanagoria open-air museum Vladimir Kuznetsov regarding the claims the discovery confirms Phanagoria was the birthplace of Christianity in Russia.
The archaeological finds are not only of interest to Russian experts but to the wider world as they are unique among other nation’s discoveries.
“One of our underwater expeditions discovered a ship some time ago, which was sunk following the uprising in Phanagoria against Mithridates VI of Pontus which occured exactly in 62 BC. This ship is one of the most ancient one ever found in the world,” said head of Phanagoria open-air museum Vladimir Kuznetsov.
Around 250 people took part in this year’s archaeological dig at Phanagoria, among them were experts from France and Bulgaria as well as student volunteers.

Read more Information about our Ukraine River Cruise:
Welcome to Ukraine, one of Europe's last hidden treasures. Long in the shadow of the Soviet Empire, this lovely country, rich in history, culture and natural beauty, regained its independence in 1991 and opened its doors to the world. From gorgeous Odessa, the gateway to the Black Sea, to Yalta and its world-class beaches, to Zaporozhye, the home of the fearless Cossack warriors, and to cosmopolitan Kiev, with its wide, tree-lined boulevards and a thousand-year-old history, Ukraine is a true treasure chest of natural and man-made attractions waiting to be explored. We are pleased to introduce to you this new and exciting travel destination in the hopes that we may one day share in the pleasure of your company as you discover Ukraine with us.
One of the best ways to explore this diverse country is by cruising the magnificent Dnieper River. At 1,420 miles in length, it is the third longest river in Europe, after the Volga and the Danube. The benefits of a river cruise are many. No packing and unpacking, as our floating hotel will take you from one exciting destination to the next. All your meals are included, as are most of your shore excursions. Our on-board staff of guides, cruise directors, and talented entertainers will delight you with their lectures, music, and hospitality. Sit back and enjoy an unforgettable journey from Odessa to Kiev, and all of the unique Ukrainian stops in between.
As either a starting or ending point for our cruises, Odessa is sure to delight you. A mild climate and a youthful, vibrant population have drawn the rich and the famous to this Black Sea port for centuries. Its most famous citizen, the French Duke De Richelieu, transformed the city into a thriving center of commerce and culture. Its Opera House, and the Potemkin Stairs, are world-renowned, while its tree-lined promenades and classical buildings painted in pastel hues invoke another era. Life on board our floating hotel will be as exciting as the ports you will be visiting.
Our first stop, Sevastopol, is home to the Russian Navy's feared Black Sea Fleet. Closed to foreign visitors until the early 1990s, Sevastopol today is a city of clean and orderly boulevards, neo-classical Russian buildings, and the unique Panorama Museum. As our ship sails from Sevastopol to Yalta, the optional bus excursion across the Crimean peninsula will take you to see the unique cliff-side fortress of Swallow's Nest. The historic Livadia Palace, the location where Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill decided the fate of post-war Europe, will be equally impressive. Stunningly situated between the Crimean mountains and the Black Sea, Yalta has been a major destination for poets, politicians, artists, writers, and the Russian Czar's family. Kherson is the gateway to the Dnieper delta. Here, you will board smaller boats that will take you to an authentic Ukrainian fishing village. A local family will host an al fresco lunch, accompanied with some improvised entertainment.
Zaporozhye, a name that conjures up images of fierce, pony-tailed warriors, is also the home of the first independence movements of Ukraine. Here you will enjoy a tour of the city, and a visit to the unique Zaporozhye Cossack museum. The optional Cossack show will feature their horsemanship, weapon skills, and music. Home to Ukraine's favorite son, Taras Shevchenko, Kanev is both his birthplace and burial ground. After a tour of his museum, you will enjoy a special shashlik barbecue. There will be wine, entertainment, and a selection of songs performed by our enthusiastic flower girls.
Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is also recognized as the birthplace of Kievan Rus, or Russia. It came to be in 988, when Prince Vladmir the Great baptized the whole country and introduced Christianity to this part of the world. Today, it's a city of wide boulevards, giant chestnut trees, and a smiling and youthful population. The people are friendly, the city is beautiful. We hope you have enjoyed our short intro to Ukraine. we also hope we will have the pleasure of your company in the nearest future, as we sail along the beautiful Black Sea and the romantic Dnieper River.

Millions of jellyfish seen float off Crimea
(11 Nov 2017) Millions of jellyfish were seen floating near the shore off Balaklava pier in Crimea on Saturday morning.
Such a large number of jellyfish coming close to the shore is quite a rare phenomenon and it isn't clear what attracted them.
Boats and ships moored off the pier looked as though they were in ice due to the density of white jellyfish surrounding them.
Children were seen trying to catch the jellyfish to take a closer look.

MAHMUDIYE
Ottoman ship Mahmudiye
Mahmudiye was a ship of the line of the Ottoman Navy. She was a three-masted three-decked 128-gunned sailing ship, which could perhaps be considered to be one of the few completed heavy-first rate battleships. Mahmudiye, with a roaring lion as the ship's figurehead, was intended to serve to reconstitute the morale of the nation after the loss of the fleet at the Battle of Navarino in 1827. The flagship was for many years the largest warship in the world.
She was constructed by the naval architect Mehmet Kalfa and the naval engineer Mehmet Efendi on the order of Mahmud II (reigned between 1808–1839) at the Imperial Arsenal, on the Golden Horn in Constantinople.
The 201 × 56 kadem (1 kadem = 37.887 cm) or 76.15 m × 21.22 m (249.8 ft × 69.6 ft) ship of the line carried 1,280 sailors on board.
With the introduction of steam power at the end of the 1840s, the conversion of the pure sail-driven ship into a steamer was considered. However, the lack of the necessary space for the steam engine on board meant the idea could not be realized.
Mahmudiye participated in the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–55) during the Crimean War (1854–56) under the command of Admiral of the Fleet Kayserili Ahmet Pasha. She was honored with the title Gazi following her successful mission in Sevastopol.
She was decommissioned in 1874 and broken up at the Imperial Shipyard.

Crimea: Memory, Grief, and a New Life
Subscribe to Vesti News
Today, in Crimea they remember a tragic date. 73 years ago, on May 18, 1944, a mandatory deportation began for the Crimean Tatars, Greeks, Bulgarians, Germans, Armenians and other nations. In just 3 days, hundreds of thousands of people were stuffed in trains and sent away from homes. Rehabilitation became possible only after returning Crimea to Russia. Olga Armyakova reports about the memories, grief, and a new life.
St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse
St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse in Malorichenske began building in January 2004 and on 15 May 2007 it was officially opened. Beautiful St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse is sixty meters tall, stands on the 50 meters cliff above Black Sea and decorated with wonderful frescoes and mosaics.
From gazebo in the form of Flying Dutchman that stands on the edge of the cliff there is perfect view of Crimea southern coast. In addition the complex includes a memorial wall that has nameplates of people who died in the sea. The memorial - a tribute to the memory of sailors, fishermen and travelers who are victims of the sea.
The main icon of St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse is very unusual and has no analogues in the world. This icon of St. Nicholas has knitted knots - no silver or gold as in most of the major icons in Orthodox churches. This icon consisting of half a million knots created by Simferopol actor. He was almost completely paralyzed when doctors advised him to develop hands by knitting. When he made knitted knots for the icon (it took a year and a half to finish the work) almost completely healed. Personally he believed that he was healed by St. Nicholas.
Museum of Accidents on the Waters is located in the basement St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse. Exposition dedicated to the most tragic pages of navigation - disasters on the water with implications for the innumerable victims. The museum is located in 17 rooms (1 000 square meters) each of which tells the story through videos and stands on the most resonant tragedies on the waters of the oceans.
According to statistics maritime disasters - only five to seven percent of deaths are from natural factors - hurricanes, storms, floods. But everything else - the human factor: in the first place - the war, then - booze, negligence, arrogance and disregard important rules.
Construction of St. Nicholas Church-Lighthouse dedicated to the memory of all the beacon of sailors and travelers who ever went to sea and all shipwrecks. One of these major disasters occurred with motor ship Armenia during the Second World War in the Black Sea near the Crimean coast.
On 6th of November 1941 motor ship Armenia left the port of Sevastopol with a military hospital and evacuating residents. According to various estimates on the board were from 5 to 7 thousand people. On 7th of November the ship arrived in Yalta where it took on board several hundred people more. At 8:00 motor ship Armenia left Yalta port escorted by two armed boats and two fighters I-153. At 11 hours and 25 minutes the ship was attacked by a single German aircraft Heinkel He-111. The plane flew from the shore and from a distance of 600 meters dropped two torpedoes. One hit in the nose of motor ship Armenia. After 4 minutes the ship Armenia sank.

New Lows for Vladimir Putin: Russian president takes dive in underwater submersible PR stunt
Vladimir Putin is renowned for performing stunts in front of TV cameras to flaunt his movie star macho man image – but on Tuesday, the Russian leader sunk to a new low. During a visit to Ukraine’s Russian-occupied region of Crimea, he took a dive in an underwater submersible, to look at shipwrecks from the 11th century. In the carefully planned PR act, Putin conversed with stern-looking female controllers at the surface, reporting the depth and visibility of the Black Sea.
