Morocco hosts international fishing exhibition
An international fishing exhibition draws to a close in the Moroccan city of Agadir today (Sunday).
The Halieutis Exhibition aims to promote Morocco's fishing industry and has brought together delegations from 37 countries.
Fishing boats return to port in Agadir.
Morocco is a leading fish producer in Africa with the country's waters home to some of the richest fishing zones in the world.
This is one of 16 Moroccan ports dotted along the Atlantic coastline - six more are found on Morocco's Mediterranean shores.
The fishing industry says it directly supports around 170,000 jobs and contributes around 2.3 percent to the national GDP.
Related industries mean it's a source of income for some 670,000 people.
86,000 tonnes of fish were caught off Agadir last year. But fishermen say it is still difficult to make a profit in this business.
Captain Mostafa Chriaa is one of 15,000 fishermen based at Agadir.
He says operating costs often outstrip the price he's paid for his catch.
A minimum price for fish should be fixed because we face lot of problems. We pay for the fuel, the seamen's salaries and for the equipment, not to mention the dangers we face, he says.
After all that, when we return to port, we are surprised by the low price of fish. It is something that hurts after all the adventures because everything falls apart, he explains.
But the authorities are working to improve the industry.
Agadir is hosting the Halieutis Exhibition, a conference dedicated to the fishing sector.
It brings together 37 countries, around 20 of them from Africa.
300 Moroccan and international exhibitors are showcasing their work.
The exhibition shares its name with the Halieutis Strategy, a government initiative to make the industry more competitive and sustainable.
It's already achieved positive results, including the upgrade of boats and fishing vessels. There has also been investment in infrastructure - such as new fish markets - and improvements in combating illegal and un-declared fishing.
But the Moroccan Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Aziz Akhannouch, says there are still areas for improvement.
We still have a lot to do because we are midway in this plan, he says.
We still need to deploy lots of efforts in the fields of control, traceability and regulations. We also need to facilitate procedures to make private investment more attractive, explains Akhannouch.
The Halieutis Strategy has also had some success marketing Moroccan seafood both nationally and internationally.
And the companies which are attending this conference hope it will be an opportunity to find more customers.
Said Mahboub, General Manager of fishing company Dakhlapes, was at the previous exhibitions in 2011 and 2013.
He credits it with an improvement in trade.
The result is positive for the sector. This plan boosted our sales. While we were selling one or two million Dirhams ($100,000 - $200,000 USD), today we sell five to ten million Dirhams ($500,000 - $1 million USD), he says.
Every two years, we improve our revenues and we meet new clients from Japan, Europe, China and from other nationalities that are making bigger orders, Mahboub says.
The conference has attracted exhibitors from across the world.
Russian, Guinean and Sengalese delegations are marketing their services.
The new European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is here to address the exhibition.
It's Karmenu Vella's first trip outside the European Union since he took up the post.
And he's using the visit to sign an aquaculture agreement between the EU and Morocco.
He hopes it will mean better links between the EU and African countries.
Small scale fishermen hope that means they'll get more for their catch when it's auctioned in the markets.

WOWWW!! Mega Seafood and BBQ CAMEL in Morocco! INSANE Street Food and Seafood Market Tour!
Check out for 3 months free w/ 1 year pack and 49% OFF! ► TAI HAO LE MERCH:
Today we're going DEEP for a full-on SEAFOOD and BBQ Camel Adventure in Essaouira, Morocco! You can follow along as we find MEGA sized seafood like lobster and jumbo crab, and also go DEEP to the Had Dra Sunday farmers market outside of Essaouria to find some INSANE street food, like BBQ camel and a GIANT Moroccan Tajine!
► The BEST VPNs for China:
If you're thinking of coming to Morocco to eat street food, you're going to love it. In one day, you can travel from Marrakech to Essaouira, and try some of the best street food in the world.
We started out our MEGA seafood adventure and BBQ camel tour by first visiting the Sunday farmers market at Had Dra, a short bus ride outside of Essaouira. It was here that we found huge rows of different meats that you can bring to the corner of the market and BBQ up. Right away, I noticed a huge camel head hanging up and different cuts of camel. I knew it had to be done. So we purchased 1 kg of camel and brought it to the BBQ. It was honestly too tough and dry.
After this, we found another GIANT street food to try, the giant chicken tagine. It was so delicious and full of olive, potato, zuchinni, and Moroccan spice.
Next up, we went back to Essaouira in search of some of the best street food and seafood, and found some crazy stuff at the local seafood market. We found a GIANT LOBSTER, around 3.5 KG, and also had some raw seafood like sashimi. I found raw sea urchin, and also raw oyster! The sea urchin, sometimes called Uni, was quite strong! After that, we found a GIANT crab and GIANT LOBSTER at this seafood market. It was such a cool experience! The lobster was quite expensive actually, about $120, but so worth it!
Then we brought the lobster to a grill in the DEEP back streets of essaouira and feasted! It was honestly a little overcooked in some places but in other places it was perfect. I think that's because the lobster was so huge it was hard to cook evenly.
After this, we went to a local Lady's home to try some home cooked moroccan food, the world famous chicken cous cous. Here, it was juicy chicken over top of nutty cous cous with carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, and zuchinni. Moroccan street food is amazing, but the home cooked Moroccan cuisine is even better!
It was an incredible day in Essaouria, Morocco! We found a ton of amazing Moroccan street food and Moroccan home cooked cuisine!
The best part was definitely the JUMBO seafood like the giant lobster and crab, and I must say, the BBQ camel was not my favourite!

MOROCCO Travel // Pt. 2 - Surf Trip from Taghazout to Sidi Ifni
Morocco is a surfer's paradise: perfect swell, quiet beaches, warm water, and sunny weather all year round.
After a few surf sessions around Taghazout we decided to venture to Paradise Valley, a beautiful area for hiking. We made it back to the car just in time before some serious rain showers hit the valley.
We then decided to drive to Sidi Ifni, a hidden gem in the south of Morocco. It is a small fishing village where you can experience traditional Moroccan culture, and again, perfect surf. You won't find a lot of tourists ove here, even though the beaches with natural arches made of sand stone are definitely worth a visit.

Agadir and Essaouira seaside resorts along Morocco's Atlantic coast
Agadir is an important fishing and commercial port. It is also a seaside resort with a long sandy beach.
Essaouira is the most picturesque and relaxed coastal town along Morocco's Atlantic coast. The Medina of Essaouira (formerly Mogador) is a UNESCO World Heritage city. It is an example of a late 18th century fortified town.

Agadir city beauty via photos
So much of sunshine has made Agadir, Morocco, the country's number one tourist destination. The pristine beaches and the sun is the perfect combination for every tourist from colder countries across the globe. Let us go on a tour of the city.
Agadir is considered the regional capital of Morocco and lies to the south of the Atlas Mountains. It is the shortened version of the Berber word “Agadir n Irir” which means, the fortified granary. It is a favorite with holidaymakers due to modern construction and the open spaces. The beaches are serene and favorable for water sports. There are several resorts where you may have leisurely accommodation and experience the superb hospitality of the Moroccans.
What to visit
Kasbah: The Kasbah was built in 1540 by the Saadians to protect the city against the Portuguese. The ocean looks splendid from an height of 240m cliff overlooking the city and the port.
Valley of Birds: It is a zoo located in the heart of the city with a number of birds from around the world.
Suk (market): This is the famous open-air market to the southeast of the city. It is huge and spread over 6 hectares selling interesting merchandise and specializing in spices.
Folk Art Musuem: This museum was built in 1992 and you can catch some interesting and colorful folk arts and traditions of the Souss Valley here.
You can also visit the restaurants around here that serve traditional Moroccan cuisine though there are not many discos, clubs and bars.
Agadir is the best location to head to during winter with a mild climate and hitting the beaches to catch the soft winter sun. The population of Agadir (678,596 approximately) is known for the hospitality and care and you would surely find yourselves wanting to come back to enjoy the city.
Taghazout is a quiet fishing village on the Atlantic coast in Morocco. It’s situated 18 km north of Agadir and 152 km south of Essaouira in the foothills of the western part of the High Atlas range. Tourism is probably the most important source of income of the locals. This quiet village offers the perfect spot for people who want to chill on the beach, swim in the Atlantic Ocean, learn to surf, hike and take day trips to other amazing places.
The locals are mostly Berbers or also called Amazighs.
