VietCamLao Chapter 5 - Vietnam: Ha Long Bay. Cat Ba. (Part 2)
Cat Ba Island.
We are not great fans of organized tours but we decided to give it another try. We got a cruise tour around Cat Ba Archipelago and should admit that it wasn’t that bad idea. Price for the tour 310.000 dong (12.90 €) per person. Chill ride with couple of stops to stretch our legs and kayaking was a nice way to spend a day. Unfortunately at our first stop there were no monkeys on the Monkey island so we just walked around the island and the water wasn’t that inviting for swimming either. One of the advantages of organized tours is that you can meet a lot of nice people there. Of course we took advantage of this possibility!
Cat Ba island is not just hundreds of small islands but inland hiking trips as well. We checked Cat Ba National Park (40.000 dong entrance fee) with it’s biodiversity and beautiful trails. There are different options for hikes, you can even get to the seaside through the park (for that the best bet would be to get organized tour). We climbed one of the picks and enjoyed the view from above.
Kayaking can be really good alternative to organized boat tours so we decided to gain some independence and rented one. Paid 160.000 dong for half a day (after some reflection it seems quite pricey).
We went again to the Monkey Island and had more luck this time. Gang of monkeys was waiting for us. We managed to check closer floating fishing village with its over 4000 inhabitants (barely saw any people there thou), just barking dogs welcomed us there.
The island is relatively small so you can explore it in no time. Basically we explored every corner of it in one day. Our conclusion is that you can skip some of the industrial areas to the west. It’s easy to move around so renting a scooter can be good idea!
After couple of days of delicious seafood hot pots and scenic views we are ready to change scenery again. Ninh Binh this time!
Family Boat Tour ????️ Cát Bà Island in Halong Bay, Vietnam ???????? The Walk Around the World Travel Vlog
Amazing boat tour with family near Cát Bà Island in Halong Bay, Vietnam. Travel vlog recorded on October 23, 2018.
????️
Cát Bà Island is the largest of the 367 islands spanning 260 km2 (100 sq mi) that comprise the Cat Ba Archipelago, which makes up the southeastern edge of Lan Ha Bay in Northern Vietnam. Cat Ba island has a surface area of 285 km2 (110 sq mi) and maintains the dramatic and rugged features of Ha Long Bay.
????️
It is commonly used as an overnight hotel stop on tours to Ha Long Bay run by travel agents from Hanoi. This island belongs to Haiphong city.
????️
Cat Ba is the largest island in the Bay and approximately half of its area is covered by a National Park, which is home to the highly endangered Cat Ba langur. The island has a wide variety of natural ecosystems, both marine and terrestrial, leading to incredibly high rates of biodiversity. Types of natural habitats found on Cat Ba Archipelago include limestone karsts, tropical limestone forests, coral reefs, mangrove and sea grass beds, lagoons, beaches, caves and willow swamp forests.
????️
Cat Ba Island is one of the only populated islands in Ha Long Bay, with roughly 13,000 inhabitants living in six different communes, and 4,000 more inhabitants living on floating fishing villages off the coast. The large majority of the population can be found in Cat Ba town, which is located at the southern tip of the Island (15 km (9 mi) south of the national park) and is the commercial center on the Island. Since 1997, Cat Ba town has grown rapidly and has become a tourist hub for both the Island and greater Ha Long Bay. In addition, almost all areas of the island are deployed with free wifi access points as well as 3.75 generation mobile networks, which can make visiting and working on the island easier.
????️
Cat Ba Historical name called Cac Ba Island means Women’s Island (Cac meaning all and Ba meaning women). Legend has it that many centuries ago, three women of the Tran Dynasty were killed and their bodies floated all the way to Cat Ba Island. Each body washed up on a different beach and all three were found by local fishermen. The residents of Cat Ba built a temple for each woman, and the island soon became known as Cat Ba.
????️
Archaeological evidence suggests that people have lived on Cat Ba Island for almost 6,000 years, with the earliest settlements being found on the southeastern tip of the Island close to the area where Ban Beo harbour sits today. In 1938, a group of French archaeologists discovered human remains belonging to the Cai Beo people of the Ha Long culture, which lived between 4,000 and 6,500 years ago… considered to be perhaps the first population group occupying the northeastern territorial waters of Vietnam… [and] the Cai Beo people may be an intermediary link between the population strata at the end of the Neolithic Age, some 4,000 years ago.
????️
Cat Ba Island has become the adventure-tourism capital of Vietnam, and many of the activities advertised are nature-based. Visitors can kayak and take boat cruises through Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago, hike through the national park, mountain bike around the Island, spend time hiking and swimming on Monkey Island just offshore, tourist can stay at Monkey Island Resort for real relax time on private beach, explore the Island's many caves, swim on Cat Co 1, 2, or 3 (three sandy beaches a short walk from Cat Ba town), or even go rock climbing and deep water soloing on the limestone karsts in Lan Ha Bay. With so many things to do, Cat Ba Island is slowly gaining popularity as an alternative to the crowded Ha Long Bay Town.
????️
Sailing through Ha Long Bay is not only a fascinating experience, but is an adventure as well. Our sail boats take you to remote parts of the Bay and ensure you experience its tranquility away from the crowds of other tourist boats. Setting sail, lounging on the deck and having a quiet beer, while we take you to lagoons, untouched beaches, and amazing caves – what could be better? If needed, our sail boats are equipped with motors to take you anywhere, even on still days.
The calm emerald waters of Ha Long Bay are best explored by kayak. Cat Ba Ventures has a range of tours suited to beginners through to experienced paddlers. This exciting getaway combines the perfect amount of physical activity and relaxation. Exploring rock arch, hidden lagoons, and floating fishing villages, you’ll meet locals and discover a side of mystical this World Heritage Site that you can’t get from a tourist boat.
There are now hundreds of tour agencies in Ha Long Bay and Hanoi that offer everything from budget half or full day trips, to booze cruises, all the way through to five-star luxury multi-day Ha Long Bay tours.

Biggest disappointment | BA BE NP, VIETNAM
Ba Be National Park, 4 September 2016
Biggest disappointment
Day 19
Woke up early in the morning to be on a boat trip to see some spots in the Ba Be National Park. It wasn't a pleasant trip because everything wasn't like I had expected. It is a popular tourist attraction but has got ruined by irresponsibilty and full of trash.
We got back before noon and drove all the way back to Hanoi.

Here are 10 great beaches in Vietnam.
1. Tran Phu Beach is located in Nha Trang. What makes this beach unique is its proximity to other parts of the city. There are several accommodation facilities, seafood restaurants, museums, and souvenir shops around it. You will also enjoy great nightlife there. There is room for swimming, surfing, snorkeling and other fun activities.
2. Ninh Chu Beach is in Ninh Thuan Province and it is not far from Phan Rang Beach another beautiful beach. On Ninh Chu Beach, you can enjoy activities like beach volleyball, sunbathing, and swimming. The beach also has its own attractions like the Da Chong and Du Mountains.
3. Non Nuoc Beach is in Da Nang. Its soft white sand coupled with its super clean water and gentle waves made it one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. You can enjoy activities like surfing, sunbathing, and jet-skiing. You can also indulge in local seafood dishes here.
4. Hon Chong Beach is also in Nha Trang. The most unique feature of this beach is the rock boulders on the beach. Climbing these rocks will give you access to panoramic views of the beach and its surroundings. Remember to take your camera along.
5. Cat Ba Island Beaches are located in Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO site. There are three beaches close to one another - Cat Co 1, 2, and 3. This is why many tour companies offer boat trips to Cat Ba Island.
6. An Bang Beach is located in Hoi An and it offers nice views from neighboring mountains and islets. Apart from all the beach fun, bars, beachfront resorts, and seafood restaurants all await you here. In addition, inexperienced visitors can take advantage of surf and paddleboard lessons that are available on this beach.
7. My Khe Beach is located in Da Nang. American troops were frequent visitors to this beach during the Vietnam War. You can enjoy some jet-skiing, snorkeling, fishing, and sunbathing. It also offers beach front resorts and seafood restaurants. Its best feature is its proximity to other attractions like Phing Nga Caves, Hue Imperial City, and the ancient town of Hoi An.
8. Quy Nhon Beach is in the Binh Dinh Province. The surrounding lush green mountains, soft white sand, and pristine waters are the unique features of this beach. You will definitely want to swim in the water.

In addition, almost all areas of the island are deployed with free wifi access points as well as 3.75 generation mobile networks, which can make visiting and working on the island easier
Today, increases in infrastructure on the Island (including the building of bigger roads, dams to build harbors and to protect Cat Ba town from flooding, consistent electricity being brought to the island (which surprisingly happened as late as 1997) instead of having to rely on a generator, and large ferries and barges, able to transport trucks and cars to the Island from the mainland making daily trips to Cat Ba) made it easier for tourists to visit the Island, leading to a rapid increase in tourism and development in Cat Ba town starting in 2001. Since then, a stop on Cat Ba Island has been included in the itinerary of many Ha Long Bay cruises and a strip of tall, thin, five-storey budget hotels line the seafront, receiving more than 350,000 visitors a year.
Currently, over 150 hotels are listed in Cat Ba Island’s tourist directory pamphlet, from cheap budget hotels to flashier upscale resorts, and construction is underway on many more. Right now, construction is under way on the colossal Cat Ba Amatina, an enormous project that will transform the southern coast of the island. The Amatina compound will be a world-class integrated marina, casino, resort and theme park spanning 171.57 hectares and (VITC) will be able to host almost 6,000 residents at a time. The Amatina will boast seven resorts with over 800 villas, three marinas, one international convention palace, six five-star hotels and one four-star hotel (VITC). The scale of this project is gigantic and will basically create a luxurious mini-city on Cat Ba and will attract tourists from around the world.
Cat Ba Island has become the adventure-tourism capital of Vietnam, and many of the activities advertised are nature-based. Visitors can kayak and take boat cruises through Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago, hike through the national park, mountain bike around the Island, spend time hiking and swimming on Monkey Island just offshore, tourist can stay at Monkey Island Resort for real relax time on private beach, explore the Island's many caves, swim on Cat Co 1, 2, or 3 (three sandy beaches a short walk from Cat Ba town).

Go Fishing in Vietnam - Part 3
Go Fishing in Vietnam - Part 3
Find out about the opportunities for fishing in Vietnam, and how to go about it…
With its long coastline and abundance of rivers and lakes, Vietnam presents many opportunities and settings for different types of fishing. Fish forms a staple of most Vietnamese diets, and as such fishing can be observed anywhere from beaches to mountain lakes and even city canals.
Sea Fishing
It is possible to fish in most of the waters open to the public in Vietnam. Common fish species that can be caught include varieties of snapper and marlin, while sharks and tuna can also be caught when deep-sea fishing.
Fishing by boat
Boat fishing can be organised on the spot with local fishermen, or through organised tours. The best areas for sea fishing are the towns along the south central coastline between Phan Tiet and Quy Nhon. Many tour companies operate out of the resort towns and can organise trips to uninhabited islands off the coast.
River Fishing
Vietnam is famous for the pangasius catfish, known locally as basa. It is quite common in the Mekong Delta, and is also possible to catch by hand in organised “mud-fishing” tours.
Permits and Fees
Unlike most countries, there is no fishing permit or licence required for fishing in Vietnam. However, in certain designated fishing lakes, particularly in the Central Highlands region, there is a fee of around VND100,000 per fishing rod, which is payable to a scout or attendant on site. Additionally, many lakes in and around cities are considered private government property, and fishing is not permitted.
Equipment, Tackle and Bait
As most fishing in Vietnam is carried out using traditional local, handmade equipment, professional fishing shops are rare. However, professional equipment and bait can be found in the major cities.
