Gathering fish samples in Viet Nam
We join fisheries biologists in Viet Nam who work with local fishing communities to gather samples of fish species. Samples are often gathered during routine fishing trips, but the largest variety of fish species can be found in the local markets.
Hoi An & My Son, UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Central Vietnam
Hoi An, founded 2000 years ago, became the port cum commercial capital of the Champa Kingdom during 7th-10th c., and was an important international port in 16th-17th c. before the role was usurped by Da Nang during the French rule. It has been influenced by the Chams, Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, Arabs and French. The Arab traders converted some of the Chams to Muslims, and they migrated to Cambodia, and some even say to the Pattani/Kelantan area of the Malay Peninsula.
My Son is the site of ruins of Hindu temples from the Champa Kingdom (3rd-18th c.). Structures dating from the 7th c. are being preserved and gradually restored.

For more information about our Hoi An tours, visit On The Go Tours:
UNESCO Listed Hoi An in central Vietnam is a historic, former merchant trading post, famed its beautifully preserved Old Town, with distinctive architecture, ancient cobbled streets and picturesque riverside location. The influence of past traders from Japan, China and Europe is evident in Hoi An, whose backstreets are lined with large, attractive merchant houses and pagodas.
Walking through the Old Town is like travelling back in time several centuries. Over 800 historical buildings have been preserved (a handful of which are accessible to the public), there are restrictions on modern development and no cars or motorbikes are allowed.
Today, Hoi An is awash with art stalls and markets, fabulous restaurants and cooking schools, not to mention streets literally lined with tailor-shops (there are said to be over 300), all catering for the town’s thriving tourist trade. Nevertheless Hoi An still manages to retain its traditional character and charm and with pedestrian streets devoid of the usual cacophony and chaos of traffic, Hoi An’s quiet and relaxed pace of life adds to its effortless appeal and this picturesque town is undoubtedly one of Vietnams finest gems. Spending time strolling through the Old Town, exploring the merchant houses and museums, relaxing on the beach or by the river and experiencing rural life in the neighbouring villages is the perfect way to relax and unwind.

HOI AN OLD TOWN, VIETNAM
Canary yellow houses draped in bougainvillea, rickety wooden shops aglow with red silk lanterns, rippling green fields of rice, baskets laden with silver fish: Hội An is a city of Vietnam, on the coast of the East Sea in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam. It is located in Quảng Nam Province and is home to approximately 120,000 inhabitants. Hoi An is redolent of a bygone era, or the 17th and 18th centuries, to be exact. The town features a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and European architecture, and its continued cultural pulse is part of the reason why Hoi An was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. It’s also why tourists come here in droves.
THING TO DEE AND SEE IN HOI AN:
1. Old Town Heritage Ticket - Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage listed town so to enter the old town you must now buy a 120,000 VND (about US$6.00) ticket. Each ticket is valid for 10 days. Ticket allows you to choose 5 sights from a list, including historical houses, Japanese covered bridge, family temples, and some craft centers. 85% of the proceeds are to be reinvested in the old town, the money paying for renovations, upkeep, staff and the families that open their ancient houses for viewing.
2. Tailoring Shop – Hoi An is known for tailoring but there is enticing ready-made wear as well. Nothing declares that you’ve been to Vietnam more than pun-tastic, inside-joke T-shirts sporting “Pho-king”, “iPho” or “Pho Metal Jacket”. Load up on Dong, as there are plenty of things that will catch your eyes when it comes to shopping in Hoi An. How can you resist a tailored shiny zoot suit, shoes and bags? Hoi An has everything you never knew you wanted.
3. Cua Dai Beach – Though Hoi An doesn't really market itself as a beach getaway, there are some pleasant stretches of sand located just a hop away. Hoi An's main beach is Cua Dai, located at the end of predictably named Cua Dai Road. Some of the beach is given over to high-end resorts, but the public section is given over to high-end resorts, but the public section is the first part you see where the road meets the beach.
4. My Son Temple – (40kms from town). ½ day by bus to/from; full day going by bus out there, then returning by boat and stopping at a few pottery and art villages (if you aren’t too fussed with shopping in Hoi An, this is a great option).
5. Boat trips - Hoi An provides ample opportunities to get out onto the water. Enjoying some of the town’s many river ways is a must – hire a boat, go for a paddle or take a tour that incorporates the life aquatic.
6. Half Day Cycling Trip – If you limit yourself to Hoi An’s historic town and the beach, you’re missing out. The town’s Thu Bon River has a vast network of islands and islets perfect for two-wheel exploration.
7. Cooking Class
8. Abseiling and Explore Marble Mountain
9. Hoi An Central Market - bustling Hoi An Central Market is certainly worth a look for its authentic slice of Vietnamese life. The market is busy throughout the day with locals bargaining hard alongside tourists so it’s best to arrive first thing in the morning. The negotiating over fish usually starts around 7am as the fishermen drop their catch off and the market vendors and local buyers dive in to get the best fish. Be warned that it can get very messy, nevertheless it's certainly a sight not to be missed.

Go Fishing in Vietnam - Part 4
Go Fishing in Vietnam - Part 4
Find out about the opportunities for fishing in Vietnam, and how to go about it…
With its long coastline and abundance of rivers and lakes, Vietnam presents many opportunities and settings for different types of fishing. Fish forms a staple of most Vietnamese diets, and as such fishing can be observed anywhere from beaches to mountain lakes and even city canals.
Sea Fishing
It is possible to fish in most of the waters open to the public in Vietnam. Common fish species that can be caught include varieties of snapper and marlin, while sharks and tuna can also be caught when deep-sea fishing.
Fishing by boat
Boat fishing can be organised on the spot with local fishermen, or through organised tours. The best areas for sea fishing are the towns along the south central coastline between Phan Tiet and Quy Nhon. Many tour companies operate out of the resort towns and can organise trips to uninhabited islands off the coast.
River Fishing
Vietnam is famous for the pangasius catfish, known locally as basa. It is quite common in the Mekong Delta, and is also possible to catch by hand in organised “mud-fishing” tours.
Permits and Fees
Unlike most countries, there is no fishing permit or licence required for fishing in Vietnam. However, in certain designated fishing lakes, particularly in the Central Highlands region, there is a fee of around VND100,000 per fishing rod, which is payable to a scout or attendant on site. Additionally, many lakes in and around cities are considered private government property, and fishing is not permitted.
Equipment, Tackle and Bait
As most fishing in Vietnam is carried out using traditional local, handmade equipment, professional fishing shops are rare. However, professional equipment and bait can be found in the major cities.

Overnight Cruise in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Today we sleepover at one of Vietnam's hottest destinations: Ha Long Bay. We take the overnight cruise and sail through its limestone islands. During the day our activities include kayaking, visiting the Thien Cung Cave, rowing by floating houses, and Vietnamese cooking lessons. In the evening we wine and dine, then go squid-fishing. No catch, but it's a way to mingle with other passengers! Watch the video to see the action unfold :)

HUE TO HOI AN - Most Epic Way to Travel Vietnam!

OK travel bugs, this was INSANE. I honestly thought we were going by motorbike and was ready for the occasion. Turns out they had the jeep available that day and we drove it along the Vietnam coastline. BREATHTAKING! This was definitely one of those “wow, I can’t believe I did that” travel moments.
While you can take a shuttle bus or the train, both those options don’t allow you to see Vietnam’s amazing coastline views. Consider taking a private motorbike, jeep, or car option to get the most out of your time!
Here’s some destinations we visited during the drive from Hue to Hoi An:
-Fishing village
-Hai Van Pass is a long mountainous stretch of road in Central Vietnam that juts into the sea. An incredibly beautiful path to ride on on motorbike or…jeep!
-My Khe Beach, R & R Beach is a beach in Danang, a white sandy 20-mile stretch!
-Marble Mountain is a cluster of limestone hills, caves, tunnels, and temples. A seriously fascinating site to visit in Vietnam!
-Danang is the largest city in Vietnam in terms of population - wow!
-Hoi An Ancient City
I flew into Hue instead of Danang because it was cheaper, so I had to travel down South to get to Hoi An :) Hope that helps with navigation!
If you've made it this far...give the video a big thumbs up! You're epicly awesome.

Hoi An Cycling, Kayaking, Bamboo Workshop and Traditional Bingo - Travel Vietnam
Continuing our collaboration with Go Explore, we headed back to Hoi An, for a week of fun and filming.
In this video we have just put together a few snippets and highlights that we were able to grab while taking part in the activities.
There was a cycling tour through the farming areas of Hoi An, stopping along the way for local drinks and treats, as well as trying our hand at some farming.
Then there was a kayaking tour that was amazing and took us through some of the local fishing areas. We also visited Taboo, which makes everything from lamp shades to furniture and even bicycles out of bamboo. They even had a bamboo gold buggy!
One night we even got to take part in a round or two of Vietnams version of bingo, haha.
It was a busy but fun week that just flew by too quick!
We'd love it if you liked and shared this video, so others who haven't yet heard of us, also get a chance to share in the experience. Thanks :)

Where to Go by Mulle -
We are Leon and Tash, a New Zealand vlogging couple who set off on an amazing Vietnam adventure as fulltime travellers, backpacking Vietnam. But we weren't going to travel to Vietnam for one of those ordinary backpacking Vietnam trips you hear about everybody doing, where they go for a couple off weeks and check out the beaches or maybe riding through Vietnam at such a crazy pace that they never get off the beaten track. No we want more than that.
Our Vietnam adventures start with learning the way of the locals, taking just enough time to figure out how things work, discover what the Must see places in Vietnam are and more importantly where Vietnam's hidden gems are...
To do this, we moved to Danang Vietnam. The plan was to spend 3 months living in Da Nang, meeting and learning from locals about the culture, the amazing food, their way of living and what places they would recommend to travel in Vietnam.
And because Danang is in the middle of the country, we hoped we might meet other tourists or expats who were having their own Vietnam travel adventure or were at the halfway point of motorcycle riding through Vietnam and hear from them, what places they thought we must visit in Vietnam. Also, as new travel vloggers, having a base there meant we could try things like doing Da Nang Vietnam travel vlog or creating a Danang Vietnam travel guide, before also taking on the stresses of fulltime travel.
Then in month 4, that's when the real Vietnam adventure begins. With our new list of must see places, we will head to Saigon and buy a couple of motorbikes. to start our Vietnam road trip!
Motorcycle riding through Vietnam seems like one of the most hectic, crazy and chaotic things anyone could do, but we can't wait!! And we wont be following a simple South to North / Saigon to Hanoi route, we plan on doing more like a figure 8, so that our travel in Vietnam will cover both the inland and coastal areas of this amazing country.
So can we still say we are backpacking Vietnam? Or should we be telling people our travel in Vietnam is a motorcycle trip through Vietnam? We're not sure, but what we do know is, our Vietnam road trip is going to cover over 6000km's from Saigon right up to the famous waterfalls of Ban Gioc near Cao Bang, round the northern point of the Ha Giang loop and everything else we can access in between.
So we hope you'll join us, the New Zealand vlogging couple, on our Vietnam adventure by clicking subscribe to join the Tribe and experience our travel in Vietnam..
Basket Boating Adventure in Hoi An, Vietnam || The Purple Gypsy
I was lucky enough to visit Hoi An last month. I went on an Eco Tour and got up to many exciting things. I rode a Water Buffalo, cycled the Hoi An country side and went basket boating through the Water Coconut Forests.
I hope you enjoy the video I put together.
