Utrecht and Rosario's Shipwrecks
Utrecht and Nossa Senhora do Rosário Shipwrecks
The shipwrecks of Utrecht and Nossa Senhora do Rosario was an episode of the Luso-Dutch struggle for the possession of Brazil. In 1646, the Portuguese fleet was attacked by a Dutch squadron at Baia de Todos os Santos, Salvador (Brazil). During the battle the Rosario, the ship of the Portuguese fleet, was flanked by Huys Nassau and Utrecht of the Dutch fleet. Given the situation, the Captain of Rosario fired in the stocks of gunpowder, which caused a huge explosion and resulted in the sinking of the Rosario and Utrecht. In this event, only 26 men survived. The Nassau Huys suffered significant damage and ended up stranded on the island of Itaparica located about 3 miles from shipwrecks.
In 1982 these wrecks were found by Walter Andrade. Between 1986 and 1988 archaeological studies were made. Among the findings highlight the largest collection ever found in tin utensils, some of daily use and other of a surgical procedures.
Nowadays it is possible to dive these wrecks through local dive companies. The depth is 20 meters, the water temperature varies between 24 and 29o C. In summer the visibility can reach more than 20 meters.

Snorkeling at Rio da Prata # 253 Brazil
Type: Nature/ Wildlife Areas, Aquariums
Owner description: The ecotourism operation at Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata follows the principles for sustainability. The tour is developed within a RPPN -- Private Reserve of Natural Heritage. Elected the Best Tourist Attraction of Brazil in 2008 and 2009 by readers of Brazil's most respected Travel Guide -- Guia 4 Rodas, the ranch also received awards for its environmental projects and social responsibility.
The marvelous Rio da Prata, 56km south of Bonito, includes a trek through rainforest and some great snorkeling. The latter involves a 3km float downstream along the Rio Olha d'Agua, amazingly crystal clear and full of fish; and Rio da Prata, a little foggier but still fantastic for viewing massive pacu and big, scary dourado.
If you only do one thing in Bonito, you could do a lot worse than taking the morning to the visit the Rio da Prata in Bonito. After a short trek through some woodland, which in itself is pleasant enough to merit a visit and contains one of the most picturesque waterfalls you're ever likely to see, you'll be treated to a 3km float down the crystal clear waters of the Rio Olha d'Agua and the Rio da Prata.
Between them they contain between them 55 colourful species of fish but even without the wildlife the underwater landscape is pretty stunning. It's amazing how clear the river is; due to natural filtration provided by limestone it's as clear as any artificial swimming pool. Possibly even clearer, in fact, as the high quality of sunlight really helps to highlight the colours and contrasts beneath the surface. Forget everything else, I could have spent hours just watching the rainbows ripple over the riverbed as I drifted peacefully along.
The tour starts with a trail through the gallery forest of the Rio da Prata (Prata river). Along the way, amidst the rich flora, it is possible to observe exotic birds, monkeys, tapir and other wild animals.
The trail leads to the main spring of Olho d'Água River where the snorkeling tour begins and where you will experience the sensation of floating in an immense aquarium of crystalline waters.
You will float downstream until the meeting point at the end of the tour while you enjoy the sight of dozens of different species of fish and aquatic plants...
To ensure quality, safety and respect for nature, the groups are limited to a maximum of nine visitors and are always accompanied by a specialized, local guide. The tour lasts approximately 3 hous and 30 minutes.

VAMPIRE FISH PAYARA hydrolycus scomberoides Feding Time - RMFK
hydrolycus scomberoides ''Cuvier, 1819'' (Vampire Tetra)
Matt Clarke on Hydrolycus scomberoides, one of the toothiest of all South American fishes.
Common name: Payara
Scientific name: Hydrolycus scomberoides (Cuvier, 1819)
Origin: Fairly widespread in South America. Museum specimens have been recorded from Brazil, Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela.
Size: This species is a fearsome predator that reaches up to 120cm/48 in length in the wild.
Diet: This fish has enormous fang-like teeth, designed for grabbing hold of fish. Small specimens might take shrimps, too, but adults are exclusively piscivorous. As you would expect with a specialised species like this, feeding these fish is challenging and newly imported fish take time to be weaned onto dead fish. Adults have teeth that make the canines of my retreiver look small, and could probably remove a limb.
Water: Found over a wide area, so probably relatively adaptable. Ideally soft, acidic or neutral water would be best, but these were doing well in alkaline water.
Aquarium: Small specimens appreciate shelter and live in groups and hang head down waiting for prey fish to pass. Presumably there's also a biological reason for this posture, and perhaps they feed on benthic fishes or shrimps while juvenile. Little is known about keeping the adult fish, but it's likely that they will need to be kept singly, as they have the potentially to swallow prey of very large sizes. The mouth opens like that of an arowana. According to opefe.com, can reach 40cm/15 in two years but few have been successful in keeping the fish alive past this point. Presumably space and feeding become an issue. As a result, this isn't a species to be recommended unless you're very experienced and can provide a truly vast aquarium. We'd recommend that you avoid this species and other Hydrolycus.
Notes: This toothy fish is a member of the Characiniformes family Cynodontidae. There are three other species in the genus (H. pectoralis is a synonym of H. scomberoides), but these have rarely been mentioned in aquarium literature before. H. armatus (about 60cm/24) is the oldest species, and was described in 1841 by Jardine and Schomburgk. H. wallacei and H. tatauaia were described in 1999 by Toledo-Piza, Menezes and dos Santos.
Identification: H. scomberoides is relatively easy to identify among the four fish in the genus, as it's the only one with a black spot at the base of the pectoral fin, apart from H. tatauaia which has a black spot and a black line running vertically with the operculum. H. wallacei, from the Rio Negro, reaches about 30cm/12 and is blackish in colour.
Availability: This species is rarely seen on sale in the shops. These ones were imported by Tom Halvorsen Ltd and were on sale at Wharf Aquatics in Nottinghamshire.
