Driving Downtown - Columbia - USA
Driving Downtown - Columbia South Carolina USA - Season 1 Episode 5.
Starting Point: Main St
Highlights include Main St - Sumter St (USC) - Assembly St - Gervais St - Lady St - Washington St - Hampton St - Taylor St - Blanding St.
Columbia is the capital of and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, with a population of 129,272 as of the 2010 United States Census. As of July 1, 2013, the city's population was estimated to be 133,358 (U.S. Census Bureau, July 2014 release). The name Columbia was a poetic term used for the United States, originating from the name of Christopher Columbus. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship and largest university, and is also the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. In 1860, the city was the location of the South Carolina Secession Convention, which marked the departure of the first state from the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.
Downtown revitalization
The city of Columbia has recently accomplished a number of urban redevelopment projects and has several more planned.[27] The historic Congaree Vista, a 1,200-acre (5 km2) district running from the central business district toward the Congaree river, features a number of historic buildings that have been rehabilitated since its revitalization begun in the late 1980s. Of note is the adaptive reuse of the Confederate Printing Plant on Gervais and Huger, used to print Confederate bills during the American Civil War. The city cooperated with Publix grocery stores to preserve the look. This won Columbia an award from the International Downtown Association.[28] The Vista district is also where the region's convention center and anchor Hilton hotel with a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse restaurant are located. Other notable developments under construction and recently completed include high-end condos and townhomes, hotels, and mixed-use structures.
The older buildings lining the Vista's main drag, Gervais, now house art galleries, restaurants, unique shops, and professional office space. Near the end of Gervais is the South Carolina State Museum and the EdVenture Children's Museum. Private student housing and some residential projects are going up nearby; the CanalSide development[29] at the site of the old Central Correctional Institution, is the most high profile. At full build-out, the development will have 750 residential units and provides access to Columbia's waterfront. Lady Street between Huger and Assembly streets in the Vista and the Five Points neighborhood have undergone beautification projects, which mainly consisted of replacing curbs and gutters, and adding brick-paved sidewalks and angled parking.
Economy
Columbia enjoys a diversified economy, with the major employers in the area being South Carolina state government, the Palmetto Health hospital system, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Palmetto GBA, and the University of South Carolina. The corporate headquarters of Fortune 1000 energy company, SCANA, are located in the Columbia suburb of Cayce. Other major employers in the Columbia area include Computer Sciences Corporation, Fort Jackson, the U.S. Army's largest and most active initial entry training installation,[25] Richland School District One, Humana/TriCare, and the United Parcel Service, which operates its Southeastern Regional Hub at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Major manufacturers such as Square D, CMC Steel, Spirax Sarco, Michelin, International Paper, Pirelli Cables, Honeywell, Westinghouse Electric, Harsco Track Tech, Trane, Intertape Polymer Group, Union Switch & Signal, FN Herstal, Solectron, and Bose Technology have facilities in the Columbia area. There are over 70 foreign affiliated companies and fourteen Fortune 500 companies in the region. The gross domestic product (GDP) of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area as of 2010 was $31.97 billion, the highest among MSAs in the state.[26]

5 BIG Changes to US Immigration in 2020 You Need to Know About
In this week's live video, immigration attorney, Andres Mejer, discusses the 5 big changes to immigration policy in the United States that everyone should know about.
We all know it is getting harder and harder for those who want to immigrate to the United States. Approvals for petitions are taking longer. Fees are increasing. Good moral character and public charge are being weighed more heavily. Some things are being said they will change and the immigration legal community is still trying to figure out what the change will be. In this video, Andres talks about all of this and more.
#1 Fee Increases - costs are skyrocketing for many immigration applications. Andres discusses what you can expect and why this is happening. (:33) Andres also shares what is happening more and more with fee waivers (2:01)
#2 Citizenship Test Changes - Andres explains how the test will get harder and that approvals will go down (2:36)
Increased Citizenship Petition Denials - Andres talks about the things that USCIS seems to be using to make denials for citizenship increase. (4:26) He shares how USCIS is making the qualifications much more strict. He also explains what the look back period is and how it is applied based on how you obtained your green card.
Because of these changes, if you were EVER arrested, it is imperative that you speak to a qualified immigration attorney BEFORE submitting your citizenship application.
#3 Electronic Filing - You can file more forms electronically. (14:09) Andres explains why this isn't something to get excited about yet.
#4 Public Charge - This has been in immigration policy for over a century. The big change is that this is now defined in the law. Andres talks about what it is and how it applies to you when applying for an immigration benefit. (16:53)
#5 Asylum Obstacles - this one is HUGE. Andres explains what is being done to almost make it impossible for asylum seekers to be in the US and work.(19:33) The US wants to be able to deny asylum not just for a conviction of a crime but a mere suspicion of having committed a crime. If you have a conviction for any offense with a POSSIBLE jail sentence of more than one year, you could be denied asylum. (21:59) These are really big changes.
If you or a loved one is applying for any immigration benefits in 2020 we STRONGLY suggest you watch (and share) this video. If you need an attorney for your immigration case, we are here to help. We offer NO COST consultations for those who qualify and have payment plans. Call our office and speak to our staff today to see how we can help you with your immigration journey.

How to Turn Left At An Intersection :: Step-by-step Instructions
To pass a road test, you must know how to turn left at an intersection - watch the video. Get Your ROAD TEST CHECKLIST: SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ►
#turningleftatanintersection #smartdrivetest #passfirsttime
STEPS FOR TURNING LEFT AT AN INTERSECTION
1) Locate the turn: is it legal?
2) Check centre mirror to ensure it's safe to slow. Shoulder check, and activate left signal approximately 1/2 block from turn;
3) Scan the intersection ahead for traffic controls (signs, lights, road markings) and road users.
4) Move completely into left turning lane as soon as it starts;
5) Stop at the correct stopping position (STOP line or behind traffic so you can see tires of car in front making clear contact with pavement);
6) If you're the last vehicle in line, continue to scan traffic to rear;
7) When traffic light changes to green, move up so front steer tires are on front crosswalk line;
8) When traffic gap appears move forward into the intersection to meet gap. Start turning when you are in line with edge of road;
9) Check mirror and shoulder check immediately before turning. Watch cross-street for pedestrians crossing;
10) Turn into the left lane;
11) Speed for left turn should be 12-20mph (20-30kph) depending on size of intersection;
12) When vehicle straightens after completing turn, change lanes back to right lane.
In this video on how to do left hand turns for the purposes of a road test, I incorporated feedback for lydia2010tion & LeStatisticien. I have focused the camera on the left side of the intersection to provide a better angle. And more commentary is provided as well.
And as suggested by LeStatisticien, I've placed a marker on the hood so that viewers can see the direction of travel of the vehicle.
Finally, this video is a bit longer, and shows left hand turns at the same intersections 2 or 3 times; the reason for that is because traffic is dynamic. In other words, traffic is always changing. And the different vehicle and road user combinations in the intersection as well as the actions of driver can make the same intersection a very different challenge.
Left Turn
So completely into the turning lane as soon as the turning lane starts. The light is green. There's a huge truck, as you can see, we stop with the front tires on the front crosswalk line. Now the other thing I'm going to need to do is I'm going to do to do a little jig job here. So I moved out to the left and then I straightened my wheels out again. If I'm rear-ended from the rear... shoulder check - into the inside lane. Immediately put on my right hand signal. I don't want to change lanes over the railway crossing, until I come over the railway crossing, then I change lanes back to the right immediately when I make a left hand turn.
Jig-Jog So That You Can See
Now as I was saying there, you saw that in the video that I had to do that little jig-jog there to get... I do that little jog there so that I could see past the truck that was blocking my view. And again you want to bring the vehicle back to straight because if you are rear-ended from the rear you're not going to be driven out into the oncoming traffic. Rather you're going to be pushed straightforward. So instead of having two crashes, you're only going to have one crash from the rear. And that is one of the dangers of turning left is that you could potentially be rear-ended and pushed out into oncoming traffic, which is especially dangerous if it you have passengers in the vehicle because the vehicle is going to strike the passenger side of the vehicle.
And it is unlikely your passengers going to live, especially if you're on a highway at high speeds. But always, always when you're turning left and waiting to turn left keep your wheels straight...
Good luck on your road test!!

My Luxurious Train Ride On The Rocky Mountaineer
What's better than flying first class? This luxury train service in the Pacific Northwest known as the Rocky Mountaineer. Seems to me like it must be the highest level of service you'd find on a train in North America!
In this video, I take you along with me and my wife for a slightly more than five hour trip from Seattle, Washington to Vancouver, British Columbia in a special rail car that far exceeds the level of service and pampering you'd get on Amtrak.
We boarded at the King Street station in Seattle and headed north on a beautiful route along Puget Sound. The tracks ran right along the water for hours! The views were fantastic and the food, drinks, and level of service provided to the passengers was, too!
This Seattle-Vancouver journey is known as the Coastal Passage, and it's a good alternative for people that can't afford the ultimate Rocky Mountaineer experience: the 2-day journey from Vancouver to Banff.
Some of the points of interest in the video include the Seattle Space Needle, Fairhaven, Bellingham, Surrey, Crescent Beach, and the border between Canada and the United States.
Because we booked the Gold Leaf service rather than the less expensive Silver Leaf class, we rode in a 2-level rail car with a dining room on the bottom level and a glass-domed viewing area on the upper level.
I'll be riding the Rocky Mountaineer again in July of 2020, following an Alaska cruise. If you think you might be interested in coming along with me for that vacation, take a look at for details.
