Remembrance Day, Barrie, 2019
Yesterday, November 11, 2019, was Remembrance Day, when we pay homage to those who were lost during combat protecting the security and ideals of Canada, and also those who came home as honoured veterans.
As time rolls on, fewer and fewer World War Two veterans now attend at these events, but there is never a shortage of veterans from the many peacekeeper missions our country has undertaken since the Korean conflict of the 1950s through to Afganistan.
May we never forget.
Last year we covered the entire ceremony. That video can be found at

Barrie Canada Day Promenade and Air Show, 2019
Our Five Points Media location crew of Producer John Ironside and Production Associate Tiffany Scott couldn’t put their feet up for the entirety of the long Canada Day weekend, as they joined forces to record some shots from the annual Promenade Days and then much of the Barrie Air Show.
While downtown we caught a few words from MPP Andrea Khanjin, a one-time child refugee from Russia, and also from City Councillor Natalie Harriswho as a first responder experienced mental health issues that led to addiction. Both praised our country and how it is only in Canada that they could be now where they are.
The airshow, featuring both an F-18 acrobatics team and the Snowbirds, thrilled thousands who took in the perfect day on the shores of Kempenfelt Bay.
Our community programming at Five Points Media is made possible by support from local businesses and organizations.

Holiday with a Hero, 2020
The holiday season may be over, but we know of at least seventy-five local kids who will hold memories forever that simply could not have been created without a very large group of true heroes.
A few weeks before Christmas, and very early in the morning, dozens of children started arriving at the Walmart Barrie North. Many of these children had come from homes where the families were struggling in various ways. Some were selected because, due to no fault of their own, the kids had been exposed to police and emergency services through a negative event. Part of the mission today was to let these children see police, soldiers, paramedics, firefighters, and other first responder professionals in a more factual positive light.
Special recognition goes out to:

SaveStation donated by Kiwanis Club of Barrie to Meridian Place
Sudden Cardiac Arrests happen in Canada on average every 13 minutes. The good news is that there is over a 75% survival rate when an AED (defibrillator) is used within the first 10 minutes. For this reason, public-access defibrillators that anyone can use are the difference to save a life.
SaveStation takes this concept a step further by standardizing the cabinet design and offering indoor/outdoor solutions that can be installed in highly accessible locations.
That was the message from SaveStation this morning that they relayed at Meridian Place in Barrie, where the Kiwanis Club Of Barrie was donating an outdoor defibrilator unit to the city's core.

A Day As A Cadet
Sometimes when you throw a young person in with the sharks they come out not only holding their own but surprising the 'teacher' who chucked them in. That is the case with this new video by our Padawan Tiffany Scott, who far exceeded the expectations of her teacher, Five Points Media Producer, John Ironside.
This is not Tiffany's first solo venture since joining our team, but it is the first that she did entirely on her own. In her other video, about foster dog Nikki looking for a home, the young documentary producer in training was accompanied by her teacher and left more or less to her own devices with guidance. In this situation, she was dropped off at Camp Blackdown, CFB Borden and asked to call for her ride home when she was done. She shot every frame, and she cut this together all on her own, with only minor training in colour correction which takes anyone a while to understand.
We think the 23-year-old did a great job. If you think likewise, please make a comment to encourage her future work.
Thank you to Blackdown Cadets, the officers, personnel, instructors, and support staff who helped Tiffany to make this very good short video about the benefits and training of the Canadian Armed Forces Cadets Canada.

Hip Hop Appreciation Week began in 1998 and runs every third week in May as a time to acknowledge and appreciate the actual existence of Hip Hop itself. Instead of wondering what happened to “real Hip Hop,” Hip Hop Appreciation Week is an opportunity to answer that question; to become a supporter of Hip Hop’s original culture, and not just an exploiter of Hip Hop’s original arts. Barrie Mothers Call For Police to Investigate Rental Fraud, ‘Landlord’ Arrested
Sometimes stories cross our desk that are frankly impossible to believe.
Can you get much lower than defrauding a young single mother who wants only to find a home for their children, not just once but potentially dozens of times? This seems to be the case in this local Barrie story of alleged rental fraud, the claims of which have been made by as many as twenty local women.
Last week we saw a post by Barrie hair stylist Melissa Ferguson who went on Facebook Live to expose a pattern of fairly obvious deception that had been undertaken by a Barrie woman who claimed to own a home that we are told she wanted to rent specifically to single mothers fleeing abuse.
However, according to her own texts and Facebook Messages, once a lease was signed and money was paid, this ‘landlord’ started playing tenant shuffle, refusing to allow any of those she had taken money from to move into the house. She also appears to have established a pattern of taking money from one new ‘tenant’ to partially pay back another, often when threatened with police intervention. We are also told that in several cases, she just kept the first and last months rent with no offer to refund anything.
We offered to tell the story, and Barrie mothers Shay McCleary, and Kendall MacPherson agreed to meet with us at Beauty & Babes, a hair salon owned by Ferguson. We learned that all three had filed statements with the Barrie Police Services, and that they were happy to answer our questions and provide evidence of their claims. The ‘landlord’ has not responded to our attempts to communicate.
To the best of our knowledge, despite being contacted, no other Barrie media has reported in any depth about this story.
Concern was expressed by one of the victims of this apparent fraud regarding the speed at which the Barrie Police Services responded to the multiple but unconnected allegations. However, we have not ascertained the official side of the story. Regardless, we are advised that the ‘landlord’ has been arrested and charged after more than a dozen women went to police after learning that they were part of what appears to have been a massive scheme to defraud that was evidently targeted at single mothers.
None of us can do anything about the alleged fraud. That is now in the hands of the police and our criminal justice system. We can, however, help these mothers and their children to find homes.
Many people in Barrie have empty mother-in-law suites or vacant rooms left by kids who have moved on with their lives. Even on a temporary basis, please consider renting space to any of the dozen or more women and children who have reported being defrauded.
If you can do so, please consider helping them. Comments sent to us directly will be forwarded to the women we interviewed.
Please help if you can. If you can't help directly, then please share this video so others can learn about this story and possibly help the mothers and children in need.
Winter is coming, and nobody wants to see them on the street or mothers returning to bad situations just to provide a home for their children. These women did nothing wrong, and they need our help.
Our community programming at Five Points Media is made possible by support from local businesses and organizations.
