Plastic Ocean
United Nations - Plastic - both a wonderful invention and a scourge on our planet. Over 300 million tons will be produced this year.
Most is never recycled and remains on our land and in our seas for ever. Our story shows the damage to all creatures who depend on the ocean for their food – from birds… to us.

Why Do Rivers Have Deltas?
Where rivers meet the ocean, coastlines tend to bend either inward or outward, creating estuaries and deltas. But how do they get those shapes?
A huge thank-you to the following organizations, all working toward sustainable deltas, for sponsoring this video: the Belmont Forum, the Sustainable Deltas Initiative, the National Center for Earth-Surface Dynamics, the St Anthony Falls Laboratory of the University of Minnesota, and the DELTAS project. These organizations study deltas around the world, in particular how they’re threatened by human activities such as building dams, channelizing rivers, and climate change-induced sea-level rise. If we don’t pay attention, we might lose the landform that allowed us to become civilized in the first place.

Want to learn more about the topic in this week’s video? Here are some keywords/phrases to get your googling started:
– delta: the piled-up sediment (typically triangular, or greek-letter-delta-shaped) deposited by a river as it flows into a larger body of water
– estuary: a partially enclosed body of brackish (part salt, part fresh) water that connects one or more ocean-bound streams/rivers to the open sea. Geologists classify estuaries into four basic types (bar-built, coastal plain/drowned river, tectonic, and fjord), based on the geologic processes that formed them.
– ice age: this is a term that geologists use a little differently than non-scientists. Geologically speaking, an ice age is a fairly long period (~100-300 million years) of relatively cold temperatures on Earth. Within these long periods of time, the climate warms and cools lots of times, causing the ice sheets to retreat and advance; geologists refer to the colder time intervals as glacials and the warmer periods as interglacials. We are currently in an interglacial phase (that started ~15,000 years ago) of an ice age that started ~2.6 million years ago, but because that's kind of complicated, we just say the end of the last ice age when what we really mean is the end of the last 'glacial' cycle of the current ice age.
– marine transgression / marine regression: on the surface, these are just fancy ways of talking about sea level going up and down. But for geologists, transgression and regression are more useful, because land sometimes goes up and down too. For example, if movement along a tectonic fault causes part of the coast to drop below sea level, it might get flooded, but it wouldn't be accurate to attribute the flooding to sea level rise. So geologists describe the situation as marine transgression instead. These terms comes in handy when we're talking about deltas and estuaries: deltas are formed by marine regression, and estuaries by marine transgression.

California hotels aim to catch the eco-tourism wave
(29 Aug 2019) LEAD IN:
A growing number of hotels in Santa Monica are looking at ways to be greener.
New rules introduced this summer eliminate plastic food containers, while the Pacific Ocean city is working hard at sustainability.
STORY-LINE:
California basks in its title: the Golden State, but it's also known for being ahead of the curve on green policies introducing a clean air act in the 1970s and later, targets for greenhouse gases.
Sustainability is the buzzword here in the city of Santa Monica.
The beachside tourist destination perched on the Pacific Ocean has its own Sustainability Authority Office.
It's Clean Beaches Initiative is considered a role model for many other cities and is aimed at cleaning up the Pacific Ocean.
Over the years, there have been initiatives like the Santa Monica Urban Runoff Recycling Facility (SMURRF). This is a water recycling plant that treats dry weather urban runoff to remove pollutants including sediment, oil and grease.
Pier storm drain reconstruction, and bird deterrent installations also keep polluted runoff out of Santa Monica Bay.
The city recaptures and recycles storm runoff for secondary, non drinking use throughout the city.
Under this beach parking lot, sits the new massive 1.6 billion gallon underground storage tank and pipe system, designed to collect rainwater from Santa Monica's downtown area and keep the dirty water from flowing back into the ocean.
Sustainability Authority leaders say the initiative is an example of investing in innovative infrastructure that can make a difference.
A big trend in tourism here is eco-tourism with visitors searching out eco-friendly hotels to stay at during their travels.
Several hotels in Santa Monica are committed to sustainable city regulations and eco-tourism is seen as a strong dollar earner.
Garrett Wong, Senior Sustainabilty Analyst for Santa Monica says the city is committed to water self-sufficiency, zero waste, and carbon neutrality.
Santa Monica, we're a coastal community and we've been leading on sustainability policy for over 25 years. We are one of the first communities in the world to have a sustainable city plan. What that plan did was basically establish environmental metrics for the city to measure itself against and it gave us targets for which we should strive to achieve so reducing our waste, reducing our water use and making sure that we are using energy in the right way says Wong.
He adds that Santa Monica is more than three quarters of the way to self sufficiency with water right now.
Water sustainablily is crucial to the city which has to import most of its water.
The city plans to be water self sufficient by 2023, a zero waste community by 2030, and plans to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 or sooner, says Wong.
The Shore Hotel has won a number of awards for its focus on sustainability.
The hotel is a favourite facing the beach on a prime block.
Managers here are proud of what they've dubbed the hotel's Seven Years of Sustainability since opening in 2011.
It holds a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) showing its saved water, energy and resources.
The hotel has saved 31 million watts of energy through the use of energy efficient LED light bulbs.
Three quarters of its construction materials were recycled of salvaged including the metals, concrete and wood.
What's more The Shore pre-empted city regulations by changing its to-go food plastic ware to follow new regulations.
This hotel was built in 1939.

The Coming War on China is John Pilger's 60th film for ITV. Pilger reveals what the news doesn't: That the world's greatest military power, the United States, and the world's second economic power, China, both nuclear-armed, are on the road to the third world war. Pilger's film is a warning and an inspiring story of resistance.
