FJORD & BAELT

FJORD & BÆLT is an open research lab in Kerteminde, Denmark, that investigates the local marine ecosystems of the Great Belt. For the underwater tunnel exhibition developed by Art+Com Studios, we created a multichannel soundscape composition reflecting on the natural forces that influence underwater life. The structure of our composition is based on environmental data recorded close to the research station in 2016. Among the measured variables are moon phase, sun duration, moon duration, sea level pressure, temperature and humidity. For the piece we translated those variables into musical structures and forms – a musical score. Each data variable is represented through a distinctive musical timbre. Original recordings from the research station provide the source material for those timbres, thus the engine drone of a passing ferry becomes a musical bordun, the clicking sounds of porpoises become a rich sonic texture. The length of the composition is four hours. In this time, it passes through all recorded data of 2016 and sonifies the entire year in an acoustic time lapse. A day lasts 40 seconds, a month 20 minutes. In addition to the main composition for the underwater tunnel, we also crafted soundscape compositions for other parts of the exhibition, serving as prelude, interlude and epilogue.
