Northwoods Fun on the Flambeau River
Wisconsin is full of hidden gems and there’s one river in Northwestern Wisconsin that winds through untouched wilderness and offers unique Northwoods adventures, the Flambeau River. Join hosts Mariah Haberman and Jake Zimmerman as they begin their journey on the North and South Forks in Price County. After a little fishing and a quick stop at Smith Lake County Park, the pair continues their trek down the river through Sawyer County where Mariah explores the renowned Winter Greenhouse and Jake attempts target-shooting from a canoe. Next, the duo stop off in Ladysmith to try Stand-Up Paddle Boarding and enjoy Ladysmith Mardi Gras festivities before ending their journey at the Flambeau River State Forest on the roaring rapids of the infamous Slough Gundy.
Flambeau River State Forest Conner's Lake To Lake of the Pines June 19, 2018
Near Winter Wisconsin
From Conner's Lake campground to Lake of the Pines Campground.
Both lakes are beautiful! The section between the lakes is interesting because of its plant life.
Great 4 hour (?) trip. Nice boat landing on Lake of the Pines for a lunch.

Dad in the Flambeau River State Forest
Take a gentle stroll through the beauty of the Flambeau River State Forest in northern Wisconsin. This short film is a tribute to my Dad, my original mentor in all things wild. He makes a couple of appearances in the film as he accompanies me on breeding bird surveys in a mosaic of wet mesic forest back in 2012. In my world, this video is a treasure. Birds appearing in the film are the Northern Parula and the Blackburnian Warbler, both Neotropical migrants. The birds of the background chorus include the gentle, liquid trills of the Winter Wren, the buzzy bee-bee-bee-oh-BEE of the Black-throated Green Warbler, the high and thin song of the Blackburnian Warbler, the Teacher-Teacher-Teacher of the Ovenbird, the rich and liquid warbling of the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, the subtle and dry Che-bek of the Least Flycatcher, and the slow and metered squeaking of the Red-eyed Vireo. The star of the show, the Northern Parula was remarkably tame and allowed my Dad and me to observe him sing and forage at close range for nearly twenty minutes. What a gift!
