Flamingo Gardens is a 60-acre, not-for-profit wildlife sanctuary, aviary, and botanical garden located just west of Fort Lauderdale, Florida at 3750 South Flamingo Road, Davie, Florida, United States.
Flamingo Gardens is a 60 acre Botanical Garden and Everglade Wildlife Sanctuary. The Flamingo Gardens botanical gardens in Fort Lauderdale, (Davie) Florida, features over 3000 species of rare & exotic, tropical, subtropical, and native plants and trees. Flamingo Gardens wildlife sanctuary is home to the largest collection of Florida native wildlife including alligators, bobcats, eagles, otters, panthers, peacock, and of course, flamingos!
Established in 1927, Flamingo Gardens is one of the oldest botanical gardens and attractions in South Florida. Originally founded by Floyd L. and Jane Wray as an orange grove, the nonprofit botanical gardens is home to 18 “Champion” trees, the largest trees of their species, including the largest tree in Florida. Specialized botanical gardens, including a Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden, Croton Garden, and Bromeliad Garden dot the main Arboretum.
The centerpiece of the gardens is a natural hammock of 200 year-old Live Oaks dripping with species orchids and epiphytes. Here sits the historic Wray Home Museum, built in 1933 by Floyd L. and Jane Wray as a weekend retreat. It is the oldest residence in Broward County west of University Drive. The building was restored in 1991 to depict a typical South Florida country home of the 1930's.
Nestled in and around the gardens, the Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is home to over 90 species of Florida native birds and animals, most of whom are permanently injured or non-releasable.The half-acre Free-flight Aviary boasts over 250 wading birds representing over 45 species, and the Bird of Prey Center houses one of the largest raptor collections in the United States.
Flamingo Gardens is owned and operated by the Floyd L. Wray Memorial Foundation, Inc. which was established in 1969 by Mrs. Wray in honor of her late husband. Her wish to preserve the core property for future generations and emphasize the flora, fauna, and history of the Florida Everglades is the core of Flamingo Gardens' mission still today.

Help Us Save This Beauty Spot- Flamingo Gardens
Floyd L. Wray wrote in 1939, “You are welcome to Flamingo [Gardens] and are invited to spend as much time as you desire, my only request being...that you help us preserve this beauty spot for others.”
Through the years, Flamingo Gardens has brought forth the vision of Mr. & Mrs. Wray, preserving this beautiful and historical place, protecting native plants and wildlife, and educating the public about the significance of the Everglades.
What started as a modest citrus grove in 1927 is today a respected botanical collection and wildlife sanctuary visited by more than 150,000 guests every year. Flamingo Gardens is a designated Cultural Landmark and the Wrays’ weekend residence is a museum giving a glimpse of South Florida life in the 30s and 40s. The Gardens boast some of the largest trees of their species in the state and the wildlife sanctuary houses the largest collection of Florida native birds and animals, most of them permanently injured or non-releasable. The ecological field trips at the gardens are attended by approximately 30,000 students each year and have become a tradition for generations of South Floridians.
So, all would be well at the Gardens — were it not for the fact that decades of wear and tear have taken a toll on the buildings. Though facing daunting challenges, Flamingo Gardens has forged boldly ahead. Flamingo Gardens Board of Trustees and staff have taken steps to create a ten-year Master Plan to secure the future of the gardens. Near term plans to implement the Master Plan include successfully reaching a $4.8 million fundraising goal to design and build a new Welcome Center and a new Education Center.
With support from existing contributors and the investment of new supporters who are inspired by our vision, Flamingo Gardens is poised to rise to a new level of prominence and effectiveness in South Florida. Together we can preserve this “beauty spot”, and assure the continuation of Flamingo Gardens historical, ecological, and educational programing for years to come.

They wouldn't let us in the enclosure, but fortunately we were able to hand feed the flamingos at Flamingo Gardens near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The experience doesn't rival that of Sarasota Gardens near Sarasota, but you can still hand feed them here.

Young at Art Museum (2019) rocks!
Today I visited the Young at Art Museum in Davie Florida.
Young At Art Museum (YAA) is a museum in Davie, Florida founded in 1987 with the belief that art is a fundamental part of a child's complete education. It is located at 751 SW 121st Avenue, Davie, Florida, USA, in the Greater Fort Lauderdale region. The museum is one of only 8 Major Cultural Institutions in Broward County, and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
Young At Art Museum (originally named Young At Art Children's Museum) was founded in 1987 to fill a void in arts education in South Florida public schools. Founded by artists Esther and Mindy Shrago, Young At Art traveled South Florida for two years as a Museum Without Walls, opening in 1989 in a 3,200 sq. ft. storefront in Plantation, Florida. Outgrowing its space immediately, YAA utilized creative means for meeting the demands of families, from leasing storefronts for camps and classes to establishing a Traveling Exhibit Program for small museums in Florida. Ten years later, in response to overwhelming community demand, Young At Art relocated to Davie in 1998, moving into a 24,000 sq. ft. leased space and proving its ability to successfully operate a $1 million+ museum with exhibit galleries, art studio classes, student field trips and events for 100,000 children and families annually.
Over the next decade, Young At Art set its sights on establishing a permanent home. With federal, state, county, town and community support – and through a public/private partnership with Broward County – Young At Art opened a groundbreaking new 55,000 sq. ft. Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) museum and public library on May 5, 2012, named by the Knight Foundation as one of the most transformative arts initiatives in South Florida.
It was amazing!!!
