The Battlefields from Above | WW1 France & Belgium | DJI Phantom Drone/Osmo Handheld
This is a short edit from my recent trip to the WW1 battlefields in Belgium and France in June 2017. Hopefully there will be a few more videos to follow this one giving a bit more detail about some of the places we visited along with some more footage.
I have been to some of these locations before, but the ability to get a birds eye view of some of the locations makes them even more breathtaking than I could've ever imagined.
Before filming in these historic locations I checked with the relevant authorities for permission to fly the Phantom at these locations. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) agreed that I could fly; whereas it is strictly forbidden at all the Canadian Memorials in accordance with Canadian National Park rules.
Locations in this video (not in the order they appear);
- Vimy Ridge (Canadian National Memorial)
- Tyne Cot Cemetery [The largest CWGC cemetery in the world]
- Thiepval Memorial to the Missing (of the Somme) [The largest CWGC monument in the world]
- Toronto Avenue Cemetery - CWGC
- Mud Corner Cemetery - CWGC
- Prowse Point Cemetery* - CWGC
- Hyde Park Corner Cemetery & Royal Berkshire Extension - CWGC
- Spanbroekmolen Mine Crater (Pool of Peace) - Talbot House
- Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery - CWGC
- Lone Tree Cemetery - CWGC
*An interesting point to note is that Prowse Point Cemetery is the only WW1 cemetery the Ypres Salient to be named after a person and not a place. This is due to the heroism of Major Charles Prowse. It is also the location of where the 1914 'Christmas Truce Game of Football' took place.
More information about the Royal British Legion can be found at
Thanks to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for allowing me to film at these locations. Check them out here
Music; Dreams and Visions by Tony Anderson
Filmed using DJI OSMO and DJI Phantom 3 Pro in 4K.

Belgium travel tip : Hill 60 - Ypres - Belgium flanders trip #Belgium
Hill 60 is a World War I battlefield memorial site and park in the Zwarteleen area of Zillebeke south of Ypres, Belgium. It is located about 4.6 kilometres (2.9 mi) from the centre of Ypres and directly on the railway line to Comines. Before World War I the hill was known locally as Côte des Amants (French for Lover's Knoll). The site comprises two areas of raised land separated by the railway line; the northern area was known by soldiers as Hill 60 while the southern part was known as The Caterpillar.
In the collapsed tunnels beneath Hill 60, many British and German dead are buried. The Belgian government made the hill and the surrounding enclosure a battlefield memorial site and to preserve it, far as nature permits, in the state in which it was left after World War I. The park at the memorial site is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). The memorial park also has the remains of several bunkers and craters from the fighting from 1915–1917. A large concrete bunker in the centre of the site is preserved almost as it was found at the end of the war. This bunker was originally German, but modified by the Australians in 1918.

Flanders Field, Ypres, Belgium
From 1914 to 1918 Flanders Fields was a major battle theatre in the First World War. A million soldiers from more than 50 different countries were wounded, missing or killed in action here. Entire cities and villages were destroyed, their population on the run. Ypres and Passchendaele became worldwide symbols for the senselessness of war. Today, the peaceful region still bears witness to this history in monuments, museums, cemeteries and the countless individual stories that link it with the world.

Belgium travel tip : Bayernwald Trenches - Ypres - Belgium Visiting Flanders #Belgium
Bayernwald Trenches
Croonaert Wood was one of the sites used by German units to defend the area around the Ypres Salient. The Germans built a defensive complex of trenches, dugouts and bunkers on the slightly elevated landscape, from which artillery observers had an excellent view of the ground around Wijtschate and Ypres. The location was called Bayernwald by German soldiers due to the fact that the first German soldiers to be stationed there were from Bavaria (Bayern in German).
The area was the site of extensive mining activity by both German and British units during the war. Before the Battle of Messines, the tunnelling companies of the Royal Engineers placed a large mine around the German strongpoint Günther, not far from the Bayernwald trenches.
