Family Skiing in Chamonix
From Les Praz village, the cable car glides over the Chamonix golf course and takes you to the La Flégère site at an altitude of 1,877m. There is a family ski area with a green run called Trappe. A free zipline, and a little restaurant and snack bar. If you want to go higher, a chair lift takes you to the Index, at an altitude of 2,595m.

Brevent is the closest summer lift to the centre of Chamonix and its impressive rocky summit rises to 2,525m above sea level. You can access the mid station at 1,999m either by the Plan Praz gondola or on foot, up the steep zig-zagging path that's visible from the town centre otherwise knows as the Vertical Kilometre.
From mid station you can take the Brevent cable car straight to the top of the mountain and start various hikes from there or just take in the incredible views as you look across to the Mont Blanc massif. Plan Praz mid station offers a great view point for Mont Blanc, and is also a popular take off spot for may paragliders in both winter & summer.
From the very top of Brevent you can follow the footpath to the Aiguillette des Houches via the Bel Lachat mountain hut, trek further afield across to Samoens, across to Flegere via the connecting cable car, or walk back down to the mid station, taking in the views on the way. The Plaques du Brevent climbing spot is accessible from here too, and during the summer you might be able to watch BASE jumpers tackling the particularly technical take off spot from the side of the summit.

Flégère Chamonix 2016
Filmed on Wed 17th February 2016 - Flégère was an afternoon skiing session after spending the morning skiing Brévent.
Flégère is sometimes underestimated as a ski area due to its perceived size, yet the area has three black, seven red, two green and two blue pistes.
The main runs are the Lachenal, Index and Pylônes red runs and the Pic Janvier black run served by the 6 person Index Lift and the red Crochues and black Floria runs requiring a further drag lift.
There are seldom lift queues and the slopes were relatively quiet, even during the February school mid term break.
A black run goes down from La Flégère to Les Praz, although this is patrolled, it is not pisted. This is probably not the most difficult of black runs but it is very long.
La Flégère offers some good off piste skiing, for example: Combes Lachenal, Glieres, Crochues, etc. but was well tracked out as there hadnt been any recent snow in the days prior to my visit.
This is also a great place to go on a powder day. Grands Montets will draw all the crowds and most runs will be tracked out before noon but if you head to Flegere you can enjoy the powder without the long queues all day.

Brevent , probably the best place to see Mont Blanc from, 4,810m
Discover the Brevent and its great panoramic view of the Chamonix Valley including a stunning view of Mont Blanc. From Chamonix, you can take the gondola/telecabine lift to Plan Praz (1,999m), then the cable car to Le Brévent (2,525m).
Plan Praz is the starting point for many great trekking routes, including walking trips to Lake Cornu and Grand Balcon Sud. It also known as a great take-off area for paragliding. From the top of Le Brévent, a footpath goes to Aiguillette des Houches via the Bel-Lachat mountain hut.
The climbing walls of Brévent that face Mont Blanc, are a sunny, pleasant and quiet climbing spot, just a 5 minutes walk from the top of the cable car.
There are two restaurants on this route. Firstly La Bergerie serves traditional cuisine and snacks located at Plan Praz. In Le Brévent, the Le Panoramique restaurant offers traditional Frech cuisine and a unique panoramic view of Mont Blanc.

Although the Brévent ski station is the closest to the centre of Chamonix. The hill from Chamonix centre to the bottom station is deceptively steep to walk up, especially in ski boots. The easiest way up is to catch the free bus.
The new Gondola make the journey quick and usually queue free and on the day I filmed took me above the couds that draped Chamonix at a lower altitude.
It is well worth taking the extra Gondola to Brévent itself. I had last been their on the final leg of the Tour du Mont Blanc in the previous Summer and it was amazing to see the barren rocky landscape transformed by metres of snow.
The view from the top is equally amazing Summer and Winter and food for the soul... well worth taking a few moments to appreciate life. While the run from Brévent to Plan Praz is marked as Black it is in reality a reasonable meandering track well within the capabilities of most skiers.
The remainder of the area consists of five or six blue and red runs, and one black run including some mogulled sections of varying slope... good for practice. The expanse means it seldom feels crowded and combined with the sunshine on its southern aspect makes it a good area for an enjoyable morning's skiing.
TheLiaison Gondola connecting Brévent and Flégère makes it possible to ski one area in the morning and the other in an afternoon, which I did.

We climbed up to Lac Blanc after taking the cablecar to Flegere. Temperature was about 5 degrees celcius in Chamonix town. Took us 1hr 30min to reach Lac Blanc from Flegere. Thank God the hut at Lac Blanc was open cause we were craving for water. ...... but had beer instead + lunch there! The vegetable soup was heavenly. Went down via Lac Nior and then turned right back to the Flegere Station. Great open views all around. (Sound codec: Microsoft ADPCM)

2017 Chamonix (La Brevent) Long off-piste traverse from Cornu lift
heavy, sticky powder at Chamonix, took the long traverse, skier's right from the Cornu lift, including the 5 minute climb over the saddle. This is off-piste with the adjacent run being the Cornu run.
You can see the large swaths of rough snow with no tracks - these are avalance debris fields, cleared by ski patrol earlier that day. This stuff is super dense and packed - unlike the adjacent powder...

4 teammates walked to cable car station and took cable car up to Planpraz. This route in Chamonix was parallel to the official TMB route from La Flegere to Planpraz, but one was on ground level and the other was on top of mountain. Adding up to the terrible path we walked down from La Flegere a day ago, we did not cheat. Thanks to the cable car in La Flegere again for not in service again.
The remaining 3 teammates took bus to Les Houches directly after enjoying a big lunch in a Japanese restaurant and buying souvenir.
After reaching Planpraz, 2 teammates changed to other cable car to go to Le Brevent directly. Then they walked down to Les Houches themselves
Phyllis and I was the only teammates who sticked to the itinerary. Nothing worth mentioning on the way to Col du Brevent. However, starting from Col du Brevent, the official TMB path to Le Brevent was covered by thick steep slope of snow. We followed a tour guide changing to a less dangerous path, but still was not easy. Anyway, after a 10 day training, it was only a piece of cake for us. We noticed that there were more people on track compared in late June, as July was a hot season for hiking TMB.
Hiking down from Le Brevent was boring because it was a long path with few exciting spot and very few beautiful scene. However, when my eyes caught the sight of Hotel les Melezes, I was moved. I have completed the whole circle of TMB route by foot and returned to the starting point 11 days ago.
