Fleury-devant-Douaumont est une commune française située dans le département de la Meuse, en région Lorraine. Le village fut détruit en 1916 pendant la bataille de Verdun et ne fut pas reconstruit. Depuis, le site de la commune est devenu un lieu de souvenir inhabité. Fleury-devant-Douaumont est un village dont les 422 habitants, en 1913, vivent principalement de l'agriculture céréalière et du travail du bois.
En aout 1914 ses 400 habitants voient défiler les régiments de Verdun qui partent en couverture dans la plaine de la Woere, En septembre le front se fixe à quelque kilomètres au nord du village .EN 1915 intact et débordant de troupes fait partie des fortifications de Verdun.
Le 21 février 1916, les habitants de Fleury devant Douaumont sont évacué vers le Bras de Meuse, le 24 chute du fort et le premier bombardement sur le village .Entre Froideterre et Souville et après la chute de fort de Vaux ; le village se retrouve en première ligne. Il fut pris et repris 16 fois, le 17 et 18 aout le régiment d’infanterie colonial du Maroc qui se battait depuis 10 jours dans les ruines s’élance à l’assaut en chantant la marseillaise et reprend définitivement le village entièrement détruit et c’est la dans ses ruines ou part les offensives qui reprendront les fort et Douaumont et Vaux. Situé sur le secteur de Verdun, le village disparaît totalement sous l'acharnement des pilonnages des obus français et allemands.
En 1918, Fleury-Devant-Douaumont est un « village mort pour la France » comme 9 autres sur le front de Verdun. Plusieurs villages de Bavière ont une rue nommée Fleury, nom donné en l'honneur des soldats de la Garde bavaroise tombés lors des assauts sur le village. En 1916, la commune normande appelée Allemagne change son nom en Fleury-sur-Orne en l'honneur du village détruit

Fleury-devant-Douaumont is one of six small villages close to Verdun in France officially designated as a village that died for France.
The intensive artillery bombardments associated with the Battle of Verdun in 1916 meant that these villages were completely destroyed. Following the war, the French authorities decided that the damage was bnoth too severe to repair but also too dangerous to attempt (due to unexploded ordanance). Today, markers indicate where key buildings were located.

DIE HÖLLE von VERDUN
Hier zeigt sich der Grauen des Krieges!!
Über das Städtchen bzw. die Umgebung von Verdun. Ein Name, den sicher jeder schon einmal im Geschichtsunterricht gehört hat. Der Besuch des Schlachtfeldes hat mich sehr tief bewegt.
Denn hier fand die blutigste Schlacht des Ersten Weltkrieges statt. Deshalb möchte ich nicht nur die historischen Sehenswürdigkeiten zeigen, sondern auch etwas von der Geschichte an alle übermitteln, so dass man einen tieferen Einblick in die Bedeutung der Stadt VERDUN bekommt.
Das Unternehmen Gericht. So nennt General von Falkenhayn seinen Schlachtplan um Verdun. Er soll nicht dazu führen große Geländegewinne zu machen, nein die französischen Truppen sollen sich?verbluten?. Das Kaiserreich möchte dadurch eine Schwächung der französischen Truppen erreichen.
So brüllen am 21.Februar 1916 um 8 Uhr 12 Minuten eintausendzweihundertfünfundzwanzig deutsche Geschütze los und verschießen ein unvergleichliches Trommelfeuer auf die französischen Linien.
Um 8.17 Uhr sind die Schallwellen in Trier zu hören, um 8.18 Uhr in Saarbrücken seit 8.12 Uhr klirren in Straßburg die Fensterscheiben und werden noch wochenlang weiter klirren. Um 8.23 ist selbst im weit entfernten Paris ein dumpfes Rollen vernehmbar! So grauenvoll ertönt der Schlachtenlärm.
In den nächsten Jahren werden bei dieser grauenvollen Schlacht mehr als 350.000 Menschen ihr Leben verlieren und über 800.000 verwundet und verstümmelt werden.
All das sollte man vorher bedenken ehe man das damals mit Blut durchtränkte Gelände FLEURY devant DOUAUMONT besucht.

Nécropole française de Fleury devant Douaumont (55)
Situé à quarante kilomètres de la frontière allemande fixée en 1871, le village de Fleury-devant-Douaumont. En mai 1916, le village est en ruines. Entre juin et août, le village change seize fois de mains. Finalement, les ruines du village sont définitivement reprises le 18 août par les Marsouins du régiment d’infanterie coloniale du Maroc. Du village et des fermes alentours, il ne reste rien. En 1918, le village de Fleury-devant-Douaumont est l'un des 12 villages du département, érigé au rang de « village meusien mort pour la France ». Citées à l'ordre de l'armée en septembre 1920, les ruines du village de Fleury sont inscrites dans la zone rouge et deviennent au fil du temps un haut-lieu du souvenir de la bataille de Verdun.
Le cimetière national de Fleury-devant-Douaumont regroupe les dépouilles de soldats morts pour la France lors des combats qui se déroulèrent dans la région de Verdun de 1914 à 1918, et principalement ceux de la bataille de Verdun. Créé en 1923, le cimetière est aménagé jusqu'en 1936. Dès août 1925, les corps provenant de petits cimetières autour de Verdun. Les années suivantes, on y inhuma les corps que l'on continuait à découvrir dans la «zone rouge».le cimetière national est lié à la construction de l'ossuaire de Douaumont Inauguré le 23 juin 1929 en présence de Gaston Doumergue.
Le cimetière contient plus de 16 000 corps en tombes individuel et 560 de religion musulman et un carré spécial inconnus dont les corps ont été retrouvé récemment et 6 tombes de soldats français mort pendant la seconde guerre mondial .
