Flinders Street Station, Melbourne Australia. 1990.
Flinders Street Station, Melbourne 1990.
I've got around 3 hours of footage on one VHS tape that I'll edit when I've got time. There's also another tape from 1987 which I still need to convert. This was all filmed by my workmate Campbell Blight, who is still working at Flinders St and has been there for around 40 years.
A Sunday morning at Flinders Street Station - Metro Trains Melbourne
In this video we see some trains at Flinders Street Station; Melbourne's main railway station serving as the main hub of the metropolitan rail network. Here we see a couple of Metro Comeng and X'trapolis EMU's departing various platforms.
Usually a busy and bustling station, the station is rather quiet on a Sunday morning. Under the Sunday timetable trains on most lines run every 40 minutes until 10am when normal service levels resume. This entire video was filmed in the space of half an hour while I was waiting to transfer between lines.
However this wasn't a typical Sunday morning as heritage operator Steamrail was running their second Snow Train to Traralgon. Hauled by two Victorian Railways R Class steam locomotives R711 & R761, we see the train arrive and depart from platform 10.

Flinders Street Station - Peak Hour - August 2019
Walking into Melbourne's Flinders Street station at the start of the evening peak. I head to Platform 5 and jump on a Comeng heading for Sunbury. Note the big jolt when the train takes off - not sure what's happening there, but the same thing happened departing Parliament as well.

Trains at Flinders Street Station - Metro Trains Melbourne
In this video we visit the iconic Flinders Street Station; Melbourne's busiest railway station that serves as the hub for the metropolitan rail network. We see various Metro Trains Melbourne Comeng, Siemens and X'trapolis EMU's recorded from all of Flinders Street's active platforms. We also see a couple of V/Line Vlocities and N Class trains, as well as the QUBE Maryvale paper train passing through.
Flinders Street opened as one of Melbourne's first railway stations in 1854 as part of Melbourne's first rail line to Port Melbourne. However over time it grew to become the cities' main rail station as new lines were built. From 1900 to 1909 the current Flinders Street station was built, including the construction of the main station building, inspired by the French Renaissance style with large domes and clocktowers; truely becoming a Melbourne icon.
The role of Flinders Street grew as the metropolitan rail network was electrified from 1919 onwards, to the extend that in 1926 it was the worlds busiest train station!
However by the 1960's and 1970's the station was in various states of disrepair, with multiple redevelopment proposals being touted during this time (thankfully none succeeded as we would have had another NY Penn Station if they did). From 1982 onwards the station has been refurbished and upgraded numerous times, which often involved expanding the Swanston Street Concouse, replacing ramps with escalators and lifts , and other various works.
The most recent refurbishment was conducted between 2015 - 2018, which involved $100 million to repaint the station to its original colours, refurbish all the toilet facilies, upgrade the Elizabeth Street subway, and other improvements.

MADRIX @ Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, Australia
Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, Australia, is the busiest railway station in Australia and sees over 90,000 passengers pass through its imposing entrance every day. As one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, the much-admired building has a striking daytime presence because of its Edwardian Baroque architectural style featuring a prominent dome, arched entrance, tower and clocks. But by night the building’s appearance was diluted and unsightly light spillover from taller adjacent buildings muddled its facade.

Hosier Lane
Hosier Lane is a bluestone cobbled vehicular and pedestrian laneway on the southern edge of the central city grid. Hosier lane is a much celebrated landmark mainly due to its sophisticated Urban art.
Hosier Lane lies opposite the entrance to the Atrium at Federation Square on Flinders St, a prominent position in the city.
The lane has been noted for the quality and the often political nature of its art. It features in the state-sponsored book The Melbourne Design Guide and in Tourism Victoria's Lose Yourself in Melbourne advertising campaign, leading to questions about the dichotomy of Victoria's approach to graffiti. The graffiti-covered walls and art-installations have become a popular backdrop for fashion and wedding photography.
Hosier Lane is also known for its upmarket cocktail lounges including the popular Misty and MoVida. An open air cooking session with MoVida's chef Frank Camorra on Masterchef Australia season 2 showcased the lane as a major Melbourne attraction.

Flinders Street railway station
place:
Flinders Street railway station is a railway station on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It serves the entire metropolitan rail network. Backing onto the city reach of the Yarra River in the heart of the city, the complex covers two whole city blocks and extends from Swanston Street to Queen Street.
Flinders Street is served by Metro's suburban services, and V/Line regional services to Gippsland. It is the busiest station on Melbourne's metropolitan network and the busiest railway station in Australia, with over 77,153 daily entries recorded in the 2017/18 fiscal year. It was the first railway station in an Australian city and the world's busiest passenger station in the late 1920s.
The main station building, completed in 1909, is a cultural icon of Melbourne. The art nouveau style building, with its prominent dome, arched entrance, tower and clocks is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The Melburnian saying I'll meet you under the clocks refers to the row of clocks above the main entrance, which indicate the time-tabled time of departure for trains on each line; another saying, I'll meet you on the steps, refers to the wide staircase underneath these clocks. Flinders Street Station is responsible for two of Melbourne's busiest pedestrian crossings, both across Flinders Street, including one of Melbourne's few pedestrian scrambles.
Listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, the station has Australia's longest platform which is 708-metres long and is also the fourth longest railway platform in the world.

Chinatown Melbourne Info:
Chinatown (Chinese: 墨爾本華埠) is an ethnic enclave in the Central Business District (CBD) of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Centred at the eastern end of Little Bourke Street, it extends between the corners of Swanston and Spring Streets, and consists of numerous laneways, alleys and arcades. Established in the 1850s during the Victorian gold rush, it is notable for being the longest continuous Chinese settlement in the Western World and the oldest Chinatown in the Southern Hemisphere.
Melbourne's Chinatown has played an important role in establishing the culture of Chinese immigrants in Australia and is still home to many Chinese restaurants, cultural venues, businesses and places of worship. Today, Melbourne's Chinatown is a major tourist attraction, known for its architectural heritage, annual festivals and cuisines of Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Indian, Malaysian, Vietnamese and Korean origins.
Beyond Chinatown and the CBD, Melbourne's Chinese community is well-represented in other areas of the city, such as Box Hill and Glen Waverley. Chinatown is home to the Chinese Museum.
Flinders Street Info:
Flinders Street is a notable street in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Running roughly parallel to the Yarra River, Flinders Street forms the southern edge of the Hoddle Grid. It is exactly 1 mi (1.609 km) in length and one and a half chains (99 ft, 30 m) in width. It is named for the explorer Matthew Flinders, erroneously credited with discovering Port Phillip at the time of its naming. It extends eastwards as far as Spring Street and the Treasury Gardens and westwards past Batman's Hill to the Melbourne Docklands. As the closest street to the river, Flinders Street serviced Melbourne's original river port. Customs House, now the site for Victoria's Immigration Museum, is on Flinders Street.
The street is home to Flinders Street station, the central station in Melbourne's suburban rail network. Tram routes 70 and 75, as well as the City Circle route, run along Flinders Street, and the Flinders Street Viaduct runs parallel to the street, linking the city's two major railway stations.
Other landmarks on Flinders Street include Federation Square, St Paul's Cathedral, Young and Jackson Hotel, the Banana Alley Vaults, the old Herald and Weekly Times building, Melbourne Aquarium and Batman Park, which adjoins the Yarra River. It was once home to the Melbourne Fish Market, an ornate building constructed in 1890, covering 23,000 square metres, and of similar design to Flinders Street Station. The market was demolished between 1958 and 1960 after which the site became a public carpark. The site is now home to the three towers of the Northbank Place complex which includes office space, residential apartments, retail outlets and a multi-level carpark.
