Wonderful Indonesia | Travelling to Labuan Bajo, Komodo, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia
Labuan Bajo is now a busy bustling epicenter of tourism. It is, the launching point for impressive trips to Komodo Island and Rinca Island, home of the famous Komodo dragons. Besides spotting the Varanus komodensis, the main attraction in this area is the extraordinary marine life. Komodo archipelago is indeed a paradise for both divers and snorkellers. Several islands within a hour by boat from Labuan Bajo offer great diving and snorkeling opportunities: Bidadari Island, Seraya Island, Sabolo Island to the North of Labuan Bajo, and Kanawa and Sebayur island to the West. Southward, on the route to Rinca there is Kalong Island house of a colony of “flying foxes”, huge bats that can be seen flying away in thousands at dusk.
Komodo National Park encompasses a lot of water and islands west of Labuanbajo. If you want to go to Rinca or Komodo island you will have to buy a 1 day park pass to enter. It typically costs 350,000 IDR per person for a package that includes round trip boat rides, and with a stop for snorkeling and lunch at a nearby island on the way back (snorkeling equipment and lunch are included, but the park fees are not). Inquire as to whether there will be towels and life vests provided, as these are not a given.
The mating season for the Komodo dragons is in July and August, so they are often harder to spot then.
2 night/3 day Boat trips can be organized with local tour operators ranging from 700,000 to 2,000,000 per person excluding park entrance fees, or boat anchorage fees. Please note that the tour includes snorkelling at a number of locations and visiting both Komodo and Rinca Islands. Despite price differences the trip itself is usually identical with prices differences dependent on the season, amount of guests, on sleeping accommodation on the boat and the kind of food you eat. For a good deal try to negotiate with captains directly.
It might be a better idea to organize the tour from Kanawa if you are planning to go there as it is nearer Rinca and Komodo and you have more time for snorkelling and it might be cheaper. However, as of 2015, only day- and half-day trips are offered at Kanawa, while longer trips must be arranged elsewhere.
Besides, Bapak Gregorius from the Cool Corner Backpackers Hostel is apparently originally from Komodo and could organize a cheap boat transfer to the island + home stay for a night or more.
Rinca Island (Indonesian: Rinca Kecil or Pulau Rinca) is a more convenient place to see Komodo Dragons than Komodo island. Some dive operators might be convinced to combine a stop at the island with a days diving - otherwise charters can be arranged, or walk along the main street of Labuan Bajo and some tour agencies may be advertising places on an existing charter. There are big dragons that are often right in front of the pier when people arrive. On arrival a guide will escort you to the park office where you will be relieved of a range of fees totaling 275,000Rp, plus guide fee of 80,000Rp, then you can choose one of three hikes based on distance. While good for three days in the past, the national park fee is now only good for a single day for both Rinca and Komodo Islands. If you do a two day boat trip, they'll usually include Rinca and Komodo in the same day so you dont have to pay the fee twice.
Trekking Mt. Mbeliling, Cunca Rami Water Fall and Crater Lake The ideal region for eco-adventures. Manggarai’s mountains, lakes and waterfalls offers many hiking and trekking routes to suit all experience levels of hikers.

Jumping for Joy - at Cunca Wulang Waterfall, Flores, Komodo
When was the last time you really jumped for joy? Maybe you won a prize, got married, or passed an exam?
We jumped for joy quite literally recently during 8 days at Blue Marlin Dive Komodo in Labuan Bajo - scuba diving with manta rays, and then trekking to Cunca Wulang where we jumped off an 8 meter high cliff into the water!
This little video (with aerial footage) shows how beautiful the trek is through a forest to get to the waterfall and the mind-blowing, adrenaline fuelled jump into the flowing river below...
The waterfall itself really is a magical, hidden gem, tucked away in this beautiful forest that is waiting for you to come and enjoy too!

FLORES & KOMODO ISLANDS | Indonesia
Sailing through the Komodo Islands by boat and scootering through Flores over 10 days was safe to say a damn good time. I was hanging in Indonesia when my mate Charles from HELLO FLORES ( got a hold of me and suggested we go on an adventure so I packed my Camera bag (pretty much all I packed ????) and gave Naude (helped me shoot parts of the trip) and Kirsten a call to join in, they didn't need much convincing. The 10 day's consisted of many hikes up volcanoes and down to waterfalls, endless diving in the clearest water I've been in and even witnessing Komodo dragons chow down on a water buffalo ????. Flores definitely has a raw untouched feel to it, the people are extremely friendly and the natural beauty is next level. If you enjoy Indonesia and spending time in Bali then I would definitely make this area a part of your trip.

FLORES PT.1, INDONESIA - The Way Overland - Episode 15
We've now crossed our first official land border into Indonesia!
Our first destination is Kupang, the capital of the provence of East Nusa Tenggara and the island of Timor's biggest city. There is not a lot happening in the city though and subsequently is mainly used for a transit point between Timor, Flores, Rote and the islands to the North.
We had a couple of options from Kupang. Take the short crossing to the island of Rote and spend a few week surfing or continue westward to Flores. We didn’t particularly want to be stuck in Kupang for Christmas so the we opted for the latter for two reasons, its now the wet season and the onshores are blowing meaning the surf is unreliable and also as due to the increased wind and swell the crossing to Flores is often cancelled. The overnight ferry crossing from Kupang to Flores takes around 14 hours and is pretty basic. Thankfully we had our house so could retreat to get some sleep.
The ferry pulled into Larantuka at about 2:30 in the morning, so we found a spot in the ferry carpark to catch a couple more hours sleep. Then at breaky we met a lovely local, Sandy, who offered to show us around his home town.
After our tour of the markets and jetty in Larantuka, we started the 230km drive to Kelimutu, a volcano with tri-coloured crater lakes sitting at 1639m.
We found a camp spot just down from the volcano so that we could get up nice and early the next morning to go up to the summit in time for the sunrise. Unfortunately, Jolie's alarm didn't go off (or she turned it off), so we ended up reaching the top at about 8:30, which worked out well in the end as the misty morning had cleared by the time we got up there, making for some pretty awesome drone shots!
Hope you guys enjoyed the video! Next week we're driving to the north coast to a town called Riung where we have a fun day of snorkeling, then to Bajawa to soak in the hot springs and visit a traditional village, and to finish it off going diving in the Komodo National Park off Labuan Bajo.
If you have any suggestions on places we must see in Indonesia we’d love to hear from you!

Komodo Dragons (& the Labuan Bajo Seafood Night Market) // Summer: Indonesia 2
We spent the summer traveling Indonesia! We went to Labuan Bajo to arrange a tour of Komodo National Park - the only place in the world that you can see wild Komodo Dragons! It's something that I've always wanted to do - a bucket list item.
We ended up arriving late. Our plane was delayed 2 hours, so we didn't get into town until around 7:00PM. We had to hurry to find a tour for the next day, but there were plenty of options.
The tours are pretty much all the same. You go for 1 or 2 days. The 2 day excursion has more to offer, but the sleeping conditions are usually just a mattress on the deck of the boat. There are two things that I will put an effort into making good: 1) food 2) sleep. We had to sacrifice a couple decent meals for this boat trip. There was no way I was sacrificing a comfortable nights sleep.
So we decided on the 1 day tour, which was suppose to include a hike to a viewpoint on Padar Island, the Komodo dragons at Komodo Island, Pink Beach (which has pink sand), and some snorkeling with Manta Rays at Manta Point. But there was a catch, if the ocean was too rough then they would go to Rinca Island instead of Komodo, and you would go to 2 snorkeling areas that were closer to mainland instead of Pink beach and Manta Point.
At 5:30 AM we headed to the boat and watched the sun come up as we rode for about 2 hours. Breakfast was a couple of buns, but local coffee was free-flowing. The hike up to the viewpoint was very hot and sunny, but it was quite beautiful. I think we spent about an hour there.
After that, we got back on the boat fully expecting to head to Komodo Island next, but we went back the way we came to Rinca. No one said that it was too rough - it didn't seem that bad. I got the feeling that the boat crew preferred the much closer expedition. It's a shorter day and it's less fuel.
The difference between Rinka and Komodo, from what I read, is that Komodo is a bit more natural. You go on a hike and try to see the dragons. At Rinka, you also hike, but all the dragons we saw were sleeping around the park headquarter's huts. Somewhere online, I read that they feed them so they hangout there. I asked the guide and he said they don't feed them because it's too dangerous. Who knows.
Either way, we saw the largest lizard in the world - up close and personal - and it was really cool. They're pretty scary. They look grumpy. I wouldn't want to upset one.
At one point, one came around the corner and ran at another one. The guide yelled Get back! Get back!, which we were all frantically doing already. It was the highlight of the day.
Both snorkeling spots ended up being duds. The little sand island we went to was nice to relax on, but the sea life was pretty minor.
We got back to Labuan Bajo at about 5:00PM, just in time to clean up and head out to the seafood night market for a feast of fish and squid, and to discuss the daily events.
The night market is a great place to eat in Labuan Bajo. It was full of fresh seafood and other Indonesian eats. We had a bit of a hard time finding it, but it turned out that it had been moved from the area by the harbor side market, to a field in behind the mosque (on the main street along the water).
We picked out a fresh red snapper and a squid and had them grill them up. It comes with rice and a bit of vegetables. The food was pretty good and the atmosphere was fun, with flames roaring from grills and the call to prayer being blasted from the nearby mosque.
