Miami, Florida, United States, North America
Miami is a city located on the Atlantic coast in southeastern Florida and the county seat of Miami-Dade County. The 42nd largest city proper in the United States, with a population of 419,777, it is the principal, central, and most populous city of the Miami metropolitan area, and the most populous metropolis in the Southeastern United States after Washington, D.C. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami's metro area is the eighth most populous and fourth-largest urban area in the United States, with a population of around 5.5 million. Miami is a major center and a leader in finance, commerce, culture, media, entertainment, the arts, and international trade. In 2012, Miami was classified as an Alpha- World City in the World Cities Study Group's inventory. In 2010, Miami ranked seventh in the United States in terms of finance, commerce, culture, entertainment, fashion, education, and other sectors. It ranked thirty-third among global cities. In 2008, Forbes magazine ranked Miami America's Cleanest City, for its year-round good air quality, vast green spaces, clean drinking water, clean streets and city-wide recycling programs. According to a 2009 UBS study of 73 world cities, Miami was ranked as the richest city in the United States, and the world's fifth-richest city in terms of purchasing power. Miami is nicknamed the Capital of Latin America, is the second largest U.S. city with a Spanish-speaking majority, and the largest city with a Cuban-American plurality. Downtown Miami is home to the largest concentration of international banks in the United States, and many large national and international companies. The Civic Center is a major center for hospitals, research institutes, medical centers, and biotechnology industries. For more than two decades, the Port of Miami, known as the Cruise Capital of the World, has been the number one cruise passenger port in the world. It accommodates some of the world's largest cruise ships and operations, and is the busiest port in both passenger traffic and cruise lines. Miami has a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen climate classification Am) with hot and humid summers and short, warm winters, with a marked drier season in the winter. Its sea-level elevation, coastal location, position just above the Tropic of Cancer, and proximity to the Gulf Stream shapes its climate. With January averaging 67.2 °F (19.6 °C), winter features mild to warm temperatures; cool air usually settles after the passage of a cold front, which produces much of the little amount of rainfall. Lows sometimes fall below 50 °F (10 °C), but very rarely below 35 °F (2 °C). Highs generally range between 70--77 °F (21--25 °C). The wet season begins some time in May, ending in mid-October. During this period, temperatures are in the mid 80s to low 90s (29--35 °C), accompanied by high humidity, though the heat is often relieved by afternoon thunderstorms or a sea breeze that develops off the Atlantic Ocean, which then allow lower temperatures, but conditions still remain very muggy. Much of the year's 55.9 inches (1,420 mm) of rainfall occurs during this period. Extremes range from 27 °F (−2.8 °C) on February 3, 1917 to 100 °F (38 °C) on July 21, 1940. Miami has never recorded any snowfall although there were disputed claims of snow flurries on January 19, 1977. Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, although hurricanes can develop beyond those dates. The most likely time for Miami to be hit is during the peak of the Cape Verde season, which is mid-August through the end of September. Although tornadoes are uncommon in the Miami area, a tornado struck the city in 1925 and again in 1997. Miami falls under the USDA 10b Plant Hardiness zone. In addition to such annual festivals like Calle Ocho Festival and Carnaval Miami, Miami is home to many entertainment venues, theaters, museums, parks and performing arts centers. The newest addition to the Miami arts scene is the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, the second-largest performing arts center in the United States after the Lincoln Center in New York City, and is the home of the Florida Grand Opera. Within it are the Ziff Ballet Opera House, the center's largest venue, the Knight Concert Hall, the Carnival Studio Theater and the Peacock Rehearsal Studio. The center attracts many large-scale operas, ballets, concerts, and musicals from around the world and is Florida's grandest performing arts center.
USA: MIAMI: OPERA PORTRAYING PLIGHT OF CUBAN REFUGEES OPENS
Spanish/Eng/Nat
An opera which tries to portray the plight of Cuban refugees fleeing to the United States premiered in Miami on Friday.
The producers of Balseros were so moved by the stories of Cubans who made it to America that they wanted to show this piece of history through drama.
The premiere coincided with a flotilla of boats leaving Florida to demonstrate against the Cuban regime.
Balseros - Spanish for rafters - premiered at the Miami Beach Colony Theatre on Friday.
The opera is based on the real-life stories of Cubans who in 1994 took to rafts in order to leave their country and reach America.
Its producers say Balseros is not a politically-motivated drama, but a story of people seeking a new life.
But they cannot escape from the fact that - by implication - Fidel Castro's Cuba is shown as a place people want to flee from.
The plot was pieced together from the accounts of about 30 people who survived and made it to the U-S.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I wanted to be very faithful to the actual descriptions of the people who, the rafters whose tapes I had, and transcriptions, who told the stories about how they built their rafts and how they made the crossing
SUPER CAPTION: Maria Irene Fornes, Balseros librettist
The trip from Cuba to Florida is just 90 miles (145 kilometres) but the waters are treacherous.
Hundreds of rafters have disappeared in the Florida Straits.
A trickle of Cubans began making the trip on boats and homemade rafts in the late 1970s.
But in the summer of 1994, as economic conditions in Cuba declined, the trickle became a human tide.
No one knows how many perished - thousands were rescued each day by the U-S Coast Guard.
Only this week, nine Cubans were rescued after being marooned on a coral island for 15 days.
Three other members of the group are dead and another two missing.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It reinforces I think the tragic story and what made this a compelling story for us as we tried to find the right topic for an opera. It certainly was a dramatic connection.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Heuer, Director of Florida Grand Opera
Jorge del Rios was one of the rafters the production team spoke to about his experience.
He and five others left Cuba in August 1994.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
Supposedly no one in Cuba knew we were building a raft. But when we were about to leave, and we put the raft on top of a truck and take it to the coast, all our neighbours came out into the street. They gave us things. They gave us pictures of the Virgin Mary. They gave us everything they had in their hands for our journey.
SUPER CAPTION: Jorge del Rio, rafter
Onlookers inspected the replica rafts set outside the theatre.
The frail makeshift frames of the rafts make the refugees' survival incredible.

Cultural Charles Greenfield Florida Grand Opera Jorge Martin
Cultural Charles Greenfield presents an in depth discussion with the creator of the opera version of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas opera 'Before Night Falls'. Presented in South Florida in 2017.
Based on the famous memoir of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, Before Night Falls follows Arenas’ life from childhood poverty in the Cuban countryside to his emigration to the United States in the 1980 Mariel boatlift and his last decade in New York City.
The opera follows his trials and tribulations as a political prisoner disillusioned by the Cuban Revolution and persecuted by the Castro regime as a dissident writer and homosexual who was forced to smuggle his manuscripts abroad for publication.
In 2000, Before Night Falls was made into an award-winning feature film directed by Julian Schnabel and starring Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp.

Miami Midtown is the neighborhood just north of downtown Miami along Biscayne Boulevard. It is bounded by Biscayne Bay on the east and the Design District on the north. This neighborhood has undergone a major renaissance and explosive redevelopment. The change is being driven by the growing desire of people to leave the monotony of the suburbs (and the long commutes) and live in a vital, stimulating urban environment filled with interesting restaurants, live music venues, art galleries and walk-able streets.
Miami Midtown has been transformed into a gracious pedestrian promenade worthy of its name, with sculpted medians, paved sidewalks and abundant landscaping. The upcoming Museum Park (at the current Bicentennial Park site) will be a waterfront park with vast green spaces on a 29 acre site. It will also be the home of a new Museum of Science and Space Transit Planetarium and the new Miami Art Museum. As Miami's version of Central Park, it will rival the greatest public spaces of the world becoming a magnet for locals and visitors alike and transforming lower Biscayne Boulevard
Just north of the Museum Park, the new Performing Arts Center, which is the cultural focal point of Miami, is complete. It is a world-class venue including a 2,200 seat symphony hall, a 2,480 seat ballet opera house, a 200 seat studio theater and the new headquarters of the Florida Grand Opera. The center has become the nucleus of the arts and entertainment district, transforming South Florida into the cultural capital of the Americas.
The north end of the Miami Midtown Arts district is capped by the Design District, an 18 square block community overflowing with exciting interior design showrooms and stores, art studios and galleries, movie production and theatrical costume design companies and much more. The area's vast galleries can be explored during Gallery Night, the second Friday of each month.
With over twenty completed, under construction or planned projects in Miami Midtown coming online in the next several years, this under-utilized neighborhood will be completely renovated. According to CNN's Real Estate survey, this neighborhood, in the 33137 Zip code, is the most rapidly appreciating area of the United States.
With projects ranging from thirty residence loft buildings to 60-story high-rise smart buildings, there is a residence in the Miami Midtown for every pocketbook and lifestyle.

Samuel Eudovique - Niun mi tema - Miami Lyric Opera
Samuel J. Eudovique, Julius Littman Theater Miami Beach, Sept. 29, 2012
Samuel J. Eudovique was born on the island of Barbados in the West Indies. Due to his father's career as a minister of religion, he resided on several Caribbean islands before migrating to the United States of America where he attended high school and college in Miami, Florida.
His early exposure to classical music began with his grandmother who was an accomplished pianist. When just out of high school, he won a vocal competition and was hired to sing with the Palm Beach Opera Company and soon thereafter was also accepted into the Florida Grand Opera Apprentice Program.
As a gifted athlete, his early career sights seemed to be set on sports, however, because of his passion for music he decided to devote himself to his art and he has performed with the Palm Beach Opera, Opera Ebony, New York; Capitol City Opera, Atlanta; Opera Music Theatre International, New Jersey; Miami Opera Repertory; Coral Gables Symphony; North Miami Beach Symphony; Circolo Lyrico Del' Opera and Miami Lyric Opera.
At the suggestion and advice of the late Luciano Pavarotti and Nico Castel, Samuel auditioned for and won a scholarship which allowed him to attend Opera Music Theatre International (OMTI), a training program then under the direction of the late great Basso Jerome Hines. It is here he made the vocal transition from baritone to tenor. A summer session followed at the International School of Performing Arts in Philadelphia where he coached and performed in master classes for renowned artistes, Mignon Dunn, Maestro Kurt Klippstater, and Maestro Rescigno of the Florentine Opera in Italy. Mr. Charles Riecker of the Metropolitan Opera complimented the ringing shimmer and beauty of Mr. Eudovique's voice.
