Barbados - Welchman Hall Gully
Day 2 - Monday - Jan 28, 2019
On the second day we took the public bus out to Welchman Hall Gully. This was a very magical section of jungle set uniquely inside a collapsed cave. The temperature was nice and cool and all the birds and jungle sounds was very relaxing. Although a lot of things were planted there the setting seemed much more natural. The mixed up markings on the plants were really fun to find and identify, especially for a gardener like my husband.
From there we started to walk to Flower Forest (which is only 1.3 miles but man was the sun intense!) when 2 couples from Ohio picked us up. They hired a taxi to take them to each of the gardens and boy was that air conditioning nice! It was also nice to see other Americans! Lots of British people vacation there and apparently there was a cricket game between England and Barbados that brought in a lot spectators. We met some rowdy British men complaining about losing the game in front of a Chefette (local fast food joint) and let me tell you they LOVE their cricket just as much as Americans love their football, lol. They were a hoot really and their accent was so adorable!
Flower Forest was unique in that it was 53 acres of old sugar cane plantation situated on the side of a mountain so the views of the Atlantic were awesome. It also was much sunnier but still cool. It catered more towards flowering plants and had more of a garden feel than Welchman Hall Gully.
From Flower Forest we walked to Hunte's Garden and no magical taxis rescued us from this one; we walked the whole 1.9 miles to it. I have to say, as much as it was a pain lugging our large brimmed hats through the airports, they saved us a lot of burnt skin! This garden was situated in a huge sing hole. They really packed a lot in there with tons of little nooks with paths, chairs and benches, and garden statues. To top it off they had lovely classical music playing and at the end the owner himself made us some really great rum punches.
From there we went to Bathsheba...

Join us for a walk through of a cave in Grenade Hall Forest, #Barbados.
It's a good thing they put the sign at the END of the cave and not the beginning... watch the video, you'll see what we mean ????
Caves such as these were used by early Amerindian inhabitants of Barbados, especially for shelter during hurricanes.

Is there a Barbados zoo? No, actually we have something even better - a wildlife reserve!
The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is located in a natural mahogany wood across the road from the Farley Hill National Park in the northern parish of St. Peter.
Here you have a unique opportunity to stroll freely through the Reserve watching the animals at close range and in their own natural environment. There are few cages and the animals can be observed as they eat, play and interact with the other animals.
What types of animals will you spot here?
•The Barbados Green Monkeys are common and are especially popular at the afternoon feeding time. Note that the monkeys are free to leave the reserve and often do so during the day.
•Birds vary from colourful parrots, flamingoes and peacocks to brown pelicans and sparrows. The walk-through aviary is a special treat!
•Reptile lovers will appreciate the collection of snakes (these are in cages!), iguanas, turtles and tortoises.
•Non-native animals include the Brocket Deer, agouti, caiman (looks like an alligator) and armadillo.
This is a great Barbados attraction for the whole family, with children in particular having a wonderful time. Be sure to make a visit to the Wildlife Reserve part of your Barbados vacation.
Your entrance fee to the Barbados Wildlife Reserve also gains admission to the adjoining Grenade Hall Forest and Signal Station so be sure to head over there once you've completed your tour of the reserve.
