Mabry Mill was originally built by Edwin Boston Mabry (1867-1936). He began it in 1903 initially as a wheelwright and blacksmith shop, and eventually it became a saw mill and by then 1905 a gristmill. The gristmill was operated by Mr. Mabry until the 1930s.
Now, Mabry Mill is one of the most photographed places in the United States, not to mention one of the most popular attractions on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mill is run by the National Park Service, and along the grounds are walking trails with live exhibits during the summer and fall months which reflect various aspects of the pioneer mountain lifestyle. Exhibitors dress in the attire of the times. Demonstrations on local crafts, music, dancing, shoe making, soap making, running a whiskey still will have the visitor feel like they have just stepped back into time.
At the historic, operational water-powered grist mill visitors can see a demonstration of the milling process and can even purchase ground grits, buckwheat flour and cornmeal to take home. Of course, the preferred method is to enjoy these local delicacies prepared by the experts at the Mabry Mill Restaurant.
However, as interesting as it is to see how this pioneer milling process worked, it is probably the serene beauty of the mill location that draws people to this stop. Each year several hundred thousand visitors come to photograph the beautifully restored mill which sits by a picturesque pond and is framed by mountain foliage. Resident ducks add their touch to the soothing scene. It is no wonder that Mabry Mill shows up in more tourist photo remembrances that any other parkway destination.
A trip to Mabry Mill offers many intriguing exhibits that are sure to entertain visitors of all ages. Before leaving, be sure to visit Mabry Mills gift store to find that treasured handmade mountain craft.

Floyd County Real Estate - Tazwell Hollandsworth Dream Property
The Tazwell Hollandsworth Property in Floyd County Virginia is one of those unique pieces of real estate that only comes along once in a life time, and is truly something that has to be seen to be believed.
At just over 300 Acres, once you set foot on the property it is ALL YOURS. You would never have to see another person again unless you wanted to. A mile and a half long graveled road leads you to the home in the middle of the property. From there you can enjoy the big three, privacy, water, and views, in a setting where you wouldn't even know that there were any other people in the world.
It has already been divided into tracts ranging from 12 to 50 acres, and this division has already been approved by the Floyd County Planning Commission. If someone wanted to, it would be very easy to sell or gift these tracts to friends or family, knowing that each tract maintains complete privacy. Or, you could enjoy the property all by yourself.
There is only one entrance that a vehicle can access this property from, which is gated. This assures your privacy from unwanted visitors. It has also been paved very recently, and is a VDOT approved commercial entrance.
From here we travel along the mile and a half gravel road, which is nice enough that a sports car as low to the ground as a viper or corvette could easy travel on.
While this property is tucked away in the mountains and offers complete privacy, it also allows you the convenience of the outside world, if you choose. It is located in the county of Floyd, a small one stop light county that is big on culture. It features the Old Country Store, where people from all around the world flow out into the streets every Friday night to listen to old timey fiddle music. Floyd is also host to the nationally renowned FloydFest music festival. If you want to go out on a beautiful drive, then the BlueRidge Parkway runs through the county. Directly off of the parkway are local wineries such as the state renowned Chateau Morrisette, which hosts Jazz festivals bi-weekly during the warmer 6 months of the year.
This property is also less than an hour away from Virginia Tech, a top research university, who I also hear has a pretty good football team. And if the need arises, a major hospital in Radford is only 40 minutes away. Finally, if you did decide to travel elsewhere, both Interstate 81 and Interstate 77 are less than 40 minutes away.
There are many, many possible uses for this property. It could be called an upscale hunting preserve, with plenty of deer, turkey, and an abundance of other wildlife. In fact, it was on this property that I shot my first buck when I was a boy.
This property could also be used for people who want to live off the land and off the grid. For anyone interested in sustainable living, this would be the perfect property to be able to raise all of your own food, with gardens, orchards, and plenty of cleared fields for cattle, goats, or other livestock.
This property would also appeal to the survivalists out there, in case things got a little crazy out there, and having this property to go to would be of great piece of mind in case, well, it hits the fan. You could even build a runway here along the ridge.
Horse lovers (and their horses) would also love the Tazwell Hollandsworth property. Just imagine the experience you and your horses would have exploring this property.
It could also be used for hosting large events, such as music festivals, with all the privacy you could want, and the capacity to handle large numbers of people.
And finally, anyone with a group of families who wants a place for communal living would find this to be an optimal location. This is especially true since the property has already been divided into 12 tracts, each with complete privacy from the others, and with perfect building spots. You would have to look very hard to find another property that could accommodate so many families in such a perfect environment.
Or, it could just be your own private paradise, all to yourself. With the property of your dreams, you could build the perfect house for you, and enjoy the wonders of this property for a lifetime.

Something Once Sacred - The Mess at Floyd's Music Store
This is Something Once Sacred preforming their original song The Mess at Floyd's Music Store in Tallahassee Florida. Something Once Sacred decided to change their name from Sounds of Silence in February 2011 upon getting ready for their new CD release.
Something Once Sacred came to be back in the fall of 2002. They started out playing covers in the local bars and eventually took their act to Athens, GA. After a while they realized that people were more interested in hearing their original songs over the covers they were doing. They then started focusing on their own songs and became a strictly original band, playing the occasional cover for the unconverted S.O.S. fan in the crowd.
They won the Last Call Battle of the Bands in Athens, Ga two years in a row, beating out over 80 bands altogether. They eventually broke away from the Athens scene and began playing the entire southeastern United States. They went on to win the Kennesaw Battle of the Bands in 2006, and have participated in many other nationwide events including Emergenza, Bodog Battle of the Bands, Kenya RockFest, etc. They have shared the stage with many acclaimed national acts such as Puddle of Mudd, Finger Eleven, Saliva, Crossfade, and many other great national and indie bands.
Something Once Sacred mixes very personal and emotional lyrics with their eruptive and melodic music to create something that can only be described as Something Once Sacred. Past experiences, relationships, lost loved ones, and hope for something more are just a few of the topics of which they use to reach their listeners. They continue to thrive in the southeastern music scene, bringing a fresh breath of rock and roll air to a country where real rock music has been put on the back burner for some time now. If you're into melodic, in your face, rock and roll music then Something Once Sacred is what you've been looking for.
