Flumin' Kohala Tour - Big Island
One of my favorite experiences in the Big Island (Hawaii). It is located up north of the island and has the best tour guides who actually grew up in the area. You can tell how much they love their community and how they maintain the area. It is awe-inspiring.
The town built flumes that they use to transport water to another town that needs it. They hired japanese workers to build the tunnels, you can see some writing on the walls.
There were about 9 tunnels, some are long and some are short. There are some parts that have water but it is not so bad. The water is not so deep, it is about 3 feet. It was raining when we went, so bring a raincoat, it helps you from getting too cold.
All in all, WE LOVE THIS TOUR!!!
Flumin' da Ditch in and out of a tunnel. The Kohala Ditch Adventures tour. Big Island, Hawaii
This is a cool video of a small part of a tour called Flumin da Ditch in Kohala, Hawaii. The ditch is the Kohala Ditch, the irrigation system that sugar plantations in the area used to direct water from the lush valleys to the arid plains where their crops were planted. Stretching 22.5 miles, the system included 57 tunnels, 19 flumes and six miles of open ditches.
The Kohala Ditch Adventures tour glided past pristine rain forests, over spectacular ravines and waterfalls and through long, dark tunnels along a scenic 2.5 mile portion of the Kohala Ditch. This short video is us going in to a small tunnel and then out the other side. We stopped on the other side to view a small waterfall. This tour is a ton of fun. I would suggest it to anyone that wants to see a little known part of the Big Island in Hawaii.

Driving to Upolu Point, Northernmost Tip of Hawaii Island
5:39 p.m.: Continuing the tour of the North Kohala District of Hawaii Island, I’m now heading to Upolu Point, northernmost tip of the island, not far from the Hawaii 250/270 junction.
I turn right onto Upolu Airport Road and drive two miles to the tip on a one-lane road with cows grazing nearby. When I reach Upolu Airport, I start on a one-lane dirt track along the perimeter fence toward Upolu Point but it’s not passable, so I back up to the airport parking lot.
