Bruny Island and Fluted Cape
A recent trip to Bruny Island. We usually paddle our sea kayaks to Bruny Island but this time we took the ferry, flew the quadcopter and did some walking to the top of Fluted Cape. Although easier than paddling we still had some dramas as Roger found out.
The improved lookout at the Neck was popular.
Fluted Cape Circuit
Fluted Cape is one of many good walks on Bruny Island, Tasmania. It's a 2-3 hour circuit which encompasses some great views, some fascinating history and some excellent coastal scenery. The track is of good quality; it could easily be done in runners.

Cape Queen Elizabeth Walk
This walk on Bruny Island is in my opinion, one of the best walks the island has to offer. There is a fantastic beach with some marvellous rock formations, great coastal views from the Cape itself, and great birdlife. It is well worth a visit (although don't all go at once!)

Hiking Cape Hauy and Cape Raoul in Tasmania
Me and a few friends used our time during the late summer in Tasmania to do some days of hiking.
The nature in Tasmania is absolut awesome and beautiful.
Putangirua Pinnacles, Wellington Region, New Zealand
The Putangirua Pinnacles -also known colloquially simply as The Pinnacles- as a geological formation are one of New Zealand's best examples of badlands erosion and consist of a large number of earth pillars or Hoodoos located at the head of a valley in the Aorangi Ranges. 7 to 9 million years ago when sea levels were much higher, the Aorangi ranges were an island and as this landmass was eroded over time, large alluvial fans formed on its southern shores.
Within a few million years however, sea levels rose again and this island was submerged also. Since the Ice ages, sea levels have receded and the old alluvial fans have been exposed to the erosive forces of wind and water, which have weathered away the conglomerate.
In some places this conglomerate is protected from erosion above by a cap of cemented silt or rock, resulting in the formation of spectacular Pinnacles, many of which have prominent fluting caused by rainwater running down their sides during major storms.
It is not known exactly how long the pinnacles have been forming but they are thought to be less than 125,000 years old with major erosion probably beginning 7000 years ago and accelerating in the last 1000 years with the deforestation of the area.
Part of the Paths of the Dead sequence in the film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was filmed on location here, as was the opening sequence of Braindead.

Ep 8 Part II Bruny Island, Tasmania
Riding to Adventure Bay and hiking the spectacular Fluted Cape Track. Beautiful sunset at the Neck lookout.
Bruny Island Environmental Cruise Tour
The Environmental Cruise takes you on the Albatross, Storm Petrel or Shearwater out of the historic and beautiful Adventure Bay, around Fluted Cape to cruise alongside Australia's highest sea cliffs (250 to 300 metres). The coastline of the South Bruny Island National Park is a remote and wonderful place, You cruise beneath towering crags with spectacular sculptured features, drift up close to 'breathing' rock, enter deep sea caves, zoom between the coast and Monument rock, and feel the power of the Southern Ocean where it collides with the Tasman Sea. You'll be kept busy watching native sea life, wildlife and seabirds. This trip is not just Tasmania's best, but simply one of the world's best environmental travel experiences.
Bruny Island Best Bits and Must Dos
Our next leg of Tasmania leads us on to Bruny Island!!
We needed to stock up on supplies before heading over to Bruny, so we headed back to the town of Huon to do a big shop????. With the fridges overflowing, enough beer to last 3 weeks and both jerry cans full of fuel, we headed off. I'm not sure why we went crazy stocking up, as we only planned to stay 3-5nights max on Bruny. ????
It was pretty late in the afternoon and bad weather⛈ predicted to set in, so we stayed the night at Gordon, before catching the ferry the next day. That night at Gordon, the winds got up to 50knots, so we awoke in the middle of the night and had to activate 'midget mode' - pop our van down⬇️. It was quite funny to watch, as we popped one side down and raced to pop the other down, the popped down side would then pop back up, due to the force of the wind????, so it took us a few goes to get both sides down and locked down. ????
The skies cleared and the wind had dropped the next day, so off to the Bruny Island ferry terminal⛴ we went. We got our tickets ($70 return) and waited in line for the next ferry. Its only a short trip and then onto the island to start exploring. Camp spots are limited if you have a dog, so we chose to stay at the Hotel Bruny for our stay. Plus we splurged out to get power for our 4 nights stay. The weather was pretty hit and miss, so when the sun☀️ shone we tried to see the sights and when it rained alot????, we took cover in our van.
We did get to see and do everything we wanted over our 5 days on the island. Got our food fix by visiting get shucked oysters, the Bruny Cheese factory????, Bruny Chocolate factory, Bruny berry farm and had dinner at the hotel. All the food we had was super delicious! We also managed to tour the north island, as well as sight see the south island. Visiting the Bruny island lighthouse, adventure bay, cloudy bay & the neck. We completed the trek????????♀️???????? around the Fluted Cape Trail, one afternoon, which was great and on our drive back to camp after the walk we spotted 2 of the allusive pure white wallabies! ????
Kurt being the mad keen fisherman had heard you can catch squid off the adventure bay jetty, so we spent 4 hours there one day, where he managed to catch 3 decent sized ones! His first squid catches on the trip, so he was stoked????????. We crumbed them up and he had them for dinner that night - delicious! We were tossing up whether to do the popular Bruny Island ferry cruise, as the weather was so unpredictable. It looked promising for our last day on Bruny, so we bit the bullet and booked ourselves into the afternoon cruise????! Highly recommend to do it if you have the time and weather permits.
Well if we had more sunshine we could of stayed on Bruny a while longer, but hey the show must go on! We still have the whole east coast of Tassie to see!
