Fly DC3 Over Auckland
Scenes from the cockpit of the Fly DC3 Douglas C-47 Dakota ZK-DAK as we flew over the volcanic Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland, New Zealand, and then turn and head over the North Shore towards the Auckland city and harbour bridge. The aircraft's captain, left in the footage, is Geoff Cooper, and the first officer is Brooke Mackley. This was filmed during a Sunday Scenic flight from Ardmore Airport, Auckland on the 11th of May 2014. You too can fly in this wonderful old aeroplane. Go to flydc3.co.nz

Douglas DC-3 - Auckland Scenic Flight - Ardmore Airport
On the 18th of April, I was lucky enough to be taken on a scenic flight in a DC-3 over the city I call home, Auckland. It left from Ardmore and headed East up the coast. We buzzed past Waiheke Island, Rangitoto Island and then did a loop of the CBD. We then headed West towards Auckland International Airport before touching back down at Ardmore. When we arrived back, we got a special ride in the DC-3, our own private taxi back to its resting place!

Final Backyard Plane Spotting ✈ Auckland, New Zealand
Hey guys! Been a long time since my last video!
A lot has happened. A lot of good stuff has happened. For sure.
One of the things that's been a major change in our lives; we moved house!
We don't live under the flight path of Auckland Airport anymore.
But, we did move to an area close to Ardmore Airport - with classic aircraft like the Mustang, Tiger Moth, Harvard, DC3 and many more now flying low over our house. Sometimes in a formation and always with an amazing sound!
So, the backyard plane spotting series will definitely continue! Albeit it different.
(Info:
And to be honest - it was time for a change. Believe it or not, but after a while, even a Boeing 777 or an A380 becomes boring when they fly over your house every ten minutes.
We might still go out to Auckland Airport every now and then, especially seeing as summer is around the corner. But life's pretty busy with a work, a big house with a big backyard and an other fast growing Youtube channel on the side -
I hope you enjoy this final Backyard Plane Spotting video, recorded in the week before we moved on the 9th of October.

DC-3 Landing - Auckland NZ
This particular aircraft (c/n 26480, s/n 43-49219) was manufactured as a C-47B by Douglas Aircraft, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and delivered to the USAAF on October 30, 1944. During World War 2 it served with various USAAF Units and Squadrons in the Continental United States before being converted to a C-47D on June 30, 1946. During the Korean war it was based in Japan before being transferred to the Philippines and then back to Japan.
Following decommissioning in April 1959 it was registered as PI-C486 and used by the Philippines Airlines on their first international service from Manila to Hong Kong. It was then sold to PATAIR in New Guinea before appearing on the Australian register 1970 as VH-PNM flying for Bush Pilot Airlines and Queensland Airlines. In 1983 it was retired to the Mackay Air Museum, reregistered VH-SBT and flew as Gooney Bird Tours in Northern Queensland before being retired as a static exhibit.
Finally, in 1987, it was purchased by a New Zealand Warbird's group, reregistered ZK-DAK and underwent an extensive rebuild.
