Rotterdam, The Netherlands - A Tour Of The Dutch City
A tour of the Dutch city of #Rotterdam with our guide Hassan Hidare from Rotterdam pages.
???????? Where we stayed in Rotterdam -
Rotterdam, South Holland in the Netherlands is only 25 minutes by train from Schiphol Airport and really easy to reach.
Unlike Amsterdam, the port city of Rotterdam was almost completely destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing during World War II. During the post war reconstruction Rotterdam became known for its groundbreaking architecture.
These building include the 1970’s cube houses designed by architect Piet Blom and the Pauluskerk. One of the old building which survived the war was the Witte Huis or ‘White House’ built in 1898 and was one Europe’s first skyscraper.
As well as the architecture, you can get great food from one of the 100 stalls at the impressive Markthal and you must visit some of the bars on the popular Witte de Withstraat.
So instead of just staying in Amsterdam when visiting the Netherlands you must take a trip to the far less crowded Rotterdam

Gateway to Europe Rotterdam-The Netherlands:
Rotterdam is the second-largest city and a municipality of the Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland, at the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas channel leading into the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta at the North Sea. Its history goes back to 1270, when a dam was constructed in the Rotte, after which people settled around it for safety. In 1340, Rotterdam was granted city rights by the Count of Holland.
A major logistic and economic centre, Rotterdam is Europe's largest port. It has a population of 633,471 Rotterdam is known for its Erasmus University, its riverside setting, lively cultural life and maritime heritage.
Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe, with the rivers Meuse and Rhine providing excellent access to the hinterland upstream reaching to Basel, Switzerland and into France. In 2004 Shanghai took over as the world's busiest port. In 2006, Rotterdam was the world's seventh largest container port in terms of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) handled.
The port's main activities are petrochemical industries and general cargo handling and transshipment. The harbour functions as an important transit point for bulk materials between the European continent and overseas. From Rotterdam goods are transported by ship, river barge, train or road. In 2007, the Betuweroute, a new fast freight railway from Rotterdam to Germany, was completed.
The extensive distribution system including rail, roads, and waterways have earned Rotterdam the nicknames Gateway to Europe and Gateway to the World
'Rotterdam' is divided into a northern and a southern part by the river Nieuwe Maas, connected by (from west to east): the Beneluxtunnel; the Maastunnel; the Erasmusbrug ('Erasmus Bridge'); a subway tunnel; the Willemsspoortunnel ('Willems railway tunnel'); the Willemsbrug ('Willems Bridge'); the Koninginnebrug ('Queen's Bridge'); and the Van Brienenoordbrug ('Van Brienenoord Bridge'). The former railway lift bridge De Hef ('the Lift') is preserved as a monument in lifted position between the Noordereiland ('North Island') and the south of Rotterdam.

From The Netherlands to Italy by car - Roadtrip with Pilot Lindy VLOG #58
// H E L L O !
As I drove my car to Holland last week for the yearly revision, I went this week with Diego to Amsterdam to pick the car up and spend time with my family! We flew to Amsterdam via Naples and enjoyed a lovely day in Amsterdam and Friesland in the North! We then drove via Lelystad Airport (gotta watch some planes once in a while!) towards Strasbourg, where we slept at my friend Ruben's place.
The next day, the journey continued via Germany and Switzerland to Italy, where we dropped off the car at the boat and we took a plane back to Palermo as we didn't feel like spending 20+ hours on the ferry!
I really hope you enjoy the views of my home country and en-route to Italy throughout Europe!
Happy watching!

View from Above- Netherlands
Welcome to the View from Above! A series where we take you on a Journey to some of the most beautiful places on earth!
Netherlands can be called the heart of Northern Europe. Flanked by Germany and Belgium, and sharing maritime borders with England, this small state is truly in the middle of European affairs. But, instead of conforming, Netherlands stands out and surprises all visitors with its unique traditions and customs. Its beautiful landscapes and architecture are adequately represented by an equally beautiful people. Transport yourself to the unique confines of Amsterdam, then to the dams and levees of Zeeland, before zooming above the blaze of colourful flowers in the Dutch countryside. View From Above captures Netherlands and its people by using cutting-edge DJI unmanned recreational drones, taking shots of the charming country in ways that have never been seen before.
Netherlands, literally meaning “Lower Lands” in reference to the country’s height in relation to sea-level, has been home to a number of cultures and traditions. Ancient Germanic and Roman influence made way for Norman expansion. Norman rule was overthrown by the expanding Holy Roman Empire commandeered by Frankish princes, and the Franks made way for the Burgundian and Hapsburg kings who later became the dukes of Dutch estates. These dukes and princes later formed a union of sorts that was coordinated in The Hague, and thus began the golden age for the Dutch, who controlled a vast sum of wealth thanks to their great banking and trading empires.
Netherlands, sometimes known by its historic name ‘Holland’, has its history of wealth and trade invested in its capital of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a web of canals and little streets of which a multitude of different people call home. The city is a treasure trove of hidden jewels but the travelling enthusiast should definitely tick the more well known attractions like Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and the Red Light District off their list. If visitors are looking for a more modern Dutch city, then a visit to Rotterdam is recommended, but it’s in The Hague and Utrecht where visitors can be treated to more classical Dutch architecture and lifestyle.
The Netherlands has always been known to be vertically challenged. The country does not rise much unless you travel to the far south and west, and for this reason they suffer from frequent flooding. With rising sea levels, Netherlands has needed to implement mechanisms that prevent the seas from completely submerging low lying farmlands and towns. A trip to the world renown Delta Works around Zeeland region will have every visitor marvelling at Netherland’s technical and mechanical expertise. A vast system of levees, locks, sluices, dams and tide-activated barriers stop the oceans slow advance.
Netherland’s lowlands are dotted with little towns and villages making their livelihoods in and amongst the damp waterways and canals. A trip to Engewormer, the marshy area north of Amsterdam, is a favourite walking and cycling destination where visitors can experience the birdlife and appealing Netherlands countryside. These kind of areas are home to Netherlands’ iconic windmills which have been pumping water off the scarce dry fields for generations. Towns closer to the coast, like that of Hellevoetsluis, have their beginnings entrenched in their watery surroundings. These cities in the mouths of canals are popular destinations for sailing and other water-sports.
Netherlands is known to be a great exporter of flowers, and the gem of their flower trade is the Keukenhof gardens where flower producers have been allowed to pageant their tulip and bulb blooms for decades.
Netherlands is a beauty that is a must-visit for anyone travelling to Europe.
View from Above could not have made these astonishing videos without the help of the DJI unmanned recreational drones. Witness these marvellous feats of modern technology on the website:

Rotterdam is world famous mainly because of the port, but in the last decade Rotterdam has grown into a bustling but welcoming metropole. Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands with 600.000 inhabitants and 1.200.000 in greater Rotterdam.
Rotterdam is famous for its festivals , offers a great nightlife, and has lot of shops which are open 7 days a week! In addition, Rotterdam is well known for its modern architecture which you can find throughout the city. The Erasmus Bridge and the Cube houses are great examples of this modern industrial design. All sights in Rotterdam can be reached by means of the quick and cheap public transport system.
Rotterdam is also home to a big aquarium in the Rotterdam Zoo, the Euromast panorama tower, the antique Steamship ss Rotterdam and Spido harbour tours. The harbour city also offers world class museums like Boijmans - Van Beuningen and the World Arts Museum. Most attractions have special facilities for kids as well.
Rotterdam is world famous for its modern architecture which you can find anywhere within the city. Rotterdam is thus home to many design museums and leading architectural firms which are involved in the design of famous buildings and bridges in major cities around the globe. Rotterdam is constantly working on ambitious new architectural projects in and around the city to remain the number one city of modern architecture. This vibrant city is constantly changing and you can feel and see these changes all around.
Once you leave the Central Station you will understand why Rotterdam is called the Dutch capital of modern architecture. The brand new Rotterdam Central Station is an architectural highlight and the Millennium Tower opposite to Rotterdam Central Station has the looks of the Empire State building in New York. The Delftse Poort building hast been the tallest office building in the Netherlands for a decade, but it has been surpassed by the impressive Maas Tower. In 2020, the impressive Zalmhaven Tower, will take the lead in the race of the tallest building of the Netherlands. This 215-meter tall residential skyscraper is located in the Maritime Quarters of Rotterdam. In the heart of Rotterdam city centre you can't miss the extraordinary Cube Houses and the Market Hall. The Brug (Bridge) office building is another architectural highlight of Rotterdam, because it is built at a height of 25 meters above an existing historic plant. The Shipping and Transport College is located in a stunning periscope shaped building! And don't forget to visit the UNESCO site Van Nelle Factory.
Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk. Cycling is key to the city’s character, and there are numerous bike paths.
Museums are the main tourist attraction in Amsterdam. Everyone knows the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum, but there is much more. Amsterdam has over seventy museums which attract millions of visitors each year.
Coffeeshops in Holland are allowed to sell small amounts of cannabis and are strictly regulated and taxed. Furthermore, coffeeshops must not sell to anyone under 18 and they must not sell more than 5g to any customer. Hard drugs are strictly prohibited.
