Amsterdam In Your Pocket - Chinatown (Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple)
Amsterdam's Chinatown is one of the most vibrant you'll find on the continent and it's also home to the largest Buddhist temple in Europe, which is impossible to miss. While trying to pick a good Chinese restaurant on the Zeedijk, why not take a quick peek at the Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple, but make sure to enter via one of the smaller side gates as the main gate is reserved for nuns and monks. Inside you'll find a lavish interior with a statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and a shrine dedicated to the Buddha. Although the style of the building is completely Chinese, anyone is allowed to worship here and various events and celebrations are held throughout the year.

This video is about the Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple located at the Zeedijk in the Old City Center of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Venerable Shih Man Jung tells us the history of the temple that is build on a former playground for children. Marian van de Veen - van Rijk shows us beautiful photographs she made of that place where great wall paintings were. After the opening of the temple by Queen Beatrix in 2000 she and photographer Eveline Renaud followed and photographed many events in the temple. An exhibition was in 2016. We also attend the celebration 2016 of the birthday of the Buddha at the Nieuwmarkt in the medieval centre of Amsterdam.

FGS He Hua Temple Zeedijk Amsterdam
The Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple at the Zeedijk in Amsterdam. It is the largest temple in Europe that has been built in traditional Chinese palace-styl. The atmosphere of the temple is Chinese, however Buddhism and practicing Buddhism are both universal and beyond architectural features and culture.
What to do in Amsterdam China Town
The Nieuwmarkt and a large part of the Zeedijk form the heart of Chinatown. The first Chinese arrived in The Netherlands around 1910. They worked as coal stokers on large Dutch steamships.
Besides the cafés and restaurants, all kind of Eastern companies, such as herb shops and toko's, the most important tourist sight within Amsterdam’s Chinatown is the Zeedijk Buddhist temple, known as Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple.
Amsterdam Chinatown is unique because of all the different nationalities that are located in Chinatown as well, you won't find such a multicultural Chinatown anywhere in the world.
Amsterdam Chinatown is just a few streets away from the Red Light District.
This video shows the following streets: Nieuwmarkt, Zeedijk, Geldersekade, Oudezijds Achterburgwal and alleys between China town and the Red Light District.
Until next time and I hope you will enjoy the video.

Amsterdam. Fo Guang Shan – fejring af Buddhas oplysning januar 2014
Optagelserne knytter sig til tekst 62 i bogen
Kinesisk religion (E. Andreasen & K.B. Nielsen), en tekst som også findes på hjemmesiden kinesiskreligion.dk
Rækkefølgen i scenerne følger teksten, men videoen dækker

Amsterdam In Your Pocket - Flower Market (Bloemenmarkt)
The Flower Market is a tourist attraction and a functioning market in one. Although it's often called the world's only floating flower market, most of the browsing takes place on dry land as the stalls are located on barges moored on the Singel and although it's quite attractive when walking past, it's actually a bit of an eyesore when viewed from the other side of the canal. You can buy bulbs and seeds for all kinds of plants and flowers and we have to admit that we've also picked up a Venus flytrap kit here, which was a huge hit with kids at home. The sellers will also send bulbs to your home address abroad and they know which countries don't allow the importation of plant materials, so you don't have to worry about having your purchase confiscated at customs. Locals also buy flowers here so the prices are actually quite reasonable. There are plenty of cafés and souvenir shops opposite the market.

Outside the Chinese Temple on the Zeedijk, the dragon dances in the new year and sets off bangers and fire works to remove the bad spirits, or at least clear a path through the tourists and their mobile phones.
