Multicultural Arts Victoria will present Fandata, a solo show of new works by Cape Verdean artist Mito Elias from 4 August to 12 September 2014 at Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery.
The exhibition will feature a series of new mixed media paintings - an implosion of watercolour and collage of writing spanning Creole oral fables to contemporary sayings.
The works seek to explore the effect of immigration on language and how its form has adapted through cross-cultural journeys and through his own experience across diasporas.
Immigration forces an almost constant verification upon us in our search for our identity and for a way to relate to our host culture.
Our mother tongue will always serve as our shelter and our inner voice. I seek to capture this ‘poesis mutantis’ [changed poetry] through light and sound. Mito Elias, artist.
Fandata
Fandata translates as to search for in Cape Verdean Creole and it is believed that it evolved from the English words, to find out.
Mito Elias’s works explore the journey of colloquial Creole through correspondence between early Cape Verdean immigrants in the United States of America to Cape Verde’s main land, Santiago.
Mito Elias employs traditional calligraphy from different cultures across his works, that he cherishes as sacred pieces of cultural history.
Through the collage and imagery in his works, Mito Elias intends to distil the dimension of survival translated by fan data.

Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Overlapping Spaces,María Peña
Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Overlapping Spaces,María Peña Antena Hispana is a non- for profit Production Company that produces television programs in SpanishThe exhibition Overlapping Spaces, by Maria Pena, will offer a unique insight into the artistic practice of the contemporary Latin-American diaspora.
Overlapping Spaces is a series of paintings composed by remembrances of different spaces and narratives between the artist's home country Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Australia. The spaces extend and unfold with the intention to evoke a corporeal memory. Human presences or absent presences appear in the spaces as snippets of fabrics, clothes and silhouettes.
'Overlapping Spaces attempts to articulate memory as a displacement of the past into the present, offering traces for remembering and imagining a new re-constructed home and identity,' says Maria Pena.
Maria Pena's artistic career spans thirteen years and she is currently practicing and living in Melbourne. In 2004, after graduating in Fine Arts at the Academia Superior de Artes in her hometown of Bogota, Colombia, Maria furthered her arts research at RMIT with a focus on Latin-American diaspora. She continues to incorporate these themes in her studio work with oil painting and fabrics. To date, she has exhibited in over twenty solo and group exhibitions in Bogota, Mexico and Melbourne.
Overlapping Spaces is the latest in a series of exhibitions that have been presented in partnership between Multicultural Arts Victoria and the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery. This partnership provides opportunities for artists and communities from culturally diverse backgrounds to develop professionally and to share their heritage or contemporary artistic expression with the wider community.

Artist: Peter Kennedy
Here is a short documentary we were commissioned to make for the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Now Exhibition.
This video looks at the artist Peter Kennedy and his project for Melbourne Now. Peter Kennedy first exhibited neon light works in 1970 as part of his conceptual and multidisciplinary art practice. For Melbourne Now Kennedy is creating his largest neon light work, drawing on his own lineage of light works and incorporating recent developments in particle physics, including an equation that makes use of the groundbreaking discovery in 2013 of the Higgs boson or 'God' particle.
Born 1945, Brisbane, Queensland; lives and works in Melbourne. Peter Kennedy was a founding member of Inhibodress, an artist-run space in Sydney (1970--72) and was the director of the University of Sydney Art Workshop (The Tin Sheds) from 1980 to 1985. In 2002 the Ian Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne held a retrospective survey of his work, Peter Kennedy: Selected Works 1970--2002. His solo exhibition Peter Kennedy: Light Years 1970--71 was presented at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, in 2011. In recent years, Kennedy has featured extensively in group exhibitions at the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, and the National Gallery of Victoria, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne.

Benten X Live @ Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne, Australia (2007)
Improvisation: Conversation 3
Both performers, classically trained, draw on an immense theoretical and performance repertoire to take audiences on a shared journey with their improvised cinematic soundscapes.
They devise scales or modes upon which their improvisations take form. These scales or modes are neither classical nor jazz based, but rather lie beyond the orthodox musical compositional framework, and which are defined by the lever-based tuning mechanism of the electric harp.
Benten X features Benjamin Skepper on violoncello and Xanya Mamunya on electric harp.
