Globalization, Mass Migration and Inequality: Further Thoughts on Education in the Age of Vertigo
Marcelo Suárez-Orozco is the Wasserman Dean & Distinguished Professor of Education at UCLA's Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences where he leads two academic departments, 16 research institutes, and two demonstration schools. His research primarily focuses on conceptual and empirical problems in the areas of cultural psychology and psychological anthropology with an emphasis on mass migration, globalization, and education. In 2012, he founded the Institute for Immigrant Children, Youth, and Families at UCLA, which he co-directs.
Suárez-Orozco is an award-winning writer whose books are widely published by major university presses including Harvard, U.C., and NYU Presses. His scholarly papers range in discipline and languages and appear in major journals in the U.S. and around the world. An engaged public intellectual, Suárez-Orozco is a regular contributor to national and international media outlets where he often comments on Latino, immigrant families and children, and assimilation and education issues.
In 2004, Suárez-Orozco was elected to the National Academy of Education, and in 2006, he was awarded the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico’s highest honor to a foreign national. He served as special advisor for education, peace, and justice to the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. He authored briefs for the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Pope Francis' main scientific advisory board. In 2014 Suárez-Orozco was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and appointed as the inaugural Wasserman Dean of Education & Information Studies.
A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Suárez-Orozco earned his A.B. in psychology, M.A. in anthropology, and Ph.D. in anthropology at U.C. Berkeley. At Harvard University, he served as the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Education and Culture (2001-2004), and co-founded and co-directed the Harvard Immigration Project in 1997. Prior to arriving at UCLA, Suárez-Orozco was the inaugural Courtney Sale Ross University Professor of Globalization and Education at NYU.

Pomona's Daring Minds: James Turrell '65 and E.C. Krupp '66 in Conversation
James Turrell’s engagement with perceptual revelation has transformed him into a world-renowned artist who demonstrates — through a crafted experience of light — the interaction among the eye, the brain and the world. Commanding, often monumental, his work is leveraged by the extravagance of thought of a daring mind. In this conversation with E.C. Krupp, a Pomona College friend, he offers some reflections on the places, the people, the processes, the instruments, the icons and the experiences that encouraged and gave meaning to his work.
Kathryn Matthews – Save the Oceans, Feed the World
Kathryn Matthews, Ph.D., is the chief scientist for Oceana, the largest international advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans. She is responsible for ensuring that Oceana’s advocacy is informed by the best and most current scientific understanding, as well as tracking emerging issues, advising on strategic direction, and supporting the nearly 50 staff scientists across the organization.
Her varied work environments have included Arctic ice caps, Capitol Hill, international treaty negotiations, and the waters of the eastern tropical Pacific. After 10 years in research, she returned to Washington DC, her hometown, to work as a legislative fellow in the U.S. Congress and then for the Office of Marine Conservation in the U.S. State Department. Katie continued her science-based policy work with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation and then with The Pew Charitable Trusts, where she ran a marine conservation and sustainable fisheries grantmaking program. She also serves on the Society for Conservation Biology’s Board of Governors, heading its Marine Section’s board of directors as president (2017-2019).
Matthews has an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in Earth and Environmental Science.

2018 Public Health Ethics Forum, Part 1
The 2018 Public Health Ethics Forum focused on minority elders and healthy aging. The National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University and the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) host this annual event. This year's forum explores the changing demographics and health status of minority elders as well as the biological, social, and cultural factors that impact healthy aging.
