MOST CHARMING CITY IN EUROPE? (BRUGES, BELGIUM TOUR) | Eileen Aldis
Bruges, Belgium might just be the most charming city in Europe. If you closed your eyes and imagined a picturesque, fairytale, travel-back-in-time, absolutely breath-taking European city I'd guess that Bruges is pretty close to what's in your head. It's what European vacation dreams are made of. A veritable time capsule of medieval architecture, It's easy to understand why it's a UNESCO World Heritage City. It is rare to see so many streets of buildings all so well preserved. Walking around is like being transported back in time and history here is on another level. This town hall? It was the seat of government for more than six hundred years. This old hospital? It's been a hospital since the 1100s (and only stopped in the 1970s). The reason why Bruges is so well preserved has a twist: the city was too poor to renovate and rebuild. Bruges has experienced periods of great wealth, great poverty, and great wealth. During the down times, citizens didn't have the cash to make 'improvements' to their houses and to this scarcity we owe a great deal! Ironically, the current citizens of Bruges benefit from their forebears' inability to knock things down and rebuild. Bruges is now a huge draw for tourists from around the world who flock to see the same buildings people were too poor to change. Huzzah! This is why I love history!
Our day in Bruges started at the Folklore Museum. It's only 4 Euro and you can get a nice overview of life in the city in the 19th and 20th centuries. Don't forget to look for the black cat who lives there. He's rare to see and is one of a long line of black cats who call the museum home. We then walked (you can walk everywhere) to the Burg Square where you'll find the Stadhuis (town hall) and a little further on is the Grote Markt. The latter is the main square where you'll find see the Belfry (Belfort) and dozens of tourists. Bruges is known for two things: an abundance of beauty and an abundance of tourists seeking it. But no one cares because you're so stunned at the charming city around you. We walked on to the Church of Our Lady where the altar piece is a Michelangelo sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Made of Carrara marble, it's been stolen twice and is now safe again to view at the church. Across the street is Sint-Janshospitaal - the one that was a hospital from the 1100s to the 1970s. Now you'll find religious art and - my favourite - examples of old ambulances. A visit here makes you really appreciate modern medicine. It started to rain and we were getting hungry so we headed to the Friet Museum (Fry Museum). How could we visit Belgium without doing a deep dive into the history of fries?! We wanted to find out why so many people mistakenly call them 'French fries' - we also wanted to eat fries. Check and check. It stopped raining so we ended the Bruges tour by boarding a river cruise because there are parts of the city only visible from the water. I'd definitely recommend a boat ride if you're visiting Bruges - it's relaxing and offers a unique perspective not seen by other means. We absolutely loved visiting Bruges and hope you enjoyed this visit to the jewel of Belgium.

( English Version) wonderful trip to Lithuania , Nida and Hill of Witches
Nida is a tranquil fishing village and the biggest settlement on the beautiful Curonian Spit on the Lithuanian coast. This peacefully breezy and soul soothing resort is a popular destination amongst the local nature lovers and international visitors alike looking for some downtime.Due to its historic ties with Germany, Nida is an attractive place for German visitors.
The spectacular strip of land also known as Neringa is a national treasure with drifting white sand dunes, deep blue waters, evergreen forests and distinctive architecture.Nida is a one of a kind tranquil oasis surrounded by nature. It’s a place for those who love to stay outdoors, go on hikes, bike, kayak or sail away to the open waters of the Baltic Sea.To reach the tallest moving sand dune in Europe head south of the town and climb the 180 steps to reach the top but don’t stray away from the footpath. The viewing platform opens up into the never-ending nature reserve of the ‘Dead Dunes’. Feast your eyes on the lagoon from one side and the Baltic Coast on the other, separated by the beautiful pine tree forest.Even if you are not a romantic, I highly recommend coming here for both the sunrise and the sunset. This is the only place in Lithuania where the sun rises from the water and then sinks back down into the water.
The Hill of Witches is a unique museum of wooden sculptures, where devils, witches and other characters of folklore reign supreme, revealing to visitors the natural and mystical spirit of the place. Most of the sculptures of the Hill of Witches are placed around the scenic Fir Valley Since the late 19th century, this valley, which is a natural amphitheatre of the forest formed by parabolic dunes, and the Hill of Eve used to attract crowds of Lithuanians from the other side of the lagoon on Midsummer Day to pray in the mystical atmosphere and visit the popular resort of Juodkrantė. This tradition was particularly popular before the First World War, but also continued in the interwar period.Assembled from all over Lithuania in 1979, the authors of sculptures of the Hill of Witches, wood carvers and blacksmiths, were inspired by the beauty of the landscape and mystical atmosphere of the parabolic dune slopes overgrown with centenary pine and fir trees that gave an impetus to embody the characters of fairy tales and legends in wood.Today, the exposition of wooden sculptures on the Hill of Witches in Juodkrantė is among the most visited tourist attractions in Neringa.

Youghal Lace - Faces behind the Lace
Youghal Lace - The Faces behind the Lace
This short film brings you inside the lace making rooms at the Presentation Convent Youghal, Co. Cork and shows the incredible detailed work by the women and children in making the Youghal lace. It was a time just after The Great Hunger - The Irish Famine - A period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1849. The evocative images and music brings you back to that time and puts a face to those women and children who created the lace in that traumatic time in Irish history.
- During the Great Hunger (Irish Famine) of the mid-1800’s, a piece of Italian lace was unraveled by a nun, Mother Mary Ann Smith of Presentation Convent, Youghal, and carefully examined until the stitches were mastered. She then selected the children capable of the best needlework and taught them what she had learned. Their newly acquired skills brought money into their homes at a time when it was sorely needed to pay rent and buy food. No doubt quite a few evictions were avoided by those industrious children.
The Convent Lace School was opened in 1852 and in 1863 a shawl of Youghal Lace was presented to the Princess of Wales on the occasion of her marriage to the future King Edward VII. It was the first of many presentations to the Royal Family. Queen Victoria’s coronation veil was made of Youghal Lace, as was a train worn by Queen Mary on a visit to India in 1911.
Several medals were awarded to Youghal Lace in international exhibitions over the years including the Chicago World’s Fair 1893 and the Exhibition of British Lace in London 1906. After Mary Ann Smith’s death in 1872, the work in the lace room was carried on by Sister Mary Regis Lynch, who produced many new designs. The Lace School flourished until World War I, which effectively did away with many lace markets. However, Youghal Lace continued until the late 1950s.
In 1987 history repeated itself when another nun from Presentation Convent Youghal, Sister Mary Coleman, along with Veronica Stuart from Carrigaline, Co. Cork, unraveled a piece of Youghal Lace, as Mary Ann Smith had done. The stitch work was studied and techniques noted, with Veronica Stuart even traveling to the Continent to perfect her skills in needle-lace. In 1989 she began to teach Youghal Needlelace, ensuring its survival. It is still being made today, having its own range of 100 separate stitches and is known for a hallmark shell border, alluding to the town’s marine history.
