Morocco Travel Guide: Marrakech, Atlas Mountains and Essaouira
On this trip you’ll be heading to Marrakech, the heart of Morocco, where spices linger in the market air, the sun sets on street performers, and the senses are treated to a whirlwind of sights and sounds. Discover life in the sprawling medina or get lost in the alleyways towards the souqs. Marvel at the tilework found in the royal Bahia Palace and Dar Si Said or learn how ancient traditions are woven into the fabric of Marrakech; there’s more than one way to fall in love with this cosmopolitan city.
Morocco is a North African country renowned for diversity, and this is one of the things that make it such a fascinating destination to visit. It’s a place where one will find many cultural influences, and the landscape offers visitors a chance to experience the ocean, Atlas Mountain peaks and the Sahara Desert all in one go. You might be travelling to one country, but in Morocco, there is a whole world to explore.
In Essaouira discover how coastal winds and different tribes can shape a port city. It’s a melting pot with Arab, Berber and European influences. While the sea attracts windsurfers, culture vultures flock to the medina’s alleyways for galleries and a spot of people watching. The vibrancy found in the country’s cities is matched by life in the Middle Atlas Mountains, where visitors can swap people watching and fortified walls for hiking, folk music and stargazing.
Observe nomadic shepherds, hike through limestone river canyons, enjoy impressive views and Berber hospitality and warmth as you make Midelt your basecamp for the Middle Atlas Mountains. As the sun goes down on the soaring peaks, the stars will light up the skies.
If we’ve inspired you to explore this north African country further, head over to TourRadar for all the different ways you can discover a world of flavour, culture and history in Morocco.

I WENT TO MOROCCO!!
In Morocco, there are so many cool experiences that my friends and I could participate in! Being in Morocco for just over two months gave us a great feel for the country and the people. It was incredibly easy to make friends as the university students we met were up for anything and so friendly! It’s not shown in this video but we would often host game afternoons in the apartment we rented and we would have around 20 people show up to play cards, or they would take us to the market or go on adventures!

Marrakesh Medina, Morocco - walking its dirty streets
The Medina of Marrakesh is an old Islamic capital originating from the 11th century. It is enclosed by 16km of ramparts and gates.
The city owes its original splendour to the Almoravide and Almohade dynasties (11th - 13th centuries), who made Marrakech into their capital.
The Medina has several architectural and artistic masterpieces from different periods in history:
- the ramparts and gates (in pinkish clay, like most of the original structures)
- the Koutoubia mosque (its 77m high minaret is a key monument of Islamic architecture)
- the Saadian tombs
- Djemaa El-Fna square
- Ben Youssef Madrassa
Beyond the walls, Marrakech has ample areas of greenery at the Palmeira palm groves, and the Menara and Agdal gardens.
Outstanding Universal Value
Brief synthesis
Founded in 1070-1072 by the Almoravids (1056-1147), capital of the Almohads (1147-1269), Marrakesh was, for a long time, a major political, economic and cultural centre of the western Muslim world, reigning in North Africa and Andalusia. Vast monuments dating back to that period: Koutoubia Mosque, with the matchless minaret of 77 metres, an essential monument of Muslim architecture, is one of the important landmarks of the urban landscape and the symbol of the City, the Kasbah, ramparts, monumental gates and gardens. Later, the town welcomed other marvels, such as the Badiâ Palace, the Ben Youssef merdersa, les Saâdians tombs, Bahia Palace and large residences. Jamaâ El Fna Square, inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a true open-air theatre that always amazes visitors. Due to its still protected, original and well conserved conception, its construction materials and decoration in constant use, and its natural environment (notably the Gardens of Aguedal, Ménara and the Palm Grove (Palmeraie) the plantation of which is attributed to the Almoravids), the Medina of Marrakesh possesses all its initial components both cultural and natural that illustrate its Outstanding Universal Value.
Criterion (i): Marrakesh contains an impressive number of masterpieces of architecture and art (ramparts and monumental gates, Koutoubia Mosque, Saâdians tombs, ruins of the Badiâ Palace, Bahia Palace, Ménara water feature and pavilion) each one of which could justify, alone, a recognition of Outstanding Universal Value.
Criterion (ii): The capital of the Almoravids and the Almohads has played a decisive role in medieval urban development. Capital of the Merinids, Fès Jedid (the New town), integral part of the Medina of Fez, inscribed in 1981 on the World Heritage List, is an adaptation of the earlier urban model of Marrakesh.
Criterion (iv): Marrakesh, which gave its name to the Moroccan empire, is a completed example of a major Islamic capital of the western Mediterranean.
Criterion (v): In the 700 hectares of the Medina, the ancient habitat, rendered vulnerable due to demographic change, represents an outstanding example of a living historic town with its tangle of lanes, its houses, souks, fondouks, artisanal activities and traditional trades.
Integrity (2009)
The boundary of the property inscribed on the World Heritage List is correctly defined by the original ramparts that enclose all the requisite architectural and urban attributes for recognition of its Outstanding Universal Value. A revision of these boundaries is envisaged for increased protection of the surroundings of the property.
Nevertheless, the integrity of the property is vulnerable due to pressure from urban development, uncontrolled alterations to upper floors and construction materials of the houses, the abandonment of the Khettaras (underground drainage galleries) and exploitation of the palm groves.
Authenticity (2009)
The ramparts, the Koutoubia Mosque, the kasbah, the Saâdians tombs, the ruins of Badiâ Palace, Menara water feature and pavilion, are examples of many monuments that clearly reflect the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. The authenticity of the inner urban structure and of the monuments remains intact. It is ensured by qualified workmanship carrying out restorations in accordance with standards in force. Reconstruction and redevelopment work carried out in the heart of the historic centre generally respects the original volume and style. The use of traditional materials in these restoration operations has tremendously revived the artisanal trades linked to construction (Zellige, lime plaster (tadallakt), painted and sculpted wood, plastering, wrought ironwork, cabinetmaking, etc.) in addition to trades linked to furnishing and decoration.
BACKPACKER - ENG - From Fes El-Balì to Chefchaouen (Morocco)
BACKPACKER - English Version - From Fes El-Balì to Chefchaouen (Morocco) - NoPainNoGlory.TK by BackpackerR
Fes or Fez, the holy city of Morocco, 980 feet above sea level, the bottom of a fertile valley. It is the provincial capital. The old town, its buildings, its markets and its mosques, one of the most attractive of the whole Islamic world.
For the population of Morocco is the third largest city and the oldest imperial city and this is the prevalence of secular prestige and importance of its ancient university on culture and art of the Muslim North Africa.
You will find it written by all parties, and I do not deny it, enter the medina of Fes el Bali, seems really to make a trip to the Middle Ages.
Colors, sounds and smells, dominate the senses, the first time will be stunned, is a fascinating experience!
The medina is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Morocco food is spectacular! The spices are unique!
Costs 5 Dirhams, you can enjoy the snails, a gastronomic delight! The stand is located on the street, and between Talaa Seghira Derb el-Horr.
Try some of the myriad of street stalls, delicious sandwiches with meat cooked, the flavor of a thousand spices, joy and passion in the process! All this costs between 10 and 20 dirhams, 1 - 2 euro to be paid for a single meal.
I recommend a meal in a restaurant elite, which can cost 70-100 dirhams.
La Kasbah!
At the entrance of the Medina, at Bab Bou Jeloud, this restaurant gives you the opportunity to dine on a terrace where you can admire the medina. The menu, tagine, cous cous and grilled meat to satisfy your palate!
The only means of transport in the heart of the medina are donkeys, they feel constantly scream Ballaké which in Arabic means caution.
As you will notice that the gas arrives in the medina with the ass!
Arrived in Chefchaouen in the late afternoon, I went in the main square of the medina, Plaza Uta el-Hammam,
in a cafe where I enjoyed a mint tea, watching what was happening around me.
In this square you can admire the Grand Mosque and the walls of the Kasbah, a central fountain, very characteristic.
The medina is characterized by narrow streets, colored with white walls and blue doors, the white reflects the sun, and heat, blue for mosquitoes,
has kindly described as a local resident.
Different the medina of Fez, this is smaller and it is hard to lose orientation.
The medina of Chefchaouen was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One of the must-see attractions are the waterfalls of Chefchaouen in Ras-El-Maa, crossed the bridge you can admire the ruins of a mosque, now abandoned for a century.
For the more ambitious I highly recommend an excursion to the Jebel, for 4 - 5 hours, part near the Camping Azilane, following the road to Ain Tissimlane.
The trail is marked by a yellow stripe and white marked on the rocks.
I went for an hour, then for lack of time and forced back, I had to give up, so it's a company that will be taken!
If you want more information on excursions to be made in Chefchaouen area, contact the tourist office
which also makes use of a good expert guide for a half-day tour will cost 120 dirham.
To sleep advice Mouritania Hotel, a magnificent structure with a tiled courtyard, a bed is available at 5 euro per night, also has an excellent internet point.
Do not miss the cafe in Chefchaouen and Bab-Ansar Cafe, near the Falls of Ras-al-Maa, Aziz and Patisserie, a bakery for delicious breakfasts.
From what I have seen Chefchaouen is a city to relax and go hiking.
If you want to use a bath, you should go to the center form alive, in the Atlas Riad Chefchaouen, the hotel that stands at the top of Chefchaouen, treatments from 50 to 400 dirhams.
Do not miss the steam room, Barakat Douches, 8 Dirham, times, for men has opened in the morning, for women, in the afternoon.
To take the bus to Fes, I decided to walk the 6 miles separating from Dardari Chefchaouen, in the street I had the opportunity to see children returned from school that is offered as information guides, taxi riders, loggers, makers bricks, and so on and so forth!
The view is breathtaking, the food flavor is strident, the people are fantastic, life full of rhythm and joy ....
Morocco fantastic! See you soon!

WOWWW!! Mega Seafood and BBQ CAMEL in Morocco! INSANE Street Food and Seafood Market Tour!
Check out for 3 months free w/ 1 year pack and 49% OFF! ► TAI HAO LE MERCH:
Today we're going DEEP for a full-on SEAFOOD and BBQ Camel Adventure in Essaouira, Morocco! You can follow along as we find MEGA sized seafood like lobster and jumbo crab, and also go DEEP to the Had Dra Sunday farmers market outside of Essaouria to find some INSANE street food, like BBQ camel and a GIANT Moroccan Tajine!
► The BEST VPNs for China:
If you're thinking of coming to Morocco to eat street food, you're going to love it. In one day, you can travel from Marrakech to Essaouira, and try some of the best street food in the world.
We started out our MEGA seafood adventure and BBQ camel tour by first visiting the Sunday farmers market at Had Dra, a short bus ride outside of Essaouira. It was here that we found huge rows of different meats that you can bring to the corner of the market and BBQ up. Right away, I noticed a huge camel head hanging up and different cuts of camel. I knew it had to be done. So we purchased 1 kg of camel and brought it to the BBQ. It was honestly too tough and dry.
After this, we found another GIANT street food to try, the giant chicken tagine. It was so delicious and full of olive, potato, zuchinni, and Moroccan spice.
Next up, we went back to Essaouira in search of some of the best street food and seafood, and found some crazy stuff at the local seafood market. We found a GIANT LOBSTER, around 3.5 KG, and also had some raw seafood like sashimi. I found raw sea urchin, and also raw oyster! The sea urchin, sometimes called Uni, was quite strong! After that, we found a GIANT crab and GIANT LOBSTER at this seafood market. It was such a cool experience! The lobster was quite expensive actually, about $120, but so worth it!
Then we brought the lobster to a grill in the DEEP back streets of essaouira and feasted! It was honestly a little overcooked in some places but in other places it was perfect. I think that's because the lobster was so huge it was hard to cook evenly.
After this, we went to a local Lady's home to try some home cooked moroccan food, the world famous chicken cous cous. Here, it was juicy chicken over top of nutty cous cous with carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, and zuchinni. Moroccan street food is amazing, but the home cooked Moroccan cuisine is even better!
It was an incredible day in Essaouria, Morocco! We found a ton of amazing Moroccan street food and Moroccan home cooked cuisine!
The best part was definitely the JUMBO seafood like the giant lobster and crab, and I must say, the BBQ camel was not my favourite!
