Over fifty years, the collector couple Ernst and Hildy Beyeler assembled a collection of artworks of classical modernism, parallel to their work as gallery owners. The collection was converted into a foundation in 1982. It includes approximately 300 paintings and sculptures and gives a personal view of classical modernism.
The museum is located in an English park with a historical villa, old trees, and water lily ponds. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the museum is popular for its human-scale architecture and the presentation of the artworks in natural light. Under the direction of Sam Keller, the Fondation Beyeler became the most popular art museum in Switzerland and is considered one of the finest worldwide.
The second exhibition in the series (June - September 2017) will show the collection in its present state and includes the acquisitions of contemporary art. The third show presents possible ways in which the Fondation Beyeler's collection could be extended.

Beatriz Milhazes at Fondation Beyeler
| Solo exhibition with paintings, collages, a mobile, and a floor piece by the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel). Introduction by curator Michiko Kono. More info:
As a sort of preview to the upcoming exhibition in the museum, Fondation Beyeler in Riehen / Switzerland, presented a rather unusual floor work by the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes at Art Basel Miami Beach 2010. Now the museum is showcasing four new, monumental paintings by the artist, as well as a selection of collages, a mobile, and the aforementioned floor work.
In this segment, we have a look at the exhibition and meet up with the curator of the show, Michiko Kono, who talks about the artist, her work, the concept of the exhibition and the artworks on display.
Beatriz Milhazes has created the four new paintings expressly for the show at Fondation Beyeler. As she already pointed out in the interview VernissageTV did with the artist in Miami Beach, the paintings are devoted to the subject of the four seasons. It's the first time Beatriz Milhazes determined the subject of the works in advance of the painting process.
The exhibition project is curated by Michiko Kono, assistant curator at the Fondation Beyeler. The show runs until April 25, 2011. Press release and photo gallery are available after the jump.

Resonating Spaces: Antunes, Bächli, Khedoori, Philipsz, Whiteread / Fondation Beyeler
Resonating Spaces is the title of the exhibition at Fondation Beyeler that brings together artworks by the artists Leonor Antunes, Silvia Bächli, Toba Khedoori, Susan Philipsz and Rachel Whiteread. Instead of making a comprehensive group show with numerous works, the exhibition presents exemplary works by a few internationally renowned contemporary artists.
“The works of these artists create a specific quality of spatiality in very varied forms – acoustic, sculpted and drawn. Although different from one another, their works create spaces rather than being perceived as single objects only. They have in common that their visible appearance seems to be unobtrusive, understated, whereas the effect they have is strong and powerful. These works evoke spaces between the identifiable and the elusive. They create sites and respites, in which the capacity of remembering is elicited and images and memories come to life.” (press text, excerpt).

Paul Gauguin at Fondation Beyeler
The exhibition Paul Gauguin at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland) is one of the highlights of the art year 2015. The show brings together about fifty masterpieces by Paul Gauguin from leading international museums and private collections such as the Musée d’Orsay, Paris; the Museum Folkwang, Essen; the Tate in London; the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery in Prague; and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. The exhibition focuses on Gauguin’s world-famous paintings he created in Tahiti, complemented by diverse self-portraits and paintings from the time he spent in Brittany. In his Tahiti paintings, Paul Gauguin celebrates his ideal of an unspoilt exotic world, harmoniously combining nature and culture, mysticism and eroticism, dream and reality. In addition to paintings, the exhibition includes a selection of Gauguin’s enigmatic sculptures that evoke the art of the South Seas that had by then already largely vanished. The exhibition runs until June 28, 2015.

Giacometti at Fondation Beyeler
The summer exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel, Switzerland, is devoted to the Swiss sculptor, painter and draftsman Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). During his Paris years, Alberto Giacometti became one of the most influential protagonists of modern art. He is best known for his seemingly fragile figures in which the human form is reduced to the essentials.
On display are about 150 major works from every phase of Alberto Giacometti’s career. In addition, the exhibition includes works by other artistically active members of the Giacometti family: Giacometti’s father, Giovanni, his brother, Diego, and his uncle, Augusto. On view are sculptures, paintings, drawings, and design objects from the family holdings, private collections, and renowned museums around the world.
The exhibition begins in the foyer with a seldom-seen, complete presentation of all nine versions of Femmes de Venise, created by Alberto Giacometti for the Venice Biennale in 1956. Among the other important pieces on display are Boule suspendue (Suspended Ball, 1930/31), La main (The Hand, 1947), Le chariot (The Chariot, 1950), Le chien (The Dog, 1951), Grande tíªte de Diego (Large Head of Diego, 1954), and Homme qui marche II (Walking Man II). One room is dedicated solely to a single tiny sculpture, Petit homme sur socle (1940-41).
The exhibition was curated by Ulf Küster and organized in collaboration with the Alberto Giacometti Foundation, Zurich, and the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti, Paris. The exhibition runs until October 11, 2009.

Sam Keller on Jean-Michel Basquiat at Fondation Beyeler
| Interview with Sam Keller at Fondation Beyeler on the occasion of the comprehensive Jean-Michel Basquiat retrospective in Riehen / Basel.
More info:
On the occasion of his 50th birthday, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel / Switzerland, is devoting the first large exhibition ever held in Europe to the American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988).
In this conversation with Ute Thon (Art – Das Kunstmagazin), Sam Keller (Fondation Beyeler’s director and the co-curator of this exhibition with art historian Dieter Buchhart) talks about the genesis and importance of the exhibition, why it was so challenging to put the show together, the charateristics of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s oeuvre, and his favorite pieces in the exhibition.
The artist star died of a drug overdose at the age of 27. In the space of just eight years he had succeeded in creating an extensive oeuvre and introducing new figurative and expressive elements into contemporary art.
The Basquiat retrospective at the Fondation Beyeler traces Jean-Michel Basquiat’s unique artistic development and reflects his place in art history. The show also enables a rediscovery and re-evaluation of one of the most fascinating personalities in the history of recent art.
The Basquiat retrospective at Fondation Beyeler comprises over 100 works. It runs until September 5, 2010. The show is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue that was designed by Marie Lusa and contains essays by Dieter Buchhart, Glenn O’Brien, and Robert Storr, an interview with Basquiat by Becky Johnston and Tamra Davis, previously published only as a video film (1985), and short texts by Michiko Kono and a chronology by M. Franklin Sirmans.

Ernst Beyeler - A life devoted to art
Ernst Beyeler (1921 - 2010) was a Swiss arts dealer, gallery owner and museum founder. His feeling for good art and business made him one of the best known personalities in the international art business of the second half of the 20th century.
Edward Hopper / Fondation Beyeler
The Fondation Beyeler’s 2020 spring exhibition presents works by Edward Hopper (1882–1967), one of the 20th century’s most important American painters. Hopper was born in Nyack, New York. After training as an illustrator, he studied painting at the New York School of Art until 1906. Next to German, French and Russian literature, the young artist found key reference points in painters such as Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet.
The exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler has its focus on Hopper’s iconic representations of the infinite expanse of American landscapes and cityscapes. With watercolors and oil paintings dating from the 1910s to the 1960s, the exhibition provides an extensive overview of the multifaceted nature of Edward Hopper’s oeuvre.
Organized by the Fondation Beyeler in cooperation with the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the major repository of Hopper’s work.

Yingmei Duan: Passing By. Performance at Fondation Beyeler
In this performance, the artist Yingmei Duan and her partner Nikos Fragkou walk hand in hand in slow motion through the whole of the Foundation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland). Smiling, they move slowly in silence. From time to time they choose a member of the audience and approach him or her, keeping eye contact, and as they are Passing By (the title of the performance) they touch him/her very slowly and softly. They will also interact indirectly by passing by other visitors and artworks, in a similar way appreciating every moment.

Philippe Parreno: Water Lilies – Restoration Project at Fondation Beyeler
The conservation and restoration of artworks has always been a responsible and demanding task. With the expansion of the concept of art and the use of new materials and technologies, contemporary art presents restorers with new challenges. This film uses the restoration project Philippe Parreno: Water Lilies, 2012 of the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland) to show what these challenges are and how they can be overcome. (in German language with English subtitles).
The French artist Philippe Parreno created the artwork Water Lilies for his solo exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler in 2012. As Fondation Beyeler's Associate Curator Michiko Kono explains, Parreno's piece is inspired by one of the highlights of the Beyeler Collection, Claude Monet's triptych “Nymphéas”, one of the French impressionist painter's water lily paintings painted between 1916 and 1919. Parreno created a high-tech version of it, an art installation in the water lily pond of the Fondation Beyeler, whose subtle and refined effect for the viewer is based on elaborate and precise technology. The interplay of sound and movement, which creates water lilies from water and light in the pond of the Fondation Beyeler, is achieved through techniques, materials and equipment that would not initially be associated with visual art, such as a so-called Buttkicker. The creative misappropriation of things is not unusual in contemporary art and ultimately anything can be used to create art. This unlimited creativity is confronted by the restorer, who – simply put – no longer has to be familiar only with paint and canvas, but with an unprecedented variety of materials, techniques and equipment.
So how do you preserve and restore art whose components age, break, are incompatible or no longer available? Markus Gross, Fondation Beyeler's Chief Conservator, and Assistant Conservator Johanna Elebe talk about these challenges and some of the solutions in this film.
