Full Thailand trip report:
Mrs. Lin's Lunar New Year in Taiwan 2016
Recently Mrs. Lin has traveled to her birthplace, Taiwan, to celebrate Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 8 of this year. She has taken some very interesting video footage of her trip and here are some of the highlights.
Taichung is Taiwan’s third largest city and is located in the west central of Taiwan. I traveled from Taipei via Taiwan’s High Speed Rail to suburb of Taichung. Since the city is located in the busy and crowded area of Taichung so I then transfer via regular train to arrive at the Taichung Railway Station where the city is located. There are many tourist spots as well as good foods to enjoy in Taichung so I had to pick and choose what I wanted to do in one day.
I started out from Miyahara. This place used to be an eye clinic founded by Japanese optometrist Takekuma Miyahara during the Japanese Occupation in 1927. After World War Two, it became a health center but was abandoned later until 2011 when a well-known pastry industry purchased and renovated this place. This is an attractive two story building made up of red bricks on the exterior and the inside looks like “Hogwarts Castle” in the scene of harry potter’s movie where tall wooden book shelves and such was built. Although this building has been repaired but it still preserves many of the original components. So what is Miyahara famous for nowadays? They are famous for their Dawn Cakes, Pineapple Cakes, ice cream and bubble teas and if you have time, you can enjoy all those above mentioned great food in their cafe upstairs.
Another place I visited in Taichung was Feng Cha Night Market, which claims to be the largest night market in Taiwan. Here you will find gazillion’s food and drink stands, restaurants, clothing, cellphone charms….etc and the best time to visit is of course after dark when everything becomes live.
Kaohsiung is the second largest city after Taipei and is located in the southern part of Taiwan. I spent two days there and had visited Fo Guang Shan (Buddha’s Light Mountain) which is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. This place is huge and there are over 10,000 Buddha statues around the temple. You have to see it to believe it yourself.
Another place I visited in Kaohsiung is the former British Consulate at Takao (now known as Kaohsiung). It was built in 1865 and lies at the peak of Shaochuantou and overlooking Xiziwan Bay and Port of Kaohsiung. Because of Taiwan’s unique history, this place has become a classic historical site.
Taoyan’s Yingge district, located on the northern part of Taiwan and one hour south of Taipei, is famous for the production of ceramic and an abundance of art studios and shops can be found here. If you like ceramic and pottery, you definitely will want to visit the Yingge Pottery Street or Yingge Old Street in Mandarin Chinese which boasts to have the largest ceramic production in Taiwan.
Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of Lunar New Year and it also marks the last day for New Year celebration. Traditionally Taiwanese hung out highly decorated lanterns but nowadays it has become extravagant with festivals decorated with elaborate and giant hand-sculpted soft glow lanterns. This year’s, the year of the monkey, Lantern Festival was held in Taoyuan with the theme of “Golden Monkey Offering Peaches” and I was lucky enough to enjoy thousands of handcrafted lanterns at Taoyuan.
Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival also happens to coincide on the same day as the lantern festival each year. I was able to join the crowd and watch the release of sky lantern, which is normally written with well wishes hoping to bring those individuals good luck throughout the year. Pingxi is a small town nestled in northeastern of Taipei and is best reached by train (normally in one and a half hour) because of the scenery along the way is amazing. This town is known for its sky lanterns and you will find many stalls around Pingxi old street and train station sell paper lanterns, miniature lanterns, food and fireworks. At night, hundreds of sky lanterns can be seen simultaneously launched everywhere around town. It’s quite a sky show and it’s totally worth the visit.
Taiwan is the land of good and tasty food. You can find food pretty much everywhere you go and will never be hungry there. One of the best small eats or xiaochi in mandarin (similar to snacks or fast food) can be found in the night market or street stalls. There are hundreds of choices and you will never be bored.

Episode 113 - Chun Wan's Bureaucratic Temple System
June 17. Chun Wan is the head honcho of Chinese gods, so to speak. He has authority over various administrations (temples) that are in various locations in China. Every town has a Chun Wan temple, and I am looking at the various deities that serve under Chun Wan in the Jinmen temple.

HIKING TAIWAN: SANDSTONE RIDGES AND STINKY TOFU - HUANGDIDIAN AND SHENKENG, NEW TAIPEI CITY (深坑,皇帝殿)
Do go to Taiwan. Join Richard and Hugo as they enjoy stinky tofu for lunch in Taipei’s Shenkeng district before tackling one of northern Taiwan’s most stunning day hikes - the knife-edge sandstone ridges of Huangdidian - the Emperor’s Palace.

The Trail
There are numerous ways to do this trail. We did the simplest version where you complete a triangle-shaped loop that starts and ends at the temple trailhead car park. This only includes the central part of the ridge and takes around 3 hours.
To do the full ridge walk you can start from either the east trailhead at Nanku Road (湳窟路) off Shiding Old Street (石碇老街) or the west trailhead at Yongding Coal Mine (永定煤礦).
Starting from either end means a much longer trip (around 6 hours), but it also makes for a more authentic hike as you climb the ridge proper rather than via steps.
Travel Logistics
The Shiding area and Huangdidian are around a 30-minute drive from Taipei via the No.5 freeway.
If using public transport, you can get to the east trailhead on the 666 bus from Muzha MRT station. Get off at Shiding Old Street. From there it’s a short walk to the trailhead on Nanku Road.
For the west trailhead catch the 795 bus ( also from Muzha MRT station, toward Shifen (十分寮) and alight at Yongding Coal Mine.
You can also take the 666 ( to the Huangdidian car park trailhead, getting off at the very last stop (check with the driver first as there is more than one 666 service and not all go to Huangdidian).
The trailhead is then around a 30-minute steep uphill walk from the main road.
Be warned, some services are infrequent so you will have to plan your trip ahead to avoid getting stranded when you finish.
Drones
There are currently no known restrictions on the use of drones in the area around Huangdidian. A useful reference tool and map on drone restrictions in Taiwan can be found here (

Sun Yat-sen
Sun Yat-sen (/ˈsʊn ˈjɑːtˈsɛn/; 12 November 1866 – 12 March 1925) was a Chinese revolutionary, first president and founding father of the Republic of China, and medical practitioner. As the foremost pioneer of Republic of China, Sun is referred to as the Father of the Nation in the Republic of China (ROC), and the forerunner of democratic revolution in the People's Republic of China. Sun played an instrumental role in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty during the years leading up to the Double Ten Revolution. He was appointed to serve as Provisional President of the Republic of China, when it was founded in 1912. He later co-founded the Kuomintang (KMT), serving as its first leader. Sun was a uniting figure in post-Imperial China, and remains unique among 20th-century Chinese politicians for being widely revered amongst the people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Although Sun is considered one of the greatest leaders of modern China, his political life was one of constant struggle and frequent exile. After the success of the revolution, he quickly resigned, due to Beiyang Clique pressure, from his post as President of the newly founded Republic of China, and led successive revolutionary governments as a challenge to the warlords who controlled much of the nation. Sun did not live to see his party consolidate its power over the country during the Northern Expedition. His party, which formed a fragile alliance with the Communists, split into two factions after his death. Sun's chief legacy resides in his developing of the political philosophy known as the Three Principles of the People: nationalism, democracy, and the people's livelihood.

SUMMARY
=======
Chiang Kai-shek (; 31 October 1887 – 5 April 1975), also known as Generalissimo Chiang or Chiang Chungcheng and romanized as Chiang Chieh-shih or Jiang Jieshi, was a politician and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China between 1928 and 1975, first in mainland China until 1949 and then in exile in Taiwan. He was recognized by much of the world as the head of the legitimate government of China until the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Chiang was an influential member of the Kuomintang (KMT), the Chinese Nationalist Party, as well as a close ally of Sun Yat-sen's. Chiang became the Commandant of the Kuomintang's Whampoa Military Academy and took Sun's place as leader of the KMT following the Canton Coup in early 1926. Having neutralized the party's left wing, Chiang then led Sun's long-postponed Northern Expedition, conquering or reaching accommodations with China's many warlords. From 1928 to 1948, Chiang served as chairman of the National Government of the Republic of China (ROC). Chiang was socially conservative, promoting traditional Chinese culture in the New Life Movement. Unable to maintain Sun's good relations with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Chiang purged them in a massacre at Shanghai and repressed uprisings at Kwangtung (Canton region) and elsewhere.
At the onset of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which later became the Chinese theater of World War II, Manchurian warlord Zhang Xueliang kidnapped Chiang and obliged him to establish a Second United Front with the CCP. After the defeat of the Japanese, the American-sponsored Marshall Mission, an attempt to negotiate a coalition government, failed in 1946. The Chinese Civil War resumed, with the CCP led by Mao Zedong defeating the KMT and declaring the People's Republic of China in 1949. Chiang's government and army retreated to Taiwan, where Chiang imposed martial law and persecuted critics in a period known as the White Terror. After evacuating to Taiwan, Chiang's government continued to declare its intention to retake mainland China. Chiang ruled Taiwan securely as President of the Republic of China and General of the Kuomintang until his death in 1975, just one year before Mao's death.Like Mao, Chiang is regarded as a controversial figure. Supporters credit him with playing a major part in the Allied victory of World War II and unifying the nation and a national figure of the Chinese resistance against Japan as well as his staunch anti-Soviet and anti-communist stance. Detractors and critics denounce him as a dictator at the front of an authoritarian autocracy who suppressed and purged opponents and critics and arbitrarily incarcerated those he deemed as opposing to the Kuomintang among others.
Liu Yichun, Structure Matters
4/19/16
Liu Yichun, a principal of Atelier Deshaus, will offer a tectonic and symbolic perspective illustrated by some of his architecture firm’s projects, showing how structure can play an ontological role in shaping the intrinsic quality of architecture (primitivity and poetry of space, modernity of interior, etc) in line with the roles of other elements, such as site, light, and surface. Yichun (b. 1969; MArch, Tongji University, 1997) was a guest professor at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, and at Southeast University School of Architecture. He founded Atelier Deshaus in Shanghai in 2001 with Chen Yifeng and Zhuang Shen. Architecture awards won by Atelier Deshaus include Business Week/Architectural Record China Award (2006) and WA Chinese Architecture Award (2006 and 2010). The firm's work has been shown in major international exhibitions on contemporary Chinese architecture in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Paris, Düsseldorf, Bordeaux, Rotterdam, London, Cincinnati, Brussels, Barcelona, Venice, Prague, Hong Kong, Milan, Tokyo, and Vienna. In 2011, Atelier Deshaus was selected by Architectural Record to be one of ten firms in that year’s Design Vanguard.

穿越東吳-東吳大學百年校史紀錄片
Due to the complicated historical factors, Soochow University had several names, and it doesn’t use the transliteration from its Chinese name for English name. Besides, it splited into 2 independant universities in mainland China and Taiwan resulting from the Chinese Civil War.
When it was first founded in 1900 in Suzhou City, China, its Chinese name was Dongwu University while English one was Soochow University.
After 1951, the second year after Chinese Civil War, Soochow University was rebuilt in Taipei City, Taiwan, using its original Chinese and English name.
Same time, the old campus in Suzhou City formed a new university with Chinese name Suzhou University and remain the same English name as Soochow University.
To clearify the dissimilarities, in the English subtitle, “SCU#origin“ means (1); “SCU#Taiwan“ means (2); “SUDA“ means (3); “SCU“ means the general idea of the above three.
Furthurmore, in order to be more specific when translating the orginal meaning of the speakers in the video, there will also be “Dongwu“ or “Dongwu University“ meaning the general idea of both (1) and (2), and “Suzhou University“ meaning (3).
Attabu II
The film documents the rise and fall of the Wufeng Lin family in Wufeng, Taiwan over the turbulent years of Taiwan under the administrations of the Qing dynasty, Japan, and Taiwan.

SUMMARY
=======
Chinese folk religion (Chinese popular religion) or Han folk religion is the religious tradition of the Han Chinese, including veneration of forces of nature and ancestors, exorcism of harmful forces, and a belief in the rational order of nature which can be influenced by human beings and their rulers as well as spirits and gods. Worship is devoted to a multiplicity of gods and immortals (神 shén), who can be deities of phenomena, of human behaviour, or progenitors of lineages. Stories regarding some of these gods are collected into the body of Chinese mythology. By the 11th century (Song period), these practices had been blended with Buddhist ideas of karma (one's own doing) and rebirth, and Taoist teachings about hierarchies of gods, to form the popular religious system which has lasted in many ways until the present day.Chinese religions have a variety of sources, local forms, founder backgrounds, and ritual and philosophical traditions. Despite this diversity, there is a common core that can be summarised as four theological, cosmological, and moral concepts: Tian (天), Heaven, the transcendent source of moral meaning; qi (氣), the breath or energy that animates the universe; jingzu (敬祖), the veneration of ancestors; and bao ying (報應), moral reciprocity; together with two traditional concepts of fate and meaning: ming yun (命運), the personal destiny or burgeoning; and yuan fen (緣分), fateful coincidence, good and bad chances and potential relationships.Yin and yang (陰陽) is the polarity that describes the order of the universe, held in balance by the interaction of principles of growth (shen) and principles of waning (gui), with yang (act) usually preferred over yin (receptiveness) in common religion. Ling (靈), numen or sacred, is the medium of the two states and the inchoate order of creation. Both the present day government of China and the imperial dynasties of the Ming and Qing tolerated village popular religious cults if they bolstered social stability but suppressed or persecuted those that they feared would undermine it. After the fall of the empire in 1911, governments and elites opposed or attempted to eradicate folk religion in order to promote modern values, and many condemned feudal superstition. These conceptions of folk religion began to change in Taiwan in the late 20th century and in mainland China in the 21st. Many scholars now view folk religion in a positive light. In recent times Chinese folk religions are experiencing a revival in both mainland China and Taiwan. Some forms have received official understanding or recognition as a preservation of traditional Chinese culture, such as Mazuism and the Sanyi teaching in Fujian, Huangdi worship, and other forms of local worship, for example the Longwang, Pangu or Caishen worship.
