The Fontaine Saint-Michel is a monumental fountain located in Place Saint-Michel in the 5th arrondissement in Paris. It was constructed in 1858–1860 during the French Second Empire by the architect Gabriel Davioud. It has been listed since 1926 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
The fontaine Saint-Michel was part of the great project for the reconstruction of Paris overseen by Baron Haussmann during the French Second Empire. In 1855 Haussmann completed an enormous new boulevard, originally called boulevard de Sébastopol-rive-gauche, now called Boulevard Saint-Michel, which opened up the small place Pont-Saint-Michel into a much larger space. Haussmann asked the architect of the service of promenades and plantations of the prefecture, Gabriel Davioud, to design a fountain which would be appropriate in scale to the new square. As the architect of the prefecture, he was able to design not only the fountain but also the facades of the new buildings around it, giving coherence to the square, but he also had to deal with the demands of the prefet and city administration, which was paying for the project.
Davioud's original project was for a fountain dedicated to peace, located in the center of the square. The prefect authorities rejected this idea and asked him instead to build a fountain to hide the end wall of the building at the corner of boulevard Saint-Michel and Saint-André des Arts. This forced Davioud to adapt his plan to the proportions of that building.
Davioud was himself a trained neoclassical sculptor from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and the large scale (26 meters by 15 meters) and the elaborate iconography he created for the fountain required the work of nine different sculptors. It features:
Two winged dragons on either side of the fountain by Henri Alfred Jacquemart.
The figure of Saint Michael and the devil by Francisque-Joseph Duret
The rock under Saint Michael by Félix Saupin
Bas-reliefs and ornamental foliage by Marie-Noémi Cadiot
Four statues representing the cardinal virtues:
Statue of Prudence, holding a serpent and a mirror, by Jean-Auguste Barre
Statue of Power, with a lion skin and club, by Claude-Jean Guillaume
Statue of Justice, with a scale and sword, by Louis-Valentin Robert
Statue of Temperance, by Charles-Alphonse Guméry
Statues of Power and Moderation, holding the coat of arms of Paris, by Auguste-Hyacinthe Debay

Latin Quarter, Saint-Michel in Paris. The soul of the French capital.
The Left Bank has been able to preserve the soul of the French capital. Walk through the Latin Quarter’s crooked cobblestone streets and you’ll think you’re inside a black and white Robert Doisneau photo. A place frozen in time! Extending over much of the 5th arrondissement, today’s Latin Quarter remains the center of the city’s university life, full of book shops, literary cafés, art house cinemas. A historic center of learning, scholarship and artistic achievement in Paris, The Latin Quarter's mystique is well-merited. The heart of St. Michel is still the Place St. Michel 0:26-1:00 with its baroque fountain of St. Michel killing a demon. This was once the site of numerous protests and social uprisings. One of the main events of French resistance to the occupying Nazis took place in the square, and in the riots of 1968 during which students took charge of the square, declaring it an independent state! Another place sight not to miss is Shakspear &Co. Founded by Sylvia Beach in the 20's, this became a focal point for expatriate Americans such as Hemmingway and the Irishman James Joyce. It was actually Sylvia Beach who finally agreed to publish Joyce's much-rejected novel, Ulysses. The shop was later taken over by George Whitman who is an iconic figure in the American ex-pat community. He is now is his 90's and the shop is run by his daughter. Another highlight is the Notre Dame de Paris, also called Notre Dame Cathedral, 2:05. It is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages and is distinguished for its size, antiquity, and architectural beauty. Enjoy!

A Walk Around Place Saint-Michel, Paris
The Place Saint-Michel is a public square in the Latin Quarter, on the borderline between the fifth and sixth arrondissements of Paris, France. It lies on the left bank of the river Seine facing the Île de la Cité, to which it is linked by the Pont Saint-Michel.
The northern end of the Place Saint-Michel, the end closer to the river, is on the left-bank side of the Pont Saint-Michel, which crosses sixty-two metres of water to reach the island, Île de la Cité. At this point, the Place Saint-Michel is formed by the convergence of four streets: two quais along the Seine, the Quai Saint-Michel and the Quai des Grands-Augustins, and the Boulevard Saint-Michel and the Rue Danton, which arrive at angles.
As one proceeds southward along the Rue Danton, addresses on either side of the street are 'Place Saint-Michel' addresses. This continues until one approaches the Rue Saint-André des Arts, which enters from the right, when the addresses become 'Place Saint-André des Arts' addresses. Only south of this place, is the name, Rue Danton, applied. So, one may suppose that the southern end of the Place Saint-Michel is on the street that becomes Rue Danton, about sixty metres north of the intersection with the Rue Saint-André des Arts.
The Place Saint-Michel was enlarged, as part of Baron Haussmann's restructuring of Paris, to form a suitable bridgehead for the new, wider Pont Saint-Michel.
The square's location permits a view of some of the monuments of the Île de la Cité, including Sainte-Chapelle and the Palais de Justice.
The Place Saint-Michel is known as the site of the Fontaine Saint-Michel (St. Michael Fountain), constructed by Gabriel Davioud in 1855-60. Nine major sculptors participated. Originally, the fountain's central statue was supposed to depict Napoleon Bonaparte, but the original conception came under criticism from opponents of Napoleon III; it was finally decided that the statue would be an image of Saint Michael, the Archangel (Saint Michel in French), with two dragons that spout water into the fountain and figures of the four classical cardinal virtues.
Fontaine Saint-Michel
