From Wikipedia
The castle of San Giusto is a fortress - museum located on the hill of the same name in Trieste .
As a historic residence, it was restored in the 2000s and used as a civic museum by the Municipality of Trieste, to which the building has belonged since 1930 . On the Bastione Lalio was inaugurated on April 4, 2001 the Lapidario Tergestino consisting of inscriptions , sculptures , bas-reliefs and fragments of architecture from the Roman era .
It can only be visited in part: in particular, in addition to the lapidary, the Chapel , the Caprin Room, the large inner courtyard - the venue for summer events - and the stands, from which you can enjoy a wide view of the city below, are accessible.
The first historical data concerning the presence of a fortress on the hill date back only to the fifteenth century .
Frederick III of the Habsburgs , under whose rule the city was then, did not support the Triestines in the war against the Venetians, which was a clear sign for the citizens: if they had to defend themselves, they were masters of themselves, and they disliked the imperial authority. It was a step too bold that the emperor could not tolerate and punished the city in an exemplary way.
The fortress walls
The year 1469 remains in history as the year of the destruction of Trieste. After the Austrian assault on the city and after the massacres, the looting and the plague that followed, the inhabitants of Trieste also had to submit to the formal punishment, that of building a fortress for the winners at their own expense.
The castle was built on the Capitoline hill, on the ruins of the Venetian castle. It was a two-story building with an adjacent square tower . It was not a beautiful building, nothing artistic or interesting. It was just a solid military post.
In the early 16th century , when the city passed temporarily under Venetian rule, this first construction was extended with a high semi-circular wall. After the return of the Empire the work continued, but without hurry. First, between 1551 and 1561 , the bastion was added to the southeast, called Lalio from the name of its first designer. The northern part, already planned by the Venetians, was completed in 1595 , and the last bastion, the Pomis bastion, dates back to 1630 .
As can be seen from the projects that still survive in Ljubljana , in the 17th century the fortress was rebuilt globally which seemed too small and inadequate for the defense of the city. An extension of the building was planned to include the entire summit of the hill, which would have even led to the demolition of the cathedral.
The bases of a fourth bastion of the fortress were found, buried beyond the basilica, but it was never erected. After the French bombing of the city in 1702 , it became clear that a huge fortress on the San Giusto hill no longer made sense.
Only in 1930 did the Italian authorities identify the tourist opportunity of the site. The fortress was restored, became a castle, and acquired its present appearance.
Throughout its history this fortress, built explicitly for war purposes, was used by the military only twice. The first time, in 1813 , by Napoleon's troops who for two weeks tried to resist the siege of the Austrian, English and Neapolitan fleets . The second time the fortress served the German soldiers who in 1945 surrendered to the liberation troops.
Enter the fortress passing a drawbridge of small proportions that was not the original medieval entrance, still clearly visible on the left. The castle is full of historical inscriptions and commemorative tombstones and at the entrance one can see among the military banners , the coats of arms of the patrician families of the city.
On the left there is a corridor leading to the ancient shooting positions, while the right corridor leads to the weapons museum and to the gatehouse.
A staircase leads to the panoramic terrace, from where one passes in the enormous courtyard, designed for piazza d'armi, and today the site of many cultural and entertainment events . From the margins of the courtyard you can climb the stands from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of those parts of the city that you couldn't see from the terrace.
Under the castle there are many tunnels and various environments that are not open to the public, as some are still being explored. One of the cellars, which can also be reached from the outside, has been home to the elegant high-class municipal restaurant for decades.

One day in Trieste, Italy (what to visit)
One day in Trieste, Italy (what to visit)
The Province of Trieste is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land in southeast Friuli Venezia Giulia, between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia. This is an extraordinary destination for its historic treasures, artworks and its middle-European character. Off Trieste's coast is its broad Gulf, with numerous tiny bays, small harbors and breathtaking reefs; and of course Miramare Castle is accompanied by the splendid blue of the sea.The area of Trieste is characterized by the steep karstic landscape continually revealing different, amazing and charming features. Close to the coast is a rocky moor with Mediterranean vegetation, where the Bora wind blows, while inland are hills with hollows and scrubs. Protected areas include the Val Rosandra Nature Reserve; the Marine Reserve of Miramare, within a coastal sea landscape of sharp rocks and a wide variety of underwater flora and fauna; and the Falesie di Duino Nature Reserve, with white cliffs overhanging the sea. The charm of the area resides not only in its natural traits, but also in the elegant city of Trieste, where the Habsburg influence is noticeable; the inland small towns with their longstanding traditions; and other quaint touristic draws on the coast - countless gems set within this tiny strip of land.

Eric Clark Travel Videos - Trieste Italy - The Fountain of the Tritons / La Fontana dei Tritoni
From Wikipedia
The Fountain of the Tritons (Italian: Fontana dei Tritoni) is a fountain in Rome (Italy), Piazza Bocca della Verità, in front of the basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. This fountain should be distinguished from the similarly named nearby Triton Fountain (Fontana del Tritone) by Bernini, in the Piazza Barberini, with only a single Triton.
The Fountain of the Tritons
The fountain and the Temples of Hercules Victor and Portunus in the background
The building, starting from 1610, of the last Roman aqueduct, the Acqua Paola, didn't move to the background the two aqueducts built just a few years before (the Aqua Virgo in 1570 and the Acqua Felice in 1587), which gave the possibility to erect new fountains on the branches that guaranteed a more widespread distribution of water in the whole town. A secondary branch of the Acqua Felice reached the area south of the Tiber Island: here, between ancient and middle-age monuments (the Arcus Argentariorum, the Arch of Janus, the Temple of Hercules Victor, the Temple of Portunus and the basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin) Pope Clement XI ordered the construction of a monument in his own memory. It is not so clear indeed why the pontiff chose to erect a fountain in an area that was scarcely inhabited, broken-grounded and subject to the floods of river Tiber. In fact, its fulfillment raised many criticisms for the location believed to be unhappy.
The fountain was completed in 1715 by architect Carlo Francesco Bizzaccheri, during the works for the accommodation of the square in front of the basilica. The whole travertine structure is placed on a circular step (delimited by 16 little columns joined by a grating), within which the design of the main basin represents an octagon with concave sides, or rather the eight-tips star that was the heraldic symbol of the family of the Pope, the Albanis). In the centre there is a group of rocks (an element that had become popular after the success of the fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) with bushes on which two Tritons (due to Francesco Moratti) are knelt with clinged tails and raised arms, sustaining on their shoulders a big oyster shell serving as upper basin. Between the two Tritons there is the coat of arms of the pontiff.
Four mascarons formerly dumped water into the main basin; they were removed in the 19th century, probably due to the scarcity of the incoming water, that could have left them dry. In fact the fountain has been without water for a long time, but the hydric provision, though quite scarce, has been restored. The last restorations date back to 1994-1995 and 2010.

Eric Clarks Travel Videos - Trieste Italy - The Huge Main Square / Piazza Unità d'Italia
From Wikipedia
Piazza Unità d'Italia (English: Unity of Italy Square) is the main square in Trieste, a seaport city in northeast Italy. Located at the foot of the hill with the castle of San Giusto, the square faces the Adriatic Sea. It is often said to be Europe's largest square located next to the sea. The square was built during the period when Trieste was the most important seaport of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and includes the city's municipal buildings and other important palaces.
Before 1919 it was known as Piazza Grande, or Great Square. The local Slovenes still refer to it as Veliki trg (Great Square), both in daily speech and in the media.[1] In the last decade, the term Trg zedinjenja (Unity Square) or Trg zedinjenja Italije (Unity of Italy Square) has also become popular, especially in official documents.[2][3]
The square itself has occasionally been used as a concert venue, with Green Day using the square as a venue for a show on their 99 Revolutions Tour in 2013. The attendance was of 12,000 people [4]. In 2016, it was used by heavy metal band Iron Maiden as a concert venue (it was the third of three Italian dates): the concert was sold out with over 15,000 fans.[5]
The square is also occasionally used for visits of foreign heads of state and meetings. In November 2013 President of Russia Vladimir Putin met Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta there for bilateral talks.[6] In July 2017 a trilateral meeting attended by Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, and Paolo Gentiloni was held there, as well as the fourth Western Balkans Summit.

info:
Benvenuti a TRIESTE ♥ Welcome to ITALY ♥ Visit FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA ♥
Its climate, with the dry Bora wind that blows over the karst plateau and towards the gulf; its history, shaped by Habsburg domination; and its geographic position, almost part of the Balkans; render the fascinating city of Trieste one of the most particular art cities in Italy, and of a notably mitteleurope character. Located in Italy’s extreme northeast (in Friuli Venezia Giulia), Trieste sat on what was a contested border for centuries; diverse populations intersected, and made their marks in the elegant and historic masterpieces, from the artistic to the architectonic, throughout the city.

Eric Clark's Travel Videos - Trieste Italy - Temple of Monte Grisa. Nazionale a Maria Madre e Regina
From Wikipedia
The Temple of Monte Grisa (Italian: Santuario Nazionale a Maria Madre e Regina) is a Roman-Catholic church north of the city of Trieste.[1] Located at an altitude of 300 metres on the edge of the Karst Plateau it is a most conspicuous landmark, seen by many, visited by few.
It was built at the initiative of Antonio Santin, since 16 May 1938 Bishop of Trieste and Koper.[2] Seeing the riots between the Nazi-German occupiers and the Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale on 30 April 1945 he made a vow to erect a church, if Trieste was saved from total destruction. The city was saved and in 1959 Santin obtained permission from Pope John XXIII to build a pilgrims church dedicated to the Holy Mary as a symbol of the peace and unity of all people.
The temple was designed by Professor Antonio Guacci, after sketches by Santin. The triangular structures should evoke the letter M as a symbol of the Holy Mary. The church was built in between 1963 and 1965, after a first stone had been laid on 19 September 1959. Santin inaugurated the church on 22 May 1966. On 1 May 1992 Pope John Paul II visited the temple. In 2010 restoration works took place, because the concrete had suffered from alkali-silica reaction.

The remains of the ancient Tergeste
The ancient Tergeste was founded around the middle of the first century BC in an area between the hill of San Giusto and the sea. The theater, still visible in the city center , dates back to a few decades later. Its tiers, placed on the slope of the hill to take advantage of the natural slope, could accommodate 3,500 spectators.
Today the theater is the most remarkable archaeological remains of Trieste, but there is no lack of other testimonies of the Roman past of the city. Behind the theater, in Via di Donota, an Antiquarium includes an excavation area and an exhibition space set in the tower of the medieval walls. The remains of the late Republican walls are instead visible in a second Antiquarium in via del Seminario. Whoever visits Trieste, undoubtedly comes across the so-called Riccardo's arch , in the heart of the Roman city center and also in the current city center. Not far away, finally, are the remains of an early Christian basilica .
