Fonts Point, Anza-Borrego California
One of the star attractions in the Park, Fonts Point is an overlook into the Borrego Badlands. The corrugated ridgelines of this heavily eroded landscape create a breathtaking sight as you look down upon them from Fonts Point. Read more at:
Font's Point — Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, CA
Font's Point is an iconic location in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park providing some of the best views of the park's striking topography. This trail is more about the destination than the ride. The short, easy drive up to Font's Point follows a wide, sandy wash to a small parking area. Walk a short distance up from the parking area and the ground suddenly disappears beneath you, revealing that you're standing on the edge of a cliff face overlooking the Borrego Badlands and thousands of acres of desert. The breathtaking vista is a must see if you're in the area. Font's Point is one of the most popular attractions in Anza-Borrego and usually has a handful of visitors. Sunset is a great time to visit as the view is especially striking, and around dusk you'll often see a few caravans of vehicles heading to the Point. Professional photographers can often be found on Font's Point seeking to capture stunning desert shots.

Font's Point - Anza Borrego State Park - Borrego Springs CA
These sediments were deposited at the mouth of an ancient relative of the Colorado river. Then from the northern region of an ancient Gulf of Baja California this pile of sediments was faulted northward along the San Andreas fault. Note the cause of this motion northward is due to fact that the San Andreas is a transform fault (sideways plate motion) versus a subduction zone fault (up-down plate motions). All of southern California west of the San Andreas fault may eventually end up smashing into Alaska, but not today.
These sediments are some of what was carved out by the Colorado river when it made the Grand Canyon. Fish Creek wash in Anza Borrego State Park in southern California is a great place to go see these sedimentary rocks originally from Utah and Arizona. Along this partly drivable wash, there are camel fossils, gypsum crystals, sandstone concretions and the amazing Wind caves area with its sculpted rock features and spectacular view of elephant butte. Anza Borrego is the largest state park in California and has more land than all other CA state parks combined. Late fall through early spring are the best times of year to visit because it gets brain frying hot out there in the summer time.

Milky Way Over Borrego Springs From Font's Point in the Anza-Borrego Desert
Kevin Key / Slworking - September 29, 2018
Timelapse of a late-season Milky Way moving across the sky over badlands (visible towards the end when the moon rises and lights up the ground) and the town of Borrego Springs, California.
I shot this from atop Font's Point in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. I pointed the camera southwest and shot a total of 687 frames - each at 13 sec f/2.8 ISO 3200 15mm with a Canon 6D and Sigma 15mm EX DG lens. I did NOT use my camera cooling system this time as my 15mm lens is a bit too wide to fit the opening in the cooler (I need to do some modifications) and also the air temperature wasn't too hot. Some noise/grain is visible, but it's not too bad. In what seems to be a rare event in the desert at night - especially on a ridge like up here - the wind was fairly mild most of the time. The humidity was low (not too rare in the desert) and there as almost no haze in the air. Great conditions for shooting the Milky Way.
In this video you can see the lights of downtown Borrego Springs, traffic on Highway 78, the Montezuma Grade, Yaqui Pass, and more. You can also see the rotating beacon at the Borrego Springs Airport. Towards the end of the video, the moon rises (out of frame) and nicely illuminates the badlands and turns the sky blue. Background music is a snippet of Cosmo Pulse by Maxim Kornyshev.
Font's Point is a scenic viewpoint in the Borrego Badlands area of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in San Diego County. I've heard some people call it San Diego's Grand Canyon.
The area is named after Father Pedro Font, a Franciscan Friar who accompanied Spanish Conquistador Juan Bautista de Anza on his explorations through the valley. Anza opened up the desert route that the Spanish used as an overland supply route between Mexico and settlements as far north as San Francisco.

Exploring Anza-Borrego Desert State Park: Font's Point, Sculptures, & Mud Caves
I met up with my friend Chris from LastAdventurer.com and went and explored Anza-Borrego over a 24 hour period of time. Some of the spots we visited were Borrego Palm Canyon, Font's Point, Galleta Meadows Sculptures, Peg Leg Smith Monument, Arroyo Tapiado Mud Caves, Hollywood and Vine Sign. Note that many of these spots do require a 4x4 car to get to.

Font's Point - Stabilized Sky Timelapse
(For licensing or usage, contact licensing@viralhog.com)
Here's a clip from a short timelapse film I have in the works. The purpose of the film will be to highlight that it's the Earth that rotates, not the sky. We all *know* that's the case, but we don't really perceive it that way. I was able to use a Vixen Polarie star tracker to stabilize the sky and illustrate the Earth's rotation.
This footage was captured at Font's Point in the Anza-Borrego Desert back in August 2016.

[Butterfield Trail] Anza-Borrego: Font's Point, Culp Valley, & Vallecito Springs (Days 1 & 2) [4K]
The route is prolific in interest to the naturalist, the mineralogist, and all who love to contemplate nature in her wildest varieties, and throughout the whole 2,700 miles the interest is not allowed to flag. I have found the deserts teeming with curious plants and animal life, the mountain passes prolific in the grandest scenery, and the fruitful valleys suggestive on an earthly paradise; - Waterman L. Ormsby, The Butterfield Overland Mail printed in the New York Herald, Thursday, 11 November 1858.
The Butterfield Overland Mail Stagecoach Route was the first interstate system in the United States of America, and pivotal in our development as a coast-to-coast thriving economic powerhouse... it was the predecessor to the Pony Express, railways, and the interstate systems we all use today.
In April and May of 2018, I traversed a large section of the trail from Southern California to Texas. This is my account of the adventure... enjoy!
Day 1 kicked off by getting on the road, and joining my cousin and friend at Alps Village in Palm Desert. From there it was down the highway, passing the Salton Sea, and leaving the Coachella Valley behind.
I traveled to Font’s Point, one of the most iconic areas in Anza Borrego to watch a joint sunset and moonrise.
Camped at Culp Valley camping area, the highest elevation campground in the park, and enjoyed the Dark Sky night sky.
Finally linked up with the trail and pushed farther down the road to the location of the Vallecito Stage Station, my first stop at an actual station from the original trail!
